Oh wow! A/B is pretty narrow. You might wanna buy something more like Whites, through Bakers in Oregon. They have a lot of narrow widths in their MP model (Barrie last) and others. Good luck! Lemme know if you need any more input 🙌🏽

Either I wasn't reading the Brannock right or the store had a janky one, but either way I went to two other stores today to get measured and I can confidently say I'm an 8.5C with an 8.5 arch length luckily. I'm actually looking at getting a pair of Grant Stone's Diesel boots this spring and was wondering if you had any experience with the boot/last? I have a 7.5D in the Brass Boot and my foot is swimming in there, without my insoles and thick wool socks I can tie it up and literally feel the boot bounce around off my foot if I shake it. I'm waiting on an email from Grant Stone, but just figured I'd check to see if you had any specific wisdom to pass on here! Obviously gonna downsize to a 7D at least, but not sure if a 6.5D would fit better given my C width.

@@user-hc5pi5zh5j hey! This is good news 😂 C is much more manageable. I also am a C width. I’m 10.5C arch length and 10C overall length. Typically, in a case like ours, we would take the largest size as our true size. So you’re 8.5C and I’m 10.5C….I have worn multiple sizes of Floyd last and Leo last, and the most successful for feet like ours is 1 down from Brannock. You don’t wanna go down further from that cuz then you’ll be compromising your ball joint and toes. So, 7.5D Leo last *should* fit you pretty well. It’s not as roomy as Floyd. What’s interesting is, their shoes fit me better than their boots. The boots have the voluminous shaft, so they’re harder to tighten up enough in the right places, unlike the shoe. Hope that helps!

Glad the video helped! The question about the 45 degrees is a very good question. Here's what's going on with that: measuring at a 45 degree angle takes the measurement with the foot's arch uncollapsed. If you are going to wear footwear with substantial arch support which prevents the arch from collapsing (like a PNW boot like Nicks or Whites that has insanely high and stiff arch support), then it makes sense to measure at a 45 degree angle. BUT in most cases, your footwear will not support your arch enough to prevent your arch from collapsing when you stand up, so it is best in that case to measure standing up, because that is how your feet and footwear will interact in real life. Does that make sense?

Sorry, it’s probably just sloppy cuz of the video. I was bending over n stuff to film, which made my foot sit funny and the measurement weird. I’ve measured many times on this device, and my arch length is definitely 10.5. So I was just calling it out as what was correct, even though in the video maybe it was a bit off and I didn’t realize it…..Honestly, it’s so small in the video that I’m surprised you can even see the numbers.

I actually now prefer the extra width of D. I find C too tight for my taste now, as I don’t prefer an overly snug fit anymore. But C is good if it’s dress shoes or something.

@@thevintagefuture6567 I don’t like my boots snug either. I like my fit to be almost loose but not if that makes sense. But D’s are are very slightly loose side especially in the heel. I have skinny ass ankles and low volume feet anyway. The best fitting last for me is the Alden Trubalance in a D width though. That last is so darn comfy because of the smaller heel width to larger forefront.

@@MarcP5267 that’s a great last! I think you would love the Viberg 2040. That and Trubalance are a similar shape, and both low volume for feet like ours

@@thevintagefuture6567 ok thanks! I’ll look into that 2040 last. Trubalance is lower profile / height than the likes of Red Wings. However I do wear Red Wing work line boots for work as I do medium to heavy duty labor. Work line boots are a different animal than the heritage line. I wear an 8.5C in the Red Wing 606’s which is my Brannock. In fact I was thinking that the made in USA work boots some styles are a good alternative to heritage type boots.

Good question! In most cases, you just go with whichever measurement is longer, or split the difference if needed.

@@thevintagefuture6567 My example wasn’t correct. I have been jamming my foot in boots to small for me, But the break point in the vamp is correct. Now in size 10.5 my toe’s have room But the break point is to close to the laces. This can be remedied a bit with wider but smaller sizing.

