In this episode we’re going to show you how to upgrade an old Gateway Laptop by swapping out the IDE hard drive to use Micro SD Card and see how it performs.
Operation 8-Bit is a grass-roots not for profit group that helps to support charities like the Tour De Force 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride and the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) by raising funds through the restoration and resale of classic computers and video games.
We are supported by donations from people just like you, and these donations can make an amazing difference to helping the organizations and families we support.
If you have an old Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo that you (or your kids) never use anymore, or if there is an old computer just gathering dust in your attic or in the back of a closet that you would like to donate, please let us know by visiting our website.

The sequential write speed being slow is the failing of the physics used for solid state architecture in general it takes time for the data to be stored, one way modern SSD are able to get around this is by including cache (RAM chips) on modern SSDs. The cache allows the computer to make small to medium bursts of writes to the drive and trickle it onto the actual flash chips when the drive idles between writes and reads. When you do large data writes that exceed the cache it slows down to the max speed at which the flash itself can write. This is why you can write a word document very quickly, but not store multi-gig files very quickly. One of the problem with SD cards and other removable flash storage, is that they seldom have much if any cache. This is why the OS install took so long that they forgot about it. While an HDD is actually not that bad at large sequential writes compared to an SD card. But the problem comes with random or non-sequential. A HDD has to physically find the places on the magnetic disk, so if it a file is fragmented across the disk or it needs to read a bunch of different files scattered around the disk, it can take forever as it has to seek out each block/sector. When reading data off a flash is reality easy, all the bits are equally accessible at the same time. So it doesn't matter if it is sequential or random, and infact modern SSD's actually randomize spreading the data across multiple chips to spread the write cycles across the entire space and extend the longevity of the device. TLDR: SD cards write data slower but read data more quickly and do not have seek time from having to mechanically read the data.

It is usual practice when working inside a laptop to remove the battery! What would make this conversion really neat would be to engineer a way to expose the SD slot externally. Subscribed just now.

Hi - nice video, i will need to binge watch more of them Question - the 44 pin hard plastic male to female adapter you use is that available on line i need one and cant find it on amazon - i am restoring a Toshiba Tecra S1 ad the ide died finally - i have ordered a ribbon cable and 44 pins CF card but that plastic shell seems better BTW - on my older machines i find Pentium 4 etc with 512 ram i use XP OEM or SP1, with 1G i use SP2 and more than 1 GIG ram i update to the latest service pack - each pack uses much more memory - i tested this with both Dell 2400 Celeron and a IBM 8033 ?? Pentium 4 If you dont use the XP machine on general internet you might as well stay on initial release and not upgrade to the service packs - i have 3 XP machines and they are only really on the local network - they can "talk to the net" but very rarely unless i quickly need to grab a driver The CF and SD memory card read / write wear will be reduced considerable if you disable virtual memory swap file and also disable hard drive indexing, the extra ram memory will perform much better and make up for any disadvantages lost by the HDD swap file and indexing Regards George

Hi George Glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you like the others as well. Not sure if I'm binge worthy though :-) I dug back through my notes and it looks like I got that HD caddy on ebay. I did a quick search to see what was out there for your Toshiba and there are a few different options that are pretty inexpensive. Great tip on reducing the wear on the SD card! Thanks for sharing

Thank you, but a bit confused. What exactly would you like to see with XP? We've got a few things n the pipe, and maybe we could do some tweaks to match what you (and maybe others) are looking for. Please let us know!

I wonder if this would work on a modchipped original Xbox?

Pretty sure folks do that, but might be sensitive because the OS writes more to disk

@@randomguydoes2901 I've looked around, but I've never encountered anyone who has documented doing so. There's no videos on youtube or anything.

I would not be surprised if that Gateway laptop maxed out at 2GB RAM, which is going to slow down any OS.

Would have had even better performance if you had converted the machine to Linux as well as greater security.

I would be deeply concerned about the lack of wear leveling. It may have been discussed later in the video, but the droning of the repetitious background music had me quitting early. Nice vid, but...

We never actually addressed the issue of wear leveling. But you are correct this would be a possible issue for this mod. Sorry you dropped early, the outtakes at the end of this one are pretty good. Although this was the third video we released, it was actually the first one we wrote and produced, so there were a lot of things that we were still learning. Viewer feedback has been very important in helping us to improve so thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment. Hopefully you enjoy some of our other videos that will be coming out soon.
