Almost all drivers today step on the brake pedal before turning on the ignition and cranking the starter. Informative video though on what you can do with a relay. 😃

This is a clever variation on the typical single pole single throw toggle switch hidden somewhere under the dash. May I suggest; however, not using the brake circuit as a potential car thief just might be the one who is in the habit of putting his foot down on the brake pedal before turning the key to start the engine.

I've had a fluke meter for years in fact I have a coupla of them. They measure everything... ohms, capacitance, diodes, volts, amps. You really need to learn at least VDC circuitry to work on vehicles and while you're at it learn a bit about VAC as well that way you can work on house wiring. This is knowledge that will help you throughout life not just when you're young. BTW Fluke (115 model) meters are pricey but they're forever they're an "instrument" not a piece of shit.

Good vid. Back in 2002 I bought an Acura Integra with a bad engine. Once I got another engine in it, I couldn’t figure out why the starter wouldn’t spin. After about a 20 minutes I found a hidden relay under the dash and the control side was connected to the headlight switch. 🔦🏎

Definitely a good idea to notate the kill switch install in the "notes" section at the end of the owner's manual. A thief is not going to look in the manual to see if you wrote that down, but when you sell the car or dispose of it some other way you can just say "Hey, the kill switch info is in the manual notes in case you need it in the future."

Even better would be to put a toggle kill switch on the brake power side that way you need to turn on the toggle switch and hit the brake pedal to start. I too step on the brake pedal to start my truck. This would be a better solution in my opinion. Just a couple more wires to wire up.

It might sound strange, but using the brake switch is not the best option. Personally I'm 99,% stick shift guy. But even the few automatic I drive. They all oblige to press the brake pedal to start the vehicle. With that said several with manual gearbox demand the same! So I can tell you, that the first reaction entering a car. That I intend to start, is pressing the brake and clutch! It's a second nature... I suggest something way more discreet. A button on the dash in plain sight! For the same function. There's tons of aftermarket buttons. With symbols of pretty much anything. From heated seats, to fog lights. Get a momentary switch, of your choice and that will be a "bitch" to locate by a stranger. You can even combine switches/functions, etc. Another interesting option, is a magnetic switch. As the name implies, activated by a magnet! ;-) Cheers

It took me a minute to figure out that you were using the brake pedal ti energize the relay which then "allows" the key signal to get to the starter. I love your solution, that way you can't forget to re-arm the system. I've used a variant of this method for forty years but it is time for me to upgrade to your method

Using the brake pedal is stupid. High beams is a much better idea. But an even better method is the one I described above. That way you don't even need an extra relay just one more thing to break as he's not installing a capacitor across those contacts. Yeah one needs to place a 0.1ufd across those contacts.

Great info very useful, but if your relay is wired to your brakes everytime you use your brakes the relay is activated which is fine nothing will happen but when i drive i constantly use my brakes. so with this setup the relay will be switching on/ off a lot, still not a problem, but that means that the relay will wear out faster( i know relays last a long time) so maybe a diferent power source would be better (so you're not left stranded). I.e. something that is not constantly used all the time. Maybe a switch between both relays? Or get power from glove box light? Anyways Awesome vid love it. Just my two pesos

Good Video, with useful information... Personally I just go under the hood and pull the Fuel Pump or Starter relay from the fuse box and stick it in my pocket. Chances are a thief is not going to be walking around with a relay for your specific vehicle in their pocket. Like the idea about the curious kids. A combo wiring might be good (Foot on the brake with the headlights on) too.

Thanks to your video, I learned how to wire up a relay kill switch. But I decided I'd go one step more-- a two relay immobilizer AND a kill switch for my theft-magnet Accord. I tapped into the clutch safety switch (you have to hold the clutch in for the car to start.) So now I have a hidden kill switch which acts like the clutch safety switch. But the real magic is in the two relays-- they are set up in a circuit so a momentary push button energizes the relays, which then allows the fuel pump to run. When the car is turned off, the circuit opens and the fuel pump won't run. So secret switch one = allows starter to turn over, but secret switch two = allows fuel pump to activate. Hopefully this keeps the thieving bastards from boosting this car.

@Charlie-lx9mg yes, it's considered a safety feature. But now to start my car, you must push in the clutch AND activate the hidden switch, on the same circuit. If the switch is not on, the car acts like you didn't push in the clutch. And then there is the secret fuel pump switch....

My car has a seatbelt dashboard indicator light. I used the switch in the seatbelt socket to control the relay, interrupting the starter circuit. Seatbelt not fastened, starter won't work. That combined with a small normally open pushbutton switch hidden under the left front of the drivers seat makes it hard to figure out for someone else. Got to have the seatbelt fastened, reach under the edge of the seat, push the button and then turn the key.
