By looping the tree saver through itself, you're putting ALL the load on ONE line of the tree saver material. If you put your D-ring through BOTH ends of the tree saver, you're distributing the pull so that HALF of the force will go into each end, instead of ALL the force going in ONE end.

For everyone reading the main comment. Chokers like he did actually reduce the capacity around 30-40%. Running basket(described above) actually increases the strap capacity if more than 30 degrees. It can almost double it.

For additional safety, its always good to throw a jacket or that Super ATV bag on top of and in the center of the winch line in case it snaps or something fails so it doesn’t come back at you or bystanders. It loses all it’s inertia and will drop harmlessly to the ground.

When used as shown with the snatch block around the tree and the winch rope coming back to the truck, the pulling force is doubled on the truck but the tension in the pulling rope is half since you have both ends coming back to the truck. So if the winch and cable are rated for 6000 lbs, using a snatch block in this manner will increase the force to 12,000 lbs but the winch line still has only 6,000 lbs of tension, but there are 2 lines at 6,000 lbs X 2= 12,000 lbs..

Not that it’s a huge issue with the weight of that ATV, but if you girth hitch your anchor you do reduce the strength of the strap (up to or around 50%). It’s not something to worry about too much if you’re just pulling for lack of adequate traction, but if there’s the potential to shock load it or there’s suction from mud involved you have the potential to break your tree saver doing that. Same concept as just wrapping the winch rope around tree and clipping it to itself.

I admit that I'm new to winches. I was wondering about the snatchblock doubling the pulling power. Is the cable on a winch capable of handling double the rating as the winch itself? If I have a 3200 pound rated winch and I get into an extreme situation can I safely pull 4000-5000 pounds without compromising the winch rope or cable? Thanks
@seijirou302
@seijirou302 Ай бұрын
The strain on the cable doesn't increase. That setup doubles the force because now 2 cables are pulling each with 3200 lbs, giving 6400 lbs total. If he did another snatch block at the ATV and then back to the tree again it would be 3 cables pulling at 3200 lbs giving 9600 lbs, and so on. The limit is how much rope you have, how many pullies you have, etc. to be able to keep going back and forth. Also the increase in total force comes from a decrease in speed. The winch runs the same speed, but if you just run 1 rope then winching 1 inch needs to move the ATV 1 inch. When you double it back then winching 1 inch moves the ATV 1/2 inch. Triple would be 1/3 inch, etc.

First off you run your shackle bolt then you back it off of half a turn so it don't jam up on you and secondly a snatch block does not double the strength of the winch it actually cuts the load weight in half by splitting it between two points your inches is a 6,000 it's still going to be a 6000 you just cut the weight in half by Distributing to two different points does internet that's pretty good video

I’m installing a 3000 lb winch om my girlfriends 2020 RZR trail. What weight, or how big should my ‘shackle’ be? It just seems like it’s bend the pin under extreme load. @ridermak4111
@ridermak4111 2 жыл бұрын
A shackle is either rated, or it’s not. Letters and numbers will be raised on the side of the bow and the pin will be painted a different color and be slightly bigger diameter than the shackle body. WLL3T (working load limit three ton) is a safety factor of 1/5 (usually) of it’s breaking strength. In this example would be 15 ton. Please don’t buy non rated shackles. If the screw pin and the body are the same color, don’t buy it.

Probably a stupid question, but let’s say the load is cut in half or the winch is twice as strong. Is that to say a 12k winch could move 24k? Again, false information is given here... The installed pulley gives you a change in the direction of pull but by no way a mechanical advantage. If you want a 2:1 advantage the pulley has to move not the cable. With this rig, 1 foot goes in and 1 goes out, so it's 1:1. As for your tree anchor, the webbing should go around the tree with the schackle going in both loops. The way it was set, the webbing is choking itself up to its full cut.

so I wanna throw my 2 cents in here as well, With that set up you're not actually making the winch work any easier, if the pulley was attached to your UTV and the Winch was attached to the tree and you ran the set up, It would because you'd have to forces pulling the machine to the winch, in this case how you have it hooked up you still have only 1 force pulling you and that 1 force is after the pulley, Having it switched to the pulley on UTV would give you 2 forces. You'll have to watch this video to understand. What you're doing is what this guy does in demonstration 1, the way it should be done is demonstration 2, but can't do it without adding additional pulleys or reversing the pulley and winch. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJmCqJSrv9DapZs.html

That's not a safe way to use a tree saver strap! By looping one end inside the other you actually decrease the strength of the tree saver strap because essentially you are using only one end of the strap; thus, turning it into a weak link. It's the choking method and can be dangerous. Just connect the bow shackle on each end of the tree saver strap. You'll maximize the strength from both ends. This was a poor demonstration. Clearly this guy had no clue how to use a snatch block on a tree saver strap. There are plenty of videos on youtube on how to do this correctly.
