All went well for me, no problems with the upgrade. I think the PID settings are off though, has the hot end will overshoot by 8 degrees before settling in. I may run an autotune PID later to see what values it produces.

I did some print test, and initially I had problem with strings etc. Then I found this print profile: github.com/ceakins/3d-Printer-Profiles/tree/master/cura/Material-Templates/JGAurora/A5/3.2.1 Not sure who is the mastermind behind it. I had initially tried this cura profile before upgrading my firmware on the Jgaurora A5, and it was horrible. Then I tried it again after upgrading the firmware, and now my printer prints waaaay tooo nice!!!! WOW! I'm so happy :D. I get quality prints that easily competes with much more expensive 3d-printers.

Sam, hopefully you can help, New to the A5 and 3d printing, but have some major issues. Looks like my unit was built in Nov 2017. I updated to Marlin software using your instructions. The issue came with my first print that stopped around 65%. I was using a USB cable and the most current version of Cura. The print was going fine, when I went into the front touch screen and was reducing the fan speed, all the sudden the print just came to a stop. Prints were printing like garbage prior to this, and I've been tweaking the temp, bed temp along with print speeds. Prints continued to print poorly, so I deleted Cura, reinstalled, deleted JGCREAT and reset the printer to the newest (January 2018) hex file of the factory software that I found . I am trying to figure out what is going wrong and if I need to update the touchscreen firmware along with how to update it. I've tried to update firmware again, and re-install cura, same results, maybe worse now, as prints are failing sometimes before the bed and extruder come to temp. This last print failed once via usb, didn't even come up to full temp on bed or extruder, and I tried again via thumb drive and again it failed at the top of the brim. I was tried JGCreat that time. LCD firmware type: MKS tft version: 3.0.0

If you have a modern version of Marlin working adding a bltouch would be possible as long as it's got a spare pin port for the probe as long as the board has enough memory to upload the extra features.

Hello Samuel, first of all, thanks for your explanations in this great, comprehansible video! :-) I'm very new in the 3D printer scene ^^ and it will be my first printer. I heard about some limitations within the firmware of the JG-Aurora and issues to get spare parts or custom service from the producer. If I buy an 'JG-Aurora A5 3D printer' next two month, will I get the revised firmware you made for your own, to upload it on my new printer? Or would you advise me not to buy this printer? Can it be a "perfect" working product with your help? - Plan B would be the 'AnyCubic i3 Mega', but it's constructionspace is much smaller and it's printing speed slower. Best regards, and thanks for your request. Dennis, germany

Great video. I just purchased an A5, my second 3d printer, based on the information you and Da Hai provided. So far I am very impressed. I have just set it up and tested everything but have not yet done any printing. I have a few questions. If I update to the community firmware does it also provide LCD access to the EEprom and the mesh leveling controls? If not I beleive these would be great features to include as I would prefer not using my computer to level the bed. Thank you

Thanks Bernie! Yes, if you update the main motherboard firmware AND the lcd board firmware you will be able to do mesh levelling via LCD. The LCD is pretty touchy so it may take a couple of tries, but you can do it via the LCD. Don't forget to enable the mesh bed levelling in your start gcode - add the line: M140 S1

Samuel, I updated my Jgaurora a5 firmware. You mention in your vid that with the new custom firmware the error "stopping after a few layers/mid-printing" vanished. However, I still experience the same error over and over again. Tested multiple usb sticks. Multiple cura versions. Also PID tuning, because maybe my instable temperature would cause the printer to stop. Which would be inconvenient, because it stops in the exact same spot each time. Anyone got some advice how to further tackle this issue? thx! PS: Did not update my LCD firmware btw, would that possibly fix it?
@SamPinchesMakerShop
@SamPinchesMakerShop 5 жыл бұрын
If you haven't already, then I definitely would suggest trying the LCD firmware update, it could possibly fix it. There are actually several hardware revisions of the MKS LCD module too - some of the MKS lcd modules are just plain dodgy, but it's the minority thankfully. See how you go. The other advantage of updating the LCD firmware is that it actually shows thermal errors on screen when the occur, which old versions don't do, they just appear to stop printing. PID tuning is possible to do with the custom marlin firmware. For best temperature stability results you'll want to tune the PID at the printing nozzle/bed temperature you actually use. Feel free to post on the forum (jgauroraforum.com) if you need help, its tricky to do via youtube.

