I've had a trolley jack and a bottle jack go bad on me, so I now use a scissor jack for DIY. Just to lift, of course, then stands go under car as does the wheel for added cover. Don't really trust hydraulics anymore
@vic8230
@vic8230 2 жыл бұрын
I don't care if you're using a scissor jack or a legit hydraulic floor jack. Never go under a car without stands, that's just dumb. I mean if you HAVE to... I guess a floor jack would be safer than a scissor🤣 but stands should always be used. And I agree with that other guy above me. My trolley jack is junk and barely gets a tire off the ground on my SUV. And I live in an apartment complex so I'm not in the mood rn to grab a good $200 hydraulic jack and lug it up and down stairs when I need it. So I just use the scissor jack, just to lift of course aswell, and then place jack stands.. If I'm changing a tire, doing brakes, suspension work, etc. And throw the tire under there too cause why not.

I am planing to do under car project to change the oil pan. Looking the safest jack to work with. Only found factory scissor jack came up with car. Thanks, I am sure now not to fully depend on this jack. Any recommend what type of jack and jack stand should I use?
@princetchalla2441
@princetchalla2441 Жыл бұрын
@@coolbud356 Be sure the Jack and Jack stands are rated for your vehicle’s weight. Be careful, as some jack stands claim to be able to hold 2 or more tons but the catch is that they provide 2 Jack stands that can only support 1 ton by themselves. Any Jack stand will work, but I usually recommend a Jack stand with the lever mechanism and a second locking mechanism like a pin. The one I use is Strongway from Northern tools, but you can use Jack stands with only one locking mechanism. I wouldn’t, as I’ve heard some from harbor freight have failed and been recalled in the past and that’s why I don’t trust them. Why go cheap when it’s your life on the line? As for the Jack itself, I usually stick with floor jacks, but so long as you’re at home without wind blowing your car around, a bottle Jack can be used to lift. JUST MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS USE A JACK STAND TO TAKE OFF PRESSURE FROM THE VEHICLE’S JACK/LIFT! Every Jack can fail, some are more likely than others. Bottle jacks usually don’t have as much surface for the cars to move around on so they can (and have to a friend of mine) slip off. Regular floor jacks can give out or slip from under the car. Scissor jacks can do the same, but so long as you throw a jack stand with two locking mechanisms under the vehicle and support it with the frame, you can safely be under the vehicle. For an emergency, a scissor Jack will do just fine, so long as you have a Jack stand holding the weight it should be ok, just don’t trust it, work quickly, and try to stay away from any places where the vehicle can crush you. Also, having a friend nearby just to be there in case anything happens is always a good idea. If worst case scenario all else fails, they can jack up the car, get you out, and call 911 to get you help. If they’re willing, they can also help with rags, tools, and other things so you don’t have to keep getting up and down.

Definitely learn how to use a jack and have a spare tire, you'll thank yourself later when your're on the side of the road 100 miles from home. Below is what i carry in my vehicle at all times. 1. Spare Tire (full size or compact spare, your choice) 2. Tire Iron 3.Jack (of course) 4. Tire Air Compressor (plugs into car charger port where you plug your phone in and it turns on and can air up your tire, bought it at walmart for $15) 5. a Can of Fix-A-Flat (Because you may never know) 6. (optional) but you should also have your insurance agent provide you with road side assistance to where you can get a tow truck to your location if you have engine problems, it'll cost you like $5 extra on your monthly insurance bill but it is literally a lifesaver. (Unrelated but ALWAYS carry jumper cables, you also should look up how to jumpstart a cars dead battery on youtube) (Note that if you use a compact spare that you shouldn't drive more than 80-100 miles before taking your full size tire to a shop and having it repaired, spare is only meant for temporary use until you can get another full size tire or get you damaged one repaired.) Hope this helped anyone who was wondering!

My hydraulic jack needs to be serviced and bled or overhauled. I have one of these jacks next to my donut spare, and I did not know how to use it. Thank you, for showing me how to use it! I recently got a flat tire. I could not use the hydraulic jack and did not have the time to figure out the other jack. I, thank God, have an air compressor in the trunk of the car as well. I used that and headed to a Walmart and bought a tire. However, with all the road construction going on in this city, I still needed to know how to use the other jack, in case I got another flat before fixing the hydraulic jack!

Be careful with the "diamond" type of scissor jacks to always leave the car in gear and put a rock on the wheels on the ground, to avoid rocking back/forth as they are unstable when the car is up and can topple over. With the "V" type of car jacks (the silver one in the video), apart from the chucks in front/back of the wheels also be careful to place the support leg slightly below the car than the top edge as these lift and "push" the car slightly towards its center and do not lift straight, like the "diamond" type ones. And the best rule for both types: if they appear to lift crooked, try reseating them and lift again. If they lift crooked again, throw them away as they are bent and the car can fall. Leaving this here, in case someone bothers to read through the comments.

carry a block of wood or jack stand in your car, too, this is only half the equation, and some scissor jacks are flimsy, so don't put any part of your body under the car, and i turn it so the jack is out so you can stay back from the car, not in line with the car, so if the car falls, so what, just jack it up again. people often die under cars, don't go under unless it's on stands that are on flat concrete, and the car wheels are chocked and the ebrake on and a friend is around to call 911 when your arm is pinned and you can't reach your phone so you don't bleed to death.. . etc. you can do it, just don't be too ignorant of gravity or physics or nowadays, electricity. good luck
