Thanks very much. I'm trying to find out how much resistance to expect when draggin the feeler gauge through the gap and your video is one of the clearest for defining this,thanks again

I used to buipd a lot of things with my Grandad and whole working in his shed i always saw these and wondered what they were for. So i was jusy about to buy a set of digital callipers and they came with the Feeler blades and i remembered my grandad having them so decided to look it up and found your channel so thank you for a great explanation and explaining with the magazines on how it should feel resistance wise so again thank you.

It is easy to tell the difference between a light drag and no drag with a little practice - I recall having seen a senior mechanic using enough force to almost bend a 'guage in half and calling that as 'right' when it finally slipped through. My personal preference, where practical, is to use two blades - one the nominal size and the other either one size up or down, depending on application, it is much faster and clearer what fits and what doesn't. With some applications, such as roller tip rockers/followers, it can be more difficult as between the oil film and the roller, a 'light' drag may be felt even if it is actually a 'heavy' preloading on the 'guage - in these cases, it is common practice to slide the guage from the side.

Can you stack two blades on top to get measurements between two thicknesses? Thanks

I remember in school two of my instructors did not understand fully whether a big drag from the feeler gauge is right or not. Apparently in the automotive field, its regarded as being "RIGHT on the MONEY" if you have a big drag, probably .002" over maybe thats what i think or .001"

Hmmm, 'big drag' is definitely NOT what we're aiming for. Developing a feel with feeler blades (pun untended) does take a little bit of experience to master and that's why the magazine test is helpful for newbies to understand how much drag they should be aiming for.
@Limeayy
@Limeayy 6 жыл бұрын
well they called it 'slight drag' but the drag they mention and we did it with their supervision was like 'big drag'.

Sometimes 'instructors' get it wrong and this is an instance - in some, rare, instances excessive force may not be a problem as the components are not easily forced apart but in other instances using excessive force will increase the clearance as the guage is inserted. An example of that is valve clearances - the valve spring is applying a specific force holding the valve closed and if the feeler guage applies more force than that as it is forced in, then it will lift the valve off the seat and give a false value. Same thing applies for any other measurement device - both they, and the component(s) being measured will have a degree of compliance (AKA give, flex, etc) and are designed with a specific test force that is to be used. Micrometers are another tool that can be badly abused.
