Only in making quilt blocks is 1/4" the most common seam allowance. Standard seam allowance for sewing garments is 5/8". I like 1/2" for sewing a lot of other things, like bags. Be sure to read your pattern instructions for the correct seam allowance or your finished project will be the wrong size. I like to remember "P" for perfect when putting in the bobbin.