Thanks for answering. I'll keep that in mind if I pull the trigger on buying this printer. My deskjet is wifi and uses the standard usb port. Oh I was wrong! It does have a square port in the corner. I've only ever used the Wifi on it. I don't even think it came with a cable and the main instructions were for a wireless setup. I did watch your review which lead me to this video. Thank you very much for that. Thanks for the video and explaining how the boards work together. I've messed with arduino's and flashed current Marlin on my other printer awhile back. So I'm a little familiar with the process. I just got a used A5 and it seems kinda flaky. Was thinking an update might help. I noticed in the Marlin example_configurations directory the A5's .h files are present. Is this the same as your doing here? Have your files been added to Marlin? Or is this even more than the 2 .h files? Thanks again for the video. I didn't know you could upload the hex files with Cura. Always wondered what that option was for :)

Hello there, We bought an Aurora A5 model printer. With 1.75 filament and 100% flow adjustment, we were printing well using the Cura slicer program. One day, during the printing, the power cord of the heating table was disconnected from the connection point, but the printer continued to print until we noticed the situation. The table was cold and the printed piece left the table. The rest of the press went wrong. We were using the printer on the computer with the repetier program. We cleaned everything and wanted to go back to the press. But there was another problem. When we connected the new print, the printer was starting to print, but the nozzle was squeezing a small amount of filament. The filament is not holding onto the table. The flow level was not good. But manually, when we extrude the filament, the nozzle smoothly flows the filament. When we went to press, filament could not flow in the desired amount. We struggled to solve this, we changed the nozzle several times, changed the heater aluminum block, changed the nozzle heater, removed the filament pusher motor, checked and changed the gear, but we could not be successful. We changed the slicer program we used, experimented with different computers, changed our usb memory, we could not overcome this problem. After working around for days, we re-adjusted the filament diameter to 1.40mm and the flow rate to 150% in the Cura program. This time the printing was successful. However, we are uncomfortable with this situation. Why are we experiencing this problem, what is the solution, please help. Thanks in advance.

Yeah... the first time it happened was via usb pendrive... it happened 3 times that way... and yesterday it happened using the raspberry pi... have no idea what to do... this last time I paused the prin via the octoprint, re-homed X and Y and resumed printing and it worked out, had to do this 2 times in the same print... it seams that in the midle of the print job it just looses the X and Y home points!!!

Hello all! I bought another JGAurora A5. It came with the reworked build plate and updated firmware. I flashed the custom firmware following you latest instruction and all appeared to go smooth until I tried using the printer. The Z axis would only move up, Y axis would only move in one direction and X axis would not move. Homing would not work as well. Only moved up on the Z axis. I flashed the A5 original firmware and all worked well. I tried 2 more times with the same results. I'm back to the A5 original firmware, which I really don't like. It homes right onto the build plate! Is it possible that JGAurora has somehow prevented flashing custom firmware? Any ideas would be appreciated. Tom

Samuel Pinches thanks for the insight. The X axis just jerks about 1/2 inch. I'll try your suggestion. I'm also going to flash the old A5 hex code, then try the custom firmware again to see if that makes a difference. Sorry you're out of commission for a while.

hi Sam.. I have exactly the same issue as Thomas.. had to flash the old hex code to get the printer working again... also Iam quite noob on software and hardware issues :-(... would it be possible to show on how to get the Marlin software recognize the home position for the JG aurora A5 printer? and downloaded the prontface software and used the G0 Z0 X0 Y0 code and the extruder head come to the home position as earlier.. so how do i get this corrected in the marlin software now?..

more trouble... i got the old hex code back in the printer and now even after bed level the prints are not sticking to the bed and is all "blotched" ... is this because the z axis is now misaligned and not accurate (as the z axis went all the way up and hit the literally hit the top after i tried to home the printer after updating to marlin?...

@@dwmatthews113 You can flash back to the factory firmware without any difficulty via the same method. I've linked the factory firmware page on there too. @@SamPinchesMakerShop Just wondering if you came across an issue like this and if i am right about the problem. I levelled the 4 corners of the bed, did the mesh level. Start a print and the bed is too loose. Level the corners again and then it goes fine but its every time and its always way off. The gantry is level, no bent rods. Could this be a microswitch issue? I noticed the microswitch kind of sticks to the gantry like static but doesnt do it on my other A5S and that prints fine.

Can you connect to the printer with pronterface? (Make sure cura and arduino are closed) if not, the bootloader on your motherboard may be damaged. Make sure you unplug the LCD when flashing or this will happen. To restore the bootloader, please see: jgaurorawiki.com/a5/bootloader.
