In this video I will introduce new astronomers to the basics of using telescopes on an equatorial mount. How to use an Equatorial Mount for Beginners will explain the difference between an equatorial mount and an altazimuth mount and the advantages of each. How to determine the right ascension and declination motions using slow motion control knobs. Without getting too technical, I will describe the equatorial grid, right ascension, declination and how your equatorial mount follows these imaginary lines. I also walk through a simulation of how it would operate out in the field using Stellarium planetarium software.

This is the best explanation of equatorial mounts I've seen. As a brand new astronomer myself, I was finding the equatorial mount on my telescope to be a perplexing puzzle. Thank you for posting this. I'm going to watch your other ones and hopefully I'll have more fun and less frustration.

As a rank beginner, I get frustrated when unfamiliar terms are not explained properly. Yours is the first video I've seen that translates Astronomy into plain English. Thank you!

Michael, you are amazing! Thank you for the very educational video. What an awesome way to explain things so that the new astronomer can understand. Hope you are still in the business of star gazing! Big love, from Seattle!

Hi Michael! Tks so much for this video. I got a 150mm Sky-Watcher on an EQ3 mount for my birthday and I have no idea how to use it. I just have to find out how to align it here in the southern hemisphere now. =]

Julia Santos sorry I just responded now. You could use Sigma Octantis but it is not as close to the south celestial pole as Polaris is to the north. Let me know how you managed to align your scope.

For the south emisphere, there is "Polaris Australis". But it's not as immobile as Polaris, but it is the brightest and nearest star to the south celestial pole. "HIP 71348" is the star that is the most immobile in the south emisphere.

nice video, and NICE to see some manual controls, as most times ruddy computers take control over the whole thing ( wrecks the whole experience), as all you do is look at computer and NOT through the eyepiece like the scope "wants" you to, and as you point out if you don't touch it enough you can't get to grips with how things work and develop that muscle memory.

Can you make a video about motorized equatorial mount? How it knows where the objects are? How it turns in their direction and compensate the Earth's rotation? I have so many questions... Need more videos from you! :)

i have one simple problem. my window faces south and polaris is in the north (btw im in the northern hemosphere). but if i align my telescope on polaris most of the planets are in the other direction.

Sorry I’m only responding now. Polar alignment only makes your mounts RA axis perpendicular to the earths rotation. You can use the declination adjustment to view objects to the south. Hope that helps.

I believe you misunderstood his question. The correct answer was: get outside when doing astronomy. If you have a clear view from your back yard, and not too much light pollution, great. Otherwise, find a good spot in the countryside that offers a clear view all around and as few nearby light sources as possible. Alternatively, if you happen to live in an area with little light pollution, and a flat roof that you can easily access, you could use that. Saves you a drive, and since the scope won't be subjected to vibrations and bumping from the car ride, it reduces time lost on collimating and aligning your finderscope.
