Logic board disaster victim myself. Were you able to just pull your hard drive and put it in the working spare? I was trying to clean under one of my keys because it was getting stuck . . . But I’m an idiot because I was watching KZfaq while I pried up the key with a razor blade (I know I know). I touched the board and that was the end of it.

Yes, however when disconnecting the connectors be careful. I had to replace one of the paper thin wires to the battery because I grabbed it with a tweezers and crushed the wires. @@nickmoesq

Thank you for the easy to follow breakdown! My son's 2017 MBP 13" fried the Logic Board so rather than have it repaired, we just bought him a new 14" MBP $300 off at Costco, which he likes a LOT more than the 13"! He hadn't backed up his hard drive much, so we need to pull the old drive out to recover all his files, but didn't want to pay a shop close to $200. Coming from a Dell Latitude laptop, I had no IDEA Apple makes working on their computers such a PITA. I thought I just needed the right Pentalobe bits to pull the screws, but just getting the back cover off is tricky, so glad I watched your video to know what we're up against. Cheers!

Hi, thanks you for the tutorial. I changed the internal ssd on my macbook pro A1708 as it was no longer working. After installing the new ssd, I start the computer in recovery mode but it does not appear in the disk utility window. Do you have a solution to my problem?

I have 2017 macbook pro, the last Apple I will ever buy. I mean, come on: keyboard is useless, it gets jammed on dust particles and it's awful in feel. Battery is completely dead within 5 years (my 2011 macbook pro still works). And if I want to replace the battery, I need a special pentalobe P5 screwdriver just to open the thing. Then, if I decide to not change the battery, I can always copy files from the SSD... but NO! It's a proprietary 22/24 pin whatever SSD. Can't just plug it in a linux or PC. You need an ADAPTER for this. I mean, why anyone would want this much pain from a single company? Not me, never again. I'm super happy with my Thinkpad that has AWESOME keyboard for those who type fast.

Hi mate. It’s either the SSD, or the SSD cable that’s at fault. …if you work through the video steps you may be able to get it working before replacing anything. Hope this helps🤞 Adam

if the ssd was the factory one, i think apple are doing a free replacement for some macbooks. Search up macbook pro ssd program to find out more.

Do you have a complete video of backing up your internal SSD with the OS? And then booting the OS from the external to the new internal SSD?

Hi, Nope I havent made a video on that step yet. You can search how to back up your mac, I use 'TimeMachine' its free with your mac. Then once backed up, you can use 'macOS Recovery' to intstall a new version of Mac OS or tranfer everything from your TimeAmcine backup. Im sure theres lots of curent videos on theses steps. Hope this helps.

For a laptop, Yes, to prevent accidental discharge while changing out your SSD. If you're changing or replacing an SSD on a desktop computer, all you have to do is unplug the computer before proceeding.

I have two A1707, one is good, with 250GB hd and the other is 1Tb with a cracked screen. Can I take the 1Tb from the bad one and place in the smaller sized A1707?

Hi Emily. Not wanting to quote something wrong here. I would reccomend buying from a website such as 'crucial' . On that site you can run a system seach, or type in your system and it will show the compatble products. Hope this helps. Best

Is there something wrong with my battery screw? I’m using the T5 as the video says to try and remove it, but the screwdriver just spins on top of the screw. It won’t budge. Same for the screws that need the P5. What should I do? (edit: the screwdrivers are brand new too)

I had the same issue brand new screwdriver could not get any of the screws out in the motherboard as hard as I tried and I would have stripped it if I tried any harder. you need needle nose pliers to loosen the screws initially and then you can use a screwdriver

Im no Mac expert, but I think if mac had the option avalible at the time of purchase to upgrade to 1T , then I say its okey to do so now. Im sure youll find more details on mac forum to double check befoe buying. Best of luck.

I have the issue on my Macbook pro 2017 where I get the folder questionmark.. Sometimes it would work, most of the time not. I bought and replaced the SSD hoping it would solve the problem, but it doesn't even show up when trying to reinstall mac OS... any ideas on what else it could be, or other things I could check?

@@redesigners sadly no… On the 2017 13-inch model the ssd-connector i soldered to the board. So unless you have a bunch of soldering gear and experience on how to solder on motherboards it’s very difficult.. Another option is to replace the whole motherboard, which is pretty ridiculous since it’s only the ssd connector that’s broken. The response from Apple was that they typically don’t recommend changing the motherboard as it’s too expensive… I think the only viable option is to sacrafice a port for an external drive and boot from there. For us this laptop has become useless x)

It is also possible you are using the wrong recovery mode. If you just press Command + R and try to install Mac OS there ,, it will try to install an old version of mac os which may not see your ssd. If you press Option+Command+R you will enter Internet Recovery ... it will install the most current mac OS for your Mac ( for this one its Ventura) and you should see your SSD available for the instalation.

@@SmartPhotoVault Why must you disconnect the battery? Is this one of those "just because it's a good idea", or is there an actual reason for it? Like if the laptop is off, does it still power up the SSD drive? Kind of like an anti-static wristband, "because it's a good idea", but in practice I think 0.2% of people do it.

it's good practice to cut power totally to avoid possible power related mishaps (what if you accidentally short the power to some other component, etc). Unless you're tring to diagnose a problem that requires the machine to be on, there's no reason to take unnecessary risks

If I understand correctly, any 13”, 15”, and 16” pros (2016 and up) are soldered for models that have touchbar. If you have a pre-2019 model with no touchbar, then it is not soldered and can be upgraded as seen in this video.
