That was an excellent question and an excellent answer. I think if you go from being someone who does zero cardio and you're very sedentary when you cut and you implement a caloric deficit along with list cardio the fat loss is amazing. But doing high intensity cardio you're not going to make it and the fat loss isn't going to be sustainable and/or maintainable. Another thing is if you're walking those steps when you get upwards into the 15,000 plus range unless you're at a job where you're walking the majority of the day or you are have the free time Good luck getting that many steps. But great answer guys Good job

Whilst I totally agree that this conversation is all about BF percentage and the preservation of muscle. I believe it should be noted that literally every medical professional on the planet would recommend 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity cardio each week for health, which is way more important than any of this. Also Cardio like running, playing sports etc is so much more effective than 'functional training, mobility training etc' as it is literally is function. As an example I train hard on leg day, heavy squats with good form etc and get sore, however I recently started playing 5 a side Football (soccer for the US guys) and after my first match, the leg soreness was unreal, as my body had clearly become stiff and immobile and was utilising my body in a way no weight training could. I follow Jonni Shreeve and Gregg and they has this spot on, do Cardio, live longer and better, period! I suppose this conversation is not really about health but purely about burning fat but I would say even if you lose a little muscle the benefits of a good hard Cardio program will outweigh that by miles in overall wellbeing.

Agreed. Tbf this seems like a slightly strange argument, I never hear anybody claiming that cardiovascular exercise is the key to weight loss. All the talk is about energy balance, calories in/calories out. As you say it is true that moderate (zone 2) cardiovascular exercise is one of the best things you can do to extend your life and health span. Especially among men, where cardiovascular disease is such a big killer. Weight lifting is fine, but I think its health benefits long term are being overstated here. There are some studies on bone density that are often cited, but people generally don’t mention those studies are usually on older women who already have significant bone density loss. The idea that lifting weights in your youth will increase your bone density in old age is not well attested and imo not actually even all that logical.

You aint losing muscle and the interference effect is COMPLETELY OVERSTATED! You’d have to be going to extremes and very low calories to be losing muscle and interfering with your lifts. I train concurrently as a female, 2 x cardio + 4 x weigh lifting. To me I use cardio to improve my cardiovascular health but I used to do 3 x weights + 2 x hit + 2 x zone 2 cardio and consistently hit 10k steps everyday. I dailed down now because I put so much stress on my body that the weight just wasnt budging. Only see improvement when I cut back and start focusing on getting strong.

I get that cardio for fat loss should never be the main goal. However it feels that they emphasize that part much more than the actual health benefits. Having a low heart frequency and low blood pressure makes so many activities easier for me as I am more relaxed and sleep better. In my experience "walking" is not enough for any results for that matter. I'm not advocating for HIIT, but some medium intensity Cardio sessions 1-2 a week are doing wonders for me.

Cardio at around a 135 BPM. is the best to do for health benefits and fat burn. This will also increase you vascular system efficiency and size. In addition to helping your muscle to adapt to fat and carbs as a fuel scource buy increasing Mitochondria. I've never seen anyone look into this aspect of cardio and it's benefits for muscle building or cutting when it comes to body building. One good example is Xfit athletes. How are they able to go through intense strength feats while also having amazing endurance when it come to cardio. I wonder if these principles can be applied in a way that will help increase size and definition of muscle.

@319jmp

If you insist on doing cardio: 1. Best to keep it on separate days from resistance training. If you can't do that, separate by at least 4hrs (the more the better). 2. Sprints will be better form of cardio for maintaining muscle mass, than the long durations of SSC. 3. Avoid fasted SSC and HIIT cardio. Have some lean protein beforehand. Fasted NEAT and LISS is ok.

Can/Does slightly more intense cardio help break through a fatloss plateau that's focused primarily on weight training? Been at 255ish for about 4 months but down 35lbs since October '22. I have enjoyed the physique change, the muscle plus strength gains but still have a gut and love handles. Pretty much everything else has gotten lean though: legs, back, arms, chest for sure and some off the gut. I'm starting to look weird. If you dont look at my gut, i look big/bulky. But look at my gut and its like someone has glued pictures of different bodies together lol I have also fallen completely off my better eating habits for a full month without gaining a single pound. Though if since ive been back on, im not losing any fat either. I'm honestly so confused

Cardio definitely hurt my first cut. I reduced calories and focused on walking excessively and my weight loss stalled and my metabolism stalled. I was consuming 700-1000 calories a day and doing alternate day fasting, eating only protein, veggies, and some vitamins and fish oil. I did this for 2months and I tanked. I started increasing calories back to 2000 and had gained so much of it back as fat, destroying all of my progress. I went back down to 1200, then 1400, then 1600, and now I am currently eating back at 2100-2300 calories and weight lifting 3 days a week with some cardio. I’m happily around 15% body fat but my body responds SO much better to eating more on harder work out days but I have metabolic flexibility again. I can have a day or two where I don’t hit my macros except protein and be fine. Finding out my maintenance and weighing and waiting for a week or two was the most frustrating part. Do I increase again? did I increase too much? The process was worth it. Now I do cardio maybe twice a week for 15-30 minutes or a fun HIIT session here or there, but lord, weight training has SAVED my mental health, physique, stamina, and mind frame when it comes to considering this lifestyle for the future. This is sustainable and enjoyable, cardio and crash calorie dieting is not.

Wait a minute. A grown man weighs 167 pounds, is 14% body fat, and we're trying to help him lose even more weight? If he's not competing or very short this is insane. If he ran whatever "anabolic" is (I'm assuming it's based on anabolism and gaining, duh) as many times as he says he has and he still only eats 2500 calories it sounds like he never ate enough calories while doing anabolic programs in the first place. Hence, only weighing 167 pounds.

What about a work out that is doing rounds of running 1/4 to half mile and then doing strength sets? I will do that for about 2 to 3 miles getting in about 6 rounds of 2 exercises (12 sets). Is that working against each other or doing the push ups and squats (and other exercises) each short distance block the endurance signal?
@daisymerollin3730
@daisymerollin3730 Жыл бұрын
No there is no working against each other's benefits, it is just inefficient training as you can't keep up with your best intensity with one or the other (cardio or strength training). Something I do is having a good, 60min max, strength training after some easy cardio if I have to do them both in a few hours, but it's best if you plan to do them with 3-4 hours apart so you can recover from the previous training. Hope it helped you😉
@BigBusiness02
@BigBusiness02 Жыл бұрын
There's no way the sets you're doing are actually strength sets while doing that much running in between. Do you mean hypertrophy sets? Either way. That's a very inefficient way to train. Set your cardio and resistance training apart of you can. And if it's really strength you're focusing on, the intensity should be high enough that you can't do it while running in between, ideally a weight that you can't do for more than 5 or 6 reps at a time. If it's hypertrophy your focused on then the intensity shouldn't be as high
