This happened to me in college before a full afternoon class. A chunk of lunch meat got lodged in my throat. I couldn't talk, cough, or breathe, it was absolutely terrifying. I turned to two of my classmates and they looked and laughed thinking I was joking. I literally jumped up and ran to the back of the room and grabbed the one guy who I knew would take me seriously, I did the choking sign and grabbed his hands and put them around my midsection as I turned around and bent over. He immediately gave two upward thrusts and the lunch meat came flying out. It was the most relieved and scariest event to happen to me out of nowhere. Eric Roth, if you happen to be reading this bro, thanks for saving my life!

Dude I had almost the exact same thing happen to me!! Started choking and I guided a guy on the campground through the heimlich. Only difference was my guy didn’t really know how to do it so he originally was just pushing on my stomach like a bear hug. But after I demonstrated the upward thrusts inti my diaphragm he caught on and got it free. So glad that he was willing to help!!

I was in a classroom surrounded by kids and they all backed away thinking I was going to throw up. The woman in charge of watching us during lunch was scolding me for drinking milk trying to stop myself from choking. Luckily, it was not a total obstruction and coughing eventually broke the food free. I was surrounded by idiots. Thank God I wasn't truly choking.

Yup, happened to me twice. Each time people just looked at me like I was throwing a fit and even left the lunch room. The last time everyone left the room and I passed out. Don't know how but I woke up in a pile of puke and the room was still empty. Luckily I was the shuttle driver so I got to just leave everyone at work to fend for themselves.

This video saved my life! I watched this a few months ago, because I have a tendency to choke on foods no matter how much I chew. It typically isn't full choking, though, more of like a hiccuping half-choke where is can breathe but only very slowly. Today, though, I started fully choking, was stood over the sink and in a complete panic, when I remembered this video. I grabbed a dining room chair, trying my hardest not to freak out because it would only make it worse, and I calmly fell on it. It took a couple tries, and hurt quite badly, but it stopped my choking dead in its tracks, and I was completely fine a few minutes later. I live alone in my apartment, and god am I glad I watched this video. Thank you.

When I was around 6 or 7 y/o, I started choking on a piece of ice, and started to panic. The panicking and lack of oxygen caused me to either lose my sight or made me feel like I had lost my sight, so I had to feel against the wall to find the door to get out and ask mom for help. Due to the panicking, I had also forgotten the step that was at the doorway and tripped over it and fell conveniently exactly where i needed to to get the ice launched right out. Then I could see again and my mom and her friends were just looking at me like "what the hell did we just miss?" XD

@@Nik-ei9st thanks, that's easier to remember (just below the armpits), or it seems like, the bottom part of the chest, across the sternum my initial thought was it would be around the stomach, but doing a quick test (light pounding on stomach and up towards chest), it does appear that hitting around the areas we talk about, seems correct. Stomach is no, just plump and doesn't seem to expel air. i think as other commenters mention, first try to get somewhere public if you are nearby, so others can be aware you're choking, so they can help or call for help if they can't. Then if needed, try to self heimelich by falling with force on some rounded blunt/firm object across sternum/ lower chest / lower armpit

This happened to me when I was 15 and home alone eating steak. I inhaled a giant bite and accepted that I was going to die. Then I thought about ways I could himelech myself. I tried punching my stomach and that didn't work so I put my fist on my stomach and leaned into the edge of the table as hard as I could. It came out the first try. Thank God I am innovative because nobody ever taught me self himelech. Teach this to your kids. It could save their lives.

Remaining calm is good, but medical responders in an emergency do need to constantly watch your status, how responsive you are to questions, how alert you are, you may not notice it yourself but they're trained to recognise when someone's condition starts to worsen. And someone who was talking and suddenly goes quiet is actually more alarming than someone who is unconscious but stable. So yes, remain calm, but don't close your eyes and try and do too deep of a relax because that's counterproductive in that particular situation.

I don't yet know how to train my cellphone to give an audible "HEEELLLLLP", but I'll get there. In the meantime, make sure your place is easy to locate. Have and know how to use a good comprehensive first aid kit. And if you've a trustworthy neighbor, let them know that if you need help, thats where you're headed. Basics, but walking yourself honestly through each foreseen possible emergency REALLY REALLY HELPS IMPROVE YOUR RESPONSE. You will be calmer, know where your supplies are and what you need, how to prioritize, and who to call. PS: don't forget maybe a neighborhood meeting discussing whistles, airhorns, honking, and the proper use of SOS. Everyone should be able to tell the difference between SHORT SHORT SHORT LONG LONG LONG SHORT SHORT SHORT and a car alarm, for example. Handy for natural disasters, too.

