In this video we will cover everything you need to know about Citalopram, also known as Celexa. This video is part of a video series on mental health problems. So for more mental health related videos check out this playlist:
• Mental Health Problems...
Generic name: Citalopram.
Brand names: Celexa and Cipramil.
Available as a tablet and as a drink.
How to use it?
Swallow the tablet completely with half a glass of water.
When using it as a drink: add some drops in half a glass of water and drink it. DO NOT mix these drops with tea or milk.
Duration of treatment:
Furthermore if citalopram has no effect within 6-12 weeks, it is probably not effective for you. However if it is effective, you should usually keep using it for 6 months to several years.
When to use it?
Citalopram is part of a group of drugs called Specific serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI). It selectively inhibits the serotonin uptake in your brain. Citalopram can be used to treat several mental health conditions:
- Depressive episode.
- Panic disorder.
- Off-label it is often used to treat Anxiety Disorders and bipolar disorder.
What is the correct dosage?
Unfortunately I can’t provide you with guidelines for the correct dosages, as these differ a lot depending on the specific indication, the side effects you experience and the severity of your complaints.
Usually your doctor starts with a low dose and quickly builds it up over a few days. Afterwards your maintenance dose will be adapted throughout your treatment based on the blood levels of Citalopram you will be having.
Therefore always use the prescribed dose and frequency your doctor gave you.
What are the side-effects?
- Very common (10%): nausea, dry mouth, somnolence, insomnia and headache.
- Common (1-10%): weight loss, agitation, nervousness, anxiety, abnormal dreams, difficulty concentrating, tremor, dizziness, tinnitus, yawning, intestine complaints, itching, muscle pain, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction and fatigue.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): weight gain, increased appetite, aggression, hallucinations, slow heart rate, fast heart rate, hives and a rash
Safety:
You should be careful to combine Citalopram with alcohol. As this might increase the dazing effect of this drug.
In addition it is usually safe to drive while using Citalopram, however it can cause you to become drowsy, sleepy and/or dizzy. If you experiencing any of these side effects then please do not drive.
Furthermore, Citalopram can have interactions with several drugs. Therefore always discuss this with your treating physician.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Citalopram can be dangerous in both cases, however there are some exceptions. Therefore always discuss this with your doctor.

The only symptoms I got was decreased appetite, slight nausea and I felt very tired but that only lasted for about a week and the symptoms started to clear up, please don’t be put off by the side effects, I almost stopped taking citalopram after 2 days but I convinced myself to stick to them for atleast a month and honestly that was the best decision of my life, I can actually live my life normally now, my mindsets improved and I’m a lot more organised, my heads a lot more clearer and I feel so much happier, so even if you may feel bad for the next few days, you’re doing this to benefit your future self and you’ll be so grateful that you started them. I know starting new medication can be scary but your doctor wouldn’t of prescribed you them if they thought you’d have a bad reaction, also it’s really important to be patient with the meds, after about two weeks I felt better but I was still getting panic attacks, I only felt the full effects at about 6 weeks, but you might start to feel them at 4 weeks, you’ve got this

've been taking citalopram (10mg) daily for three weeks and I had a huge increase in anxiety after three days. It was so bad I went to hospital. I live in a rural area and my neighbour kindly drove me to hospital at 4.00am on the day. I wanted an injection to calm me and/or advice on how to stop the tablets. They talked to me instead which calmed me down and I dediced to continue. Since then I've had periods of high anxiety for a few hours here and there, the last few days it has worsened again (so from about day 18 to 21), and I sometimes go for a walk as I can't sit still and have considered going to hospital again but haven't yet. My doctor has prescribed me valium and another anti-anxiety medication to get me through. I am so hoping this anxiety surge is temporary, from what I've read 'the anxiety stops after a few weeks' and 'it can take six weeks for my system to fully get used to it' - so all I have to do is wait. Can people reading this, who had anxiety early on when taking citalopram - which later went away - please comment on their experience, and also how long it does take to go. Many thanks.

@howtomedicate
@howtomedicate 3 жыл бұрын

@@heroisdomar4248 While I have plenty of experience using mushrooms/psilocybin recreationally, I feel the need to call you out for blatant disregard of the medical do's and dont's of other people. It's extremely ignorant and even dangerous of you to potentially influence people to try something that might be either out of their comfort zone, or it could just be downright bad for certain people and somebody could end up doing serious psychological/other types of harm to themselves or others if they take that seriously. I'm not even against the use (recreationally or otherwise) of psilocybin but seriously, like, there's a time and place for everything dude and this just isn't the place for you to manipulate people who might not know what they are doing with stuff like that. Or even post a link to a vid of recent studies that can accurately show people the pros and cons of that kind of treatment from a medical professionals standpoint so that instead of somebody jumping off a psychological cliff they can gather enough info to dig deeper into considering it as a safe/regulated treatment option. Take this with a grain of salt because it takes but a few ignorant words out of somebody's mouth that can lead somebody who is just trying to get help into a potentially dangerous situation and it could very well be your fault someday.
