Here I explain a very simple way to understand if a sword is well balanced or not. It is something we can all do, you just need to understand a very simple concept. Moreover I am also going to talk about several choices a blacksmith must make when forging a sword, in order to make a good cutting weapon or a goor thrusting weapon.

Thanks mate You're extremely helpful My sword's balance point is about 4 inches out from the hilt which I assume makes it a good medium between thrusting and cutting I guess when Windlass lives up to its name 😊

The Final Fantasy 7 Buster Sword would be a fun blade to show on this video. Or even Sephiroth's Masamune sword.

This is very late (I'm going through your videos from oldest to most recent), but I would still like to know your opinion on the following points. First, does the point of balance of a sword affect the style of fighting it is meant to be used with? And second, can an experienced swordsman/swordswoman adjust his/her technique to compensate for any issues with the balance of the sword?

im not an expert by any means but for the first it would make it better at the task it's balanced for and by default not as well at others for the second i see no reason why they would not be able to

I have a toy sword that is made of really strong plastic that I was thinking felt pretty well balanced. It's about 17 inches from tip to end of the hilt and balances about 5 inches from the guard. So, good cutting sword?

you've probably been made aware of this by now one way or another, but just in case: a sword's "tang" is an extention of the blade that goes through the hilt lengthwise and has nothing to do with ergonomic shaping. also, the grip being oval shaped not only makes it better to hold, it's also important for blade alignment, as it allows you to feel which way your blade is facing.

So you are saying that if the point of balance is too close to the blade and you hit someone with it, it won't cut them and they can just walk away unharmed. I personally like the 3 inch from the hilt rule some have, even a cutting sword needs to be fast and your own physical self can give the blade the speed it needs to make a hard strike, though a point of balance 6 inches away from the hilt is perfectly fine if the sword isn't outrageously heavy like thees replicas are today, what the real thing people don't understand is that the material is just as important as construction and design. Steel used in the past was pure carbon steel and didn't have all of thees alloys, though thees new alloys are good alloys, many of them make the steel heavy especially stainless steel, which will change the center of balance even if the sword is an exact copy of the original. People in the past wouldn't have wanted most of thees replicas.

5:40 The katana is way thicker than normal european swords European swords. Typical 1H sword is 4.8mm-2mm (Refferance: Albion Ritter sword), 1/2H swords are 5.8mm-3.7mm (Albion Mercenary) and 2H are 6,4mm-3.5mm (Del Tin 16th Century Venetian Two-Handed Sword) while Katanas are usaly 7.5mm-5.4mm (Dynasty Forge Daimyo Tamahagane Katana) another Katana 7.7mm-4.6mm (Skyjiro Forge Taka Katana) Tanto 6.9mm-4.8mm (Dynasty Forge Musha Tanto) Wakizashi 7.6mm-5.2mm (Thatisuki Roiyaru Sanmai Wakizashi) And stop using the word "replica" you do not know how to use it. "A replica is a copying closely resembling the original concerning its shape and appearance. An inverted replica complements the original by filling its gaps. It can be a copy used for historical purposes, such as being placed in a museum. Sometimes the original never existed. Replicas and reproductions can be related to any form of licensing an image for others to use, whether it is through photos, postcards, prints, miniature or full size copies they represent a resemblance of the original object." Tough it is a replica from a movie sword, does not mean it is a reliable source to use on Historical swords.

First of all, thank you for the information about the thickness of blades, this was one of my first videos so that information was not accurate, so now that you pointed that out I will make a note in the video to change that. On the usage of the word replica though I don't agree, I know how to use that word because it comes from latin, and I am Italian and we have that word in my language, The exact word which English borrows, so it would be like teaching an American the meaning of "blue Jeans". The word "replica" has two possible meaning: one is "a copy or reproduction of a work of art produced by the maker of the original or under his or her supervision." but the second possible meaning is "any close or exact copy or reproduction". To be even more precise in Italian and in late latin that word can be used to mean any "repetition" or "reproduction" of something (object). On the account of whether a certain replica is or is not reliable source I agree, it really depends, but I think that for general discussion even a close replica can be used. For example I have a reproduction of a corinthian helmet, but it's made of steel, as long as I say that the historical ones were made of bronze I think I can still use that item to help my viewers visualize the object we are talking about. Anyhow thank you for your comment.

Metatron You are right about he usage of the word replica an I apologize if I appeared so aggressive in that comment. But I still stand strong about he usage of wall hangers as a visual aid in your video, I have seen too many times that somebody has used wall hangers in cutting tests because they think it is a real sword and that is dangerous. I suggest that in future videos that you make it a bigger point that when you use wall hangers and non historical swords as visual aid that you tell the viewers that they are not "real swords", and also inform about how the historical swords were like in greater detail so not to confuse those that does not know it already.
