HOW TO Update Nikon FTZ Adapter FIRMWARE

Whenever I get a new camera, the first thing I do is make sure that my firmware is completely up to date. Is this something that you normally do for your lens adapter though? Today, I want to show you the method of updating your FTZ adapter's firmware, which can also be used to update your Nikon Z firmware as well.

Hey Guys! I forgot to mention that you don’t necessarily need to use an XQD card if your camera uses SD cards. I hope this helps you!

I have a great question about this! I once used a lumix gh4 and it gave me problems and would stop recording on its own. People said maybe I’m using the wrong sd card. Can this situation also happen with the z6 ii since we are able to record at such high resolution?

I clicked on your vid because it was one of the shorter ones. Thanks for keeping it to the point and a clear and excellent description. At first I almost hit the thumbs down. I usually don't watch is someone says 'whats up guys'. Many many KZfaqrs say this. Just say hi or glad you are here or something other than the before mentoned. I can see you put alot of time into your vids and they are good and just thought you would want to know this.

So without this firmware update you aren’t able to update F mount lens firmware on the Z camera body like you would with your DSLRs. Also you won’t be able to use certain F mount lenses with second generation Z cameras at all.

Does a lens need to be mounted onto the adapter and attached to the camera to do the adapter update, or does the adapter only need to be attached to the camera body to perform the adapter update?

Maybe II missed something, but know that you have to have the FTZ adaptor attached to the camera for the firmware update to work. Thanks for getting me started.

Thanks for your help. It took me awhile because I didn't have the latest Z6 camera firmware and I wasn't aware that I had to have the FTZ adapter connected to the camera prior to upgrading the FTZ firmware. (In retrospect that seems logical now ... but hindsight is 20/20. :-). How do you know if there is new firmware available for your camera or the FTZ? Do you periodically check the Nikon website?

You can check the website or sign up for updates on their website. I’m in quite a few Nikon groups and they are always on top of posting when the new firmware drops.

old vid, but i need help. i loded the file(bin) over to my sd card. and in to the camera(z6) going to the update page but dont get the uppdate butten. only getting "done" and " deelete firmwire" if i push delete its ask me if i want to delete adapter firmwire. what to do? i hope u know

Hey Colton. I have updated the FTZ adapter on my Z6 to firmware 1.10. This firmware update was supposed to enable me to check and update the firmware on my F-Mount lenses. It does not do that. When I mount an F lens and check firmware it just shows the current firmware for the FTZ adapter. It does not show the firmware for my F lens.

Did that help with any focusing issues? I get mine z6ii and adapter soon but I haven't heard great things about ftz when using f mount lenses. What your experience with this?

I don't have any issues with my FTZ focusing on my lenses. I do know that certain Nikkor lenses need you to update the adapter with the Zii series or the lenses autofocus won't work at all.

Allegedly you can also copy/update firmware through SnapBridge. Colton - are you aware if this works? nikonimglib.com/snbr/onlinehelp/en/08_master_08.html

Just got the Z6ii and FTZii. Tried to update MA/FTZii firmware as described in instructions and your video, but I do not have the 'Update' option in menu. Any ideas? I only have the FTZii mounted on the camera when I turn it on and the bin file is not in a folder, and formatted the CF Express card prior to starting.

Yes, it’s the only way to get the adapter to show up when installing the firmware. I should have mentioned that in the video, my bad for assuming it was implied!

You've got to make sure the adapter is attached to the camera.

It allows you to be able to update the firmware for specific Nikkor lenses through the mirrorless body which you couldn't do unless you had a DSLR still. Also, it allows for functionality with the mark 2 z6 and z7. Apparently, users weren't able to use their Nikkor lenses on those bodies without the update.