Tractor trailer drivers are beasts. And that's a word I have never used in this way besides for you folks. My grandparents were truckers for 25+ years (they did cross-country together, one driving days and the other nights) and it's a freaking intense job in so many ways. And the thought processes during emergencies are one of them. I'm amazed that you had the mind to do that. Amazing. Thank you so much for what you do. Without people like you we wouldn't get far.

@@hannesjakobsson765 You need to hit below the ribs. Watch a vide o about the Heimlich manaeuver to get an idea. It works by rapidly increasing the pressure on the diaphragm and thus, your lungs, which then work like a pair of bellows and blow what ever is stuck out. Which does not work when you hit the rib cage, which is designed, amongst other things, to prevent exactly that.

Yep. I did this exact thing once when severely choking on steak, sitting and eating alone at a patio restaurant. I signalled with my hands to my throat, to a table in front of me, that I was choking…and the guy looked me in the eyes and then ignored me and looked away. I couldn’t believe it. The scariest part was that the food was lodged waaaay down in my windpipe (almost solar plexus level) and my chest literally stopped heaving. I was terrified but also knew I needed to try and stay calm. Simultaneously, I was preparing to die. Seriously. I can’t explain it any better than saying that my body somehow knew it was time and I could feel myself preparing for death-almost resigned to it and hyper aware it was time. And trust me, I’m not being dramatic-I’m not one given to hyperbole. Also, I had initially swallowed some water, trying to wash down the food, and I could feel the water just sitting there, on top of the blockage, swishing around. An incredibly strange sensation, as I was hyper-tuned to my internal body workings. Feeling my lungs stop moving,my diaphragm stiffen and torso start to shut down-very, very odd. I somehow had the presence of mind to stand up and grab a chair. It was one of those wooden chairs with knobby tops and I rammed that into my the area underneath my rib cage. I can’t recall for sure but I think it took a couple of tries…and sure enough, it worked. I exhaled the giant chunk of steak (I was eating too fast and not chewing enough) and also vomited out the water and a tiny bit of food as well. It was an absolutely terrifying experience-scariest of my life. And I am 100% convinced I that, had I not done this, I would have died. Thanks for posting this video!

I’ll never forget my little brother almost choking to death surrounded by 30 family members sat at a restaurant table. We were all engrossed in our own conversation, & because my brother is Autistic, he wouldn’t naturally seek help. He just sat there, still, and silent (i.e same as he was before the choking lol). It was only once my uncle literally threw himself over to the other side of the table and lunged for my brother like homer lunges for Bart Simpson, that any of us realised anything was wrong. He proceeded to pull a 20 cm long piece of fried calamari out of my brothers throat. My brother only took one bite into it, enough to break it from being a calamari ring into a calamari pasta noodle. To this day, my brother refuses to eat calamari lol.

As someone with Autism, I find it interesting how we react to non-dangerous situations compared to life threatening ones. I get upset when someone puts our dinner plates in a different cabinet. But one time, when I was using the gas grill at home, I saw that fire was coming out, well, everywhere it shouldn't. But instead of freaking out or panicking, I just calmly go back into the house, find my parents and quietly say "the grill is on fire," as if that's an everyday occurrence. It's just interesting to me how we seem to react to situations differently from others.

@@alleycat616 it’s completely natural that you have residual trauma. I’m not sure if if something you would want to do, but you may be interested in seeking a couple EMDR therapy sessions for this. It was first developed for PTSD amongst veterans, but it’s now used widely for anyone with PTSD or who have experienced/witnessed a trauma & whilst they may not be debilitated by it, it still impacts them in a way which they don’t want lingering in their life. It’s likely you would only need a couple sessions. If it is something you choose to explore, make sure to select a therapist who is highly experienced and properly Trained, because any old therapist can label themselves as EMDR providers. You did an amazing job, and perhaps one day can take comfort in knowing that although something awful had happened, you had the skillset necessary to keep your son safe. And so, the risk to your son was significantly mitigated thanks to you, your skillset, and your presence of mind. Healing vibes your way,

The only time I was legitimately choking, I was in hospital. U’d been given two giant potassium supplement tablets, and one… got stuck. In order to get rapid help, I threw my cup (from breakfast) out the door. The nurse was getting ready to tell me why I couldn’t do that, and realized I couldn’t breathe, or cough, or speak. So I resorted to something more obvious. She said it one of the more creative ways a patient had requested immediate attention. And being the Quiet Patient, me throwing something was very weird

I've been that person but it was my shoe that was thrown. I didn't have much else to throw and it was quite noticable. I was not able to speak due to the fact I was having an allergic reaction to medicine and couldn't breathe. This was obvious once the nurse entered and heard my gasping for air plus the whole rash thing that was everywhere but I could not have told them anything. I had hit the call button but nobody came yet or responded. I thought I was going to die. I took action and it worked. Nurse thought I was being angry about something and instead I was about to cease to exist. Also those potassium tablets are ridiculously large and choke people. Done that. Thankfully not alone. Refuse to take them now. They make ones that dissolve in water. Request it. This is a don't die of choking on a giant potassium tablet life pro tip.

