Wow! Thanks for this review Tom. That looks very interesting. I love this idea because I don’t have a stick burner. My Rec Tec seems to put out plenty of smoke but I like the option of letting my built in pid do the work! 🍻

Thanks for Watching GT! The built in PID on the Pellet Pro does the same and it compensates pretty nicely for the additional heat from the wood burning. Rec Tec's are wonderful! I had a Mini for 2.5 years before it finally died on me, wasn't worth fixing since it was out of warranty.

Great video, Tom. Made me think I could just add a couple chunks of wood right on top of the heat deflector and they should smolder. Sure enough the chunks added that distinct smoke flavor that pellets can’t. Can’t believe I didn’t think of this before. Thank you, Sir!

I don't get it.Why would you want to change a pellet grill into a stick burner? If you want more smoke there are various tubes out there for $20 that will add as much smoke as you want.
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ 4 жыл бұрын
Daniel Konieczka Thanks for Watching Daniel! It serves multiple purposes, obviously to add more Smoke, but because of the thick gauge steel used it is a great replacement for any other heat deflector that has warped because of thin gauge construction. Also I have put in the slots aluminum water trays with water to add additional moisture to the cook.

The best way to use this is to go no higher than 200 on your pellet grill. Otherwise you will have high temp swings. Once the wood is burned out (3-4 hours) then you can bump up the temp of your grill.

@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ I would really love to believe that it produces more smoke flavor but I think this is more of a gadget, unfortunately, I've tried everything that's ever been suggested to get more smoke flavor from my pellet grill and nothing beats the smoke flavor from my drum smoker and offset smoker, hands down. I think pellet grills are for most people who don't want to bother learning how to use a real smoker as it can be very challenging to say the least, I know from experience.

Good morning, Tom. I got one of these when I got my 2300, but I haven't used it yet. Quick question - I know that when you buy wood chunks, often times the chunks will be various sizes. Some the size of your fist. Some are much smaller. So far, have you found any issues with the smaller pieces using the Heavy D? I'm sure they burn up quicker - but has your experience so far led you to only use chunks of a certain size (and thereby wasting some of the pieces in the bag) - or have you been able to use pretty much anything that is in those wood chunk bags? Asking because sometimes I know that the consistency of the chunks in some of those bags can be pretty hit and miss. It's not a big deal when you're just throwing them on an offset or wsm. But if you DO need the larger chunks for this, I can see a lot of waste in some of the bags that I've bought over the years. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ

Thanks for Watching Brad! I prefer to use splits in mine not wood chunks, the wood chunks have a tendency to start on fire which is not good. Splits will burn slowly with good smoke. Also need to be careful about opening the lid too much because the fan coming on will just fan the flames on the wood. It does work excellent though with the individual splits especially on low smoke. Thanks again for Watching!
@BradMorrell
@BradMorrell 4 жыл бұрын
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ where do you get your splits? Do you have a local source, or do you make them yourself from larger "logs"? I know that academy sports sells maple, apple, and cherry b&b brand logs. Not sure how large they are. Thinking that if needed, I could make splits out of those. Is that similar to what you do?

I know this is old, but I thought I'd answer. It does work with it, but the Bull has a rear-oriented feeder, so you have to install it sideways, and the notches don't have any purpose. The temps WILL be high unless you either 1) Prop the lid open a bit and/or 2) cook in cold weather. I mean you can drop the temp down to Lo, and it will still pull 250 easily.
