How To Turn Your Loop Into A Song #3 - Production and Arrangement

Today I show how you can take a simple idea with some potential into a bigger concept and eventually a song by trying a few simple production techniques, arrangement ideas and creativity hacks. This video is aimed at beginners who are not familiar with arrangement and song structure. I start with a simple chord loop and try to arrange it into a structure and add some variety to the song.
The video covers 3 topics:
1) Finding a theme for your song
2) Filling out the song with rhythm and tone
3) How to arrange your music into a structure that makes sense
Time Stamps -
0:30 - The original loop
1:00 - Improvising to form new ideas
3:30 - New chord ideas and humanizing the loop
4:00 - Song structure
4:50 - Adding rhythm and tone
6:30 - Adding a synth to keep the tempo
8:00 - Adding a bass to match the song
9:10 - Drums
10:00 - More synths!
11:00 - Strings
12:45 - re arranging the song (using multiple playlists)
14:30 - Transitions
16:00 - Recording some guitar
You can see from the video that I am not getting into the mixing and mastering as I create a song. This is after a few years of taking the mixing far too seriously in the early stages. Some prefer to mix everything as they go but I have found that it kills the creative energy for me! I try to match sounds well so that I don't need huge amounts of EQ and Compression right away. There are no rights and wrongs when making music.
Common Structures for a song include:
Intro (4 Bars)
Verse (8 -16 Bars) + Prechorus (Optional)
Chorus(8 - 16 Bars)
2nd Verse (8 - 16 Bars) + Prechorus (Optional)
Chorus (8-16 Bars)
Sometime pre choruses are used depending on the genre, in my case I don't really have a pre chorus but in many genres it's essential to create build up and energy for the Chorus/Drop.
Hopefully it helps you out. Should I make more advanced videos about arrangement and structure?
Let me know in the comments below :)

You're so right! I recently discovered that you should choose samples and sounds before mixing so they fit perfectly or you think they sound good together and it makes sense.

Hi, I'm trying to learn how to make beats. To be specific I wanna learn how to make good, ear pleasing pop beats that I can sing to, and make songs to. Could you recommend any like loop, sample, or sound packs I should buy, or will the programme its self be enough, and I just need to learn how to arrange, and edit the sounds already on the programme?

The best advice I took from this set of tutorials that I recently also picked up on on my own while I was trying to recreate some of my favorite electronic tracks - I got so stuck on trying to match the key and the notes getting the articulation right I didn't bother to much with trying to get the same "sound" out of each instrument. I started messing with the stereo width, velocity & panning as well as matching sure my timestamps were in cue with the DSP round trip from my sound card. I finally feel like I have a hold on the DAW i've been messing with for the past 10 years lol. I appreciate you putting all of this together in a short informative to the point series brother, take care.

Even as somebody who has been using FL casually since 2010-2011 (I started with a pirated copy of FL 7 when I was 15), I still picked up a few things in this 3 part series to help my workflow become a bit more efficient. From the most basic beginners to the trained professionals, and even the intermediates in-between; It's crazy how you can speak to all of them in the same video and have something for EVERYONE to learn. "Play along on an instrument", I don't have a MIDI keyboard and I don't play instruments, but I always find myself jamming out on my actual computer keyboard when I'm messing with a synth in FL Studio. I'm still struggling to break out of the loop hell, but I think this step of physically playing something is very important. Even if you hit the wrong notes (and you absolutely will if you're stuck using a computer keyboard), you can nail down the exact rhythm and beat you're trying to translate into MIDI. And, as you demonstrated, sometimes it can help you come up with new ideas on the spot. For example, some synths can be frequency modulated just by sustaining one note and playing others on top of it. This is behavior you would discover very quickly by experimenting with something physical, whereas it would most likely be discovered by pure accident if you were just stuck using the Piano Roll. It's also far easier to try those ideas when it's as simple as just pressing keys in a certain order than trying to fumble around in the Piano Roll. Some of the most interesting stuff I've come up with has been from just randomly tapping keys until I get it into a specific rhythm. I should probably record them as patterns so I can fix them up properly and actually use them.

I had started learning and making music from March 2019 and today in July I can be called as a real music producer. That's the another thing that I am learning but you have done a magic on me. I love this video, it was great! As a composer and songwriter myself, I always love to watch these kinds of videos, as it really showcases how the two forms of expression are pretty much the same. Music production isn't much different from writing even something like a fairly simple string arrangement for a song.

@inthemix
@inthemix 5 жыл бұрын
Just to add to it, a bridge can also be between the final chorus and outro chorus to "Bridge" the two together and can really be any length. Usually in a bridge I like to change the atmosphere, add plenty reverb and maybe vocode the vocals or add vocal chants. Just something to make it more epic when that final chorus hits in :)
