You can run all kinds of router bits on your CNC router. All it takes is a bit of experimentation to find the proper speeds and feeds. Kevin takes you through adding a 3/4" Bowl Bit to your library and gives you some starting settings. #cncrouter #bowlbit

Love bowl bits. To ease the use of the bowl bit I normally create a pocket with a 1/4 endmill and use my Amana bowl bit to do an offset contour around the pocket. Works nice.

Good plan. It’s an interesting balance to find the optimal settings to remove the most material in the shortest amount of time. The DOC with a bowl bit is larger than the DOC of a 1/4” endmill, but the stepover can be larger with the 1/4” bit. Perhaps something to test would be leaving scallops with a larger stepover in the roughing passes with a bowl bit, then see how those clean up on the finishing pass. This might make the bowl bit more efficient time wise……might.

Just started with my 5 Pro, having fun. Now I will be looking for a bowl bit. One observation though. You tend to use Carbide Create as a generic phrase when often you are talking about Carbide Create Pro. Many of us can't at the moment afford the Pro version and it does have features not available in the standard version. It would be helpful if you state up front that you are talking about the Pro version. Thanks.

I've always used a finishing pass of .05 inch (1.27mm) stepover for a 3/4 bowl bit. Sure the machine runs longer but its less labor sanding, and my trays have some small pockets that you cant really sand. I still hit it with a 120 grit Abrasive Buffing Wheel on a Dremel to smooth it out before finish. You should do a series like this for other bits.

@carbide3d How did you finish those trays? Mineral oil, lacquer, rub-on wax? They look amazing and I want the same results! Thanks!

Hey John, Just simple food-safe mineral oil with Beeswax. This is the one we have in the shop: a.co/d/0IMoW8b Optionally, we've also used beeswax alone. It provides a deep color and some protection against moisture.

Great info. What I would like to see a list of the available variables in the expression editor and the general keyboard shortcuts. I haven't found them documented in any of the help resources.

Hey James, Here's the list of Keyboard Shortcuts: carbide3d.com/carbidecreate/shortcuts And a thread talking about the topic. Newbie here. Enjoying my S5P! I don’t see bowl bits in the Shop. Are they not available, or am I missing something? TIA

Is there a list of the expressions and what they do? Like where you added the t in the depth of cut. That's a cool deal. And i love to use that.

Think of expressions as entering an equation that gets immediately solved. Where Excel executes an equation repeatedly, Carbide Create executes the equation when prompted. T+.1 t-.1 Entering a Diameter into the Radius box for a circle - 24.567/2= It's present throughout the program. When in doubt, try a mathematical expression and hit "="

Hi.i have a question. How do u create different depth pockets to cut out on your cnc. For example u have a 20mm thick stock and cut a 5mm pocket out, then need to cut different shapes pockets another 5mm in to the stock?
@carbide3d
@carbide3d Ай бұрын
Whatever feature you want milled into the bottom of a pocket, have that toolpath begin at the depth of the previous pocket. In your example, the "different shapes" would begin at 5mm and go to whatever additional depth you specify.

I really don’t like the tool number. Meaningless and useless. This is what pops up on the screen in motion telling you what tool is required for the next step. NOT the description. And if you are using more than one custom bit, it is easy to forget which is which. Come on guys. This could be so much better

@carbide3d
@carbide3d Ай бұрын
Marc, you are correct. A proper bowl bit would have a broader flat to the head of the bit. A quick Google search for "Cove Box," "Core Box," or "Bowl Bits" results in images of each of those types of bits. Core and Cove appear to be interchangeable terms.