The #1 most choked on "food" is meat because humans are frugivores. We are not carnivores nor omnivores, but rather frugivores like orangutans and gorillas. Due to this, not only does meat, dairy, and eggs cause cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. in us, but our entire digestive system is unable to properly process animal products. Therefore, the throat is too narrow. True omnivores like dogs and true carnivores like cats have entirely different jaw, teeth, and esophagus structures than us, along with stomach acidity, intestinal shape and length, etc. So, people literally get meat stuck in their throats because our throats were never meant to handle that! That's why humans cook meat, to break down the protein layers to make it easier to chew, because if we had the natural teeth and jaws for meat chewing, we wouldn't need to cook! We also wouldn't need to cook it to kill diseases as natural predators have stomach acidity so high it kills everything! So, if you find yourself choking on rotting flesh it's because you were brainwashed by a huge, corrupt industry that is destroying the planet and literally kills and rapes babies! Remember that as you die from choking, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Covid, or any of the other thousands of illnesses caused by meat, dairy, and egg consumption! :D www.watchdominion.com

I have two 'I should be dead, but somehow I'm not' stories: I was very ill with pneumonia (a long time ago), and the doctors gave me these HUGE antibiotics I was supposed to take. Well, I tried to take one when I got home and started to choke on it. I was alone - but luckily, I was saved by my sick sense of humor. The irony of choking to death on a pill that was supposed to help me breathe made me laugh, and somehow it came out. My throat hurt for days. Also, when I was young, a horse bumped me into a high-powered electric fence - the kind that sends you flying. I remember feeling my heart stop - flying through the air, thinking, "Oh shit, that's not good," and hitting the ground so hard that it started again. That was a bizarre experience. I just got up and wandered off (and NEVER told my mom because I'm pretty sure she would have killed me). I wasn't supposed to be in that pasture.

Great video, well done and funny too. Many many Years ago ( I'm 75) a friend of mine who lived in large travel trailer was chocking to death and there was no one around, so he finally in a panic ran out the door onto the metal steps which he tripped on and he fell face first onto his stomach onto the ground and the meat dislodged and came up. The falling like he did saved his life. He was a big tall slim guy and when he hit the ground he did not put his hands up, I guess because he was in a panic, but it saved his life. I use to say only Richard could do something like that where God tripped him so he could live a little longer. My dear friend has long passed but I still miss that big goofy guy.

As someone who has bad allergies that cause phlegm in the throat, sadly I have Googled how to do a "Heimlich maneuver" on myself more than once... I hope I never have to use the techniques described, or to seek medical attention because of difficulty breathing, but when you live alone, this is good stuff to know when you start hacking up phlegm. To Jason's point, though, I live on a busy road. If I can get to the road before I lose consciousness (and maybe try to use the mailbox post to fix the choking myself), hopefully a passing car would help or call for help. 🤷‍♂️. You should've seen the look I got from a neighbor who stopped me outside of the house (lawn-mowing day) and asked about a suspicious globular puddle of something in my driveway... I too have a lot of drainage which can lead to choking. However, food does get stuck in the snot but does not block the airway. The result is a lot of coughing and gagging. The danger here in my opinion is aspiration. When I have actually had food block my airway it was a silent event because air could not move in or out of my system. Totally different experience.

I never knew how terrifying seriously choking could be until I experienced it myself. I had a real bad cough and hoarse throat only a couple months ago and was taking regularly cough drops / bonbons. So one afternoon I was sitting on the couch, my mother in the kitchen (which is connected to the living room, she could see me) and on the armchair next to me sat her husband (not my dad). I took a cough drop and it got dislodged in my throat. I couldn't speak or anything and it was just terrifying, really, as my mom just gave me a weird look and continued cooking when I tried to grab her attention, trying to get help from her, the other one didn't even notice. I felt like I'd die right there without anyone around me noticing despite them BEING there. Thankfully it was just a bonbon and after some coughing and moving around I was able to swallow it down as it had probably shifted a bit in its place and loosened up. I told my mum about it after but she didn't really get it, she didn't understand that I could have just been GONE that day and that still hits hard.

Another is to take small pieces. Biting on large chunks can cause a person to accidentally swallow it whole. One of the reasons Chocking is less in East Asian countries compared to America.
