This video demonstrates how to cut out a bad section of exhaust pipe and splice in a new butt union. Check out this inexpensive and reliable way to fix a leaky pipe. This repair cost ten dollars and a couple of hours of work. Shown is a Pontiac Grand Am.

Thanks for the your video. I had the same idea to fix broken section of my exhaust pipe but was planning to cut a piece off both ends so I could go and size up a good fitting adapter at the store which has a snug fit on both ends. Then put a good high temperature sealant on the pipe so no exhaust noise. Before I clamp down both ends might look for good muffler tape to to wrap around the adapter and pipe. Not sure yet. But seeing your video helps a lot. Thanks!

good video. If you use sealant pre cat, make sure there is no silicone in it, it could destroy your cat. Also, little hint, try not to tighten clamps where the nuts are down because when you drive, they could catch road debris

I don't think that would be as long lasting as the made for exhaust sealant. I've noticed that exhaust gasses are very corrosive.

@@JohnSmith-uy7sv You must have been going to all the wrong shops then, or had some really janky stuff on your vehicle. I've used this exact method on my exhaust and I live in PA....there is no problems with this passing inspection. If the exhaust is not leaking then it's good to go. You can wrap a soda can around the pipes with two hose clamps and its fine. Duct tape over rust holes in the body of a car passes too. I've taken my car to plenty of different garages, including dealership service depts. over the years and never had a problem.
@JohnSmith-uy7sv

I'm not a janky stuff person. Pa has always been super stirct even years ago with a stop of rust they would fail it. They were just stupid crazy. I grew up in western pa in the 50's , 60's and 70's. I should know.

good, only, not so sure the sealant is going to help anything, don't think any liquids work on exhaust fixes, matter of fact, it might turn into a lubricant at high temp later down the road and cause things to loosen up. you can look into it, but I got a big "I don't think so" on the liquid sealant

I'm new to exhaust repairs - in the middle of a break doing one now, and welding too, but I think it would've been best to do it in a professional method, and in not doing so, you were "penny wise, pound foolish". Drop the exhaust if necessary, grind off all the rust with a grinder and wire attachments, MIG weld in 2 flanges with a gasket in the middle, and bolt them together. Right? Eliminating the flange joint can make the exhaust system much harder to work on in the future! I thought I was going to learn something from you, until about 4:07 when your rust cleaning consisted of brushing them off, and using lacquer thinner, then you went for some pipe sealer. Really? Is that recommended by the pipe sealant manufacturer - on hot exhaust surfaces - because I had no idea something like that existed? Only ideas I liked was using that cable and cable lock, and jack for support, so I guess you did something right. Thanks for your time.

You could have spent a lot more time, a lot more money, and done a lot more work but I doubt you would have had a better result. That repair is likely to outlast the rest of the exhaust.