@@edbehan1306 ah ok, so you’re saying you feel like you have too much room in the front of the boots? I think that’s actually ok. And like I said, you can split the difference if you want too. Like, instead of buying a 10.5 next time, buy a 10. Fit/comfort is king. I wouldn’t worry about where the crease is, as long as the fit is good and your flex point is more or less aligned well.

@@mikester6192 ah I see! Well, I would still go E. If you immediately don’t like it, they have a great free exchanges policy. As long as you don’t crease it or damage it before deciding. I’m a C width and their D width Leo feels plenty snug. I wear medium thickness wool socks (for reference).

@@mikester6192 oh yeah, if you have some decent volume, definitely get E I think. But as I said, you can always exchange for free! And they have EE for many models I think, so you could go up from there. Their employees like Gio are very helpful.

It’s more about ball alignment. The best explanation I’ve heard is comparing shoe fit to glove fit for your hand. If you wear size Large gloves, you would still need size Large even if you chopped your fingers off. Cuz it’s about the joint where your finger meets your hand. Same with boots. You size for your largest Brannock size or thereabouts, which aligns your foot ball, and once you do this, it doesn’t matter as much how much toe room there is as long as it’s not insanely long or uncomfortably short.

@@brettbjornson I’m this case, you would call 10 your size since it’s a bit longer. If the two measurements were a whole size apart you might split the difference, but here you just take your larger size. You can of course fudge it a 1/2 size small when that works for you, but that wouldn’t be the starting point 👍🏽

Unfortunately, the issue is most often that salespersons don’t know how the heck to use a Brannock device. It’s really not that hard, and it is very reliable. But if they are untrained, there’s no fixing that in-store. Sounds like you were helped by poorly trained people. Another common issue is the salesperson ignoring arch length and only accounting for overall length. The last common issue is them getting your Brannock right but then thinking that means that’s your shoe size in all shoes. But if a certain last fits large, you of course would need to size down, not take your Brannock size. The salespersons often just give you the Brannock size when they should have used it as a reference to size down from for certain lasts…..All that said, there should be some space in front of the toes, but 2” sounds excessive, for most shoes anyways (there are some shoes where you’re supposed to have extra room in front of the toes.

I agree, it’s a bummer that manufacturers don’t all coordinate their sizing. The reason is because many of them have lasts and sizing conventions which date back decades or sometimes even 100+ years, a time before globalization. These traditions and ilks of the craft formed in different environments, countries, cultures, and only recently have had to coexist within the same international market. I’m sure they could all sync their jargon, but it would take a massive effort.

@@thevintagefuture6567 retroactiove i suppose, but the japanese already use cm and so does china (though JP is measuring diagonally). Moving forward, i feel like this wouldn't be too difficult especially for those that already have jp added. Somehow people arent even bothered by it, which is weird to me. Like my EU sizes differ from 41.5 to 44 for adidas for example. First thing i have to do is find out which one refers to 27cm. But i guess it is what it is.

I should have stated that this video is in regards to heritage boots specifically. These boots typically don’t have arch support. PNW boots like Nicks and Whites do have arch support, but they use their own sizing methods, not the Brannock device, which makes the Brannock less relevant to sizing PNW brands. For heritage boots or any footwear that does not have arch support, if you use your Brannock measurement with your arch not collapsed, your Brannock reading and actual wearing experience will be incompatible. The idea is, if your arch will be collapsed in the footwear you will use, the most accurate arch length to measure for with the Brannock will be the arch length with the arch collapsed.

Oooooh! Haha….Yes, you’re absolutely right. I have flat feet and always have. One of the reasons I like to wear boots and have some arch support is to assist with that probation you indicated. @@thevintagefuture6567 I have that a lil in my right foot. Which is why I only buy boots with arch support and a heel that supports the inner part of my heel. Fro example I really like the Indy boot from alden but For whatever reason alden Indy boots enforce pronation which is the exact opposite of what a flat foot needs.

So funny you say that- I had the exact same experience with Alden Trubalance. Barrie worked nicely for my flat feet though.
