This video is about using a Staking tool to close or make smaller the hole in a pocket watch minute or hour hand. Sometimes you may have made the hole too big with the broaching tool or bought replacement hands only to find out the hole is too big. Well you can close that hole with your staking tool with ease.

Useful thanks. I have a crack in the central chronograph seconds hand tube. So when the chronograph is activate and reset, the hand moves 1 tick as it’s not tight enough. I was thinking I’ll need to laser weld the crack first and then use a staking set to either open or close the hole a bit. The alternative is to close the tube without the laser welding but the question would be how long it will last before it it gets loose again. 3rd option is to find a new chronograph central seconds hand but I’m not seeing the same one online to be correct. If you have a link to a online shop that sell a variety of hands, it would be appreciated. Would you agree with the assessment? Thanks in advance.

I would try closing the tube to see how that works. You also may want to check out Martybspace on eBay. He repairs hands and you could send him a message - he could possibly rivet a new hand tube.

Are all the holes in the die plate tapered? I was wondering if I could use or convert this tool to punch/broach neat holes in thin sheet metal. It would be nice if this tool has the ability to punch and broach. (not a clockmaker, wanting to use this tool for other projects if it's possible to convert it)

I don't think you could punch holes with it because I don't believe the stakes are strong enough to punch holes...

Sir. Do you think is it possible to reduce minute hand tube size from 0.9mm to 0.7mm using stacking set? I am trying to find a way to fit larger hand on smaller minute wheel and considering if staking set is able to do it? I appreciate your help

The process I use to tighten a cannon Pinion can possibly be used to reduce the minute hand tube size. Here is my video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adaPjZWhxp7PpWw.html

I'm new to watchmaking and i just also got a C.E Marshall staking set just like that one. currently restoring it as it was so seized up after sitting for 70 years. Has that one served you well? I don't hear about them near as much as K&D and bergeon.

You are blessed! A complete set is really hard to find now. Mine has served me VERY well! I can do anything with them. Remember that you can invert your stakes and use them as stumps too. (You can watch the friction staff video to see how I used it in that way). Enjoy!

does laying the hand face down cause scratches to the polished surface? i think that it must, is there a solution to save the polished surface. I guess a thin piece of material

I have never had that problem, but I am thinking you could use some watch paper in between the part and the die plate if this concerns you. Thanks for watching!

I just purchased a staking tool on Ebay, but I don't know how to use it yet. The book you referenced at the end of your video would be very helpful to me. Could you provide the author and the publisher's names in hopes that I may find one.

Thats insane...would I be correct by saying that the first tapered stake made that hole diameter smaller by pushing material from edge of the hole , towards (taper direction) center of the hole?
@Mikesmeyer88

Yes, just reforming the metal from 1 place to another.
