How to Use a Multimeter to Diagnose Snowmobile/ATV Electrical Problems

Problem with your snowmobile lights? Need to check your voltage regulator? Gauge not working? This video covers the basic functions of a multimeter - including AC and DC Voltage, resistance, current and continuity - to solve a electrical problems on sleds and ATVs.

These things were a mystery to me until I got my ATV and sleds. Since I posted my ATV winch video I've had a couple of requests for a video on how to use the multimeter. I'm not an electrician, but here's what I understand about how to use them in solving electrical issues.

This is a great video! I’ve been intimidated by this tool for years but you just explained it so well. Maybe now I will be able to diagnose any electrical issues with my vintage sleds in the future. Thank you!

A multimeter should be in everyone's toolkit. Even if you only check to see if your battery is charging, or continuity tests on relays, great to have a meter.

Reading AC current on my old Skidoo kind of threw me as I expected to see DC current going to the headlight. So no rectifier circuit on 1997 Skidoo.

Correct i installed a rectifier in my 97 to power an accessory outlet. You could also probably install a regulator regulator from a sled with estart

@@MyOldSled yes...I could see that could be easily accomplished in order to get some DC voltage if necessary. My AC voltage level was OK...but I have burnt out headlight and tail light. So something caused that.
