Hi Tom, I started at pt1 and I just finished this one. I'm learning a lot!! These are the very basics of cnc programing/work that I just don't have a solid foundation of yet. Around the 9min mark on this one when you said the .010" D would make the part bigger, I thought I was going to have to comment with a question, but then you explained it a bit more and answered my question! I don't think Mach3 does much with some of these G-codes, but I'm finding the info to be very valuable. Having done a couple of vids myself, I know just how much time/effort it takes to make them and put them up.....so I wanted to say Thank You for making them!!! ...onto pt7 :) Mike

If this is manual programming you should use the exact location of the coordinate without adding the tool diameter to it and enter the diameter of the tool in the geometry offset. Your example is the wear condition on the Mastercam where the geometry is put to zero on D offset and may for novice cause confusion. More appropriate was if you used the control option in the mastercam.

Thanks for this video. Is it possible that we use D1 or D... exactly after tool change? I mean for exp ( T1 D1 M6) and we dont write in line that we use G41 or G42 ????

No it needs to be on your g41 line in order to work!

G41 defined as "cutter comp line left" is confusing. To me it sounds like you're saying that the line is on the left of the cutter as it moves forward. What it really means is that "the cutter is moved to the left of the programmed path." I only mention it because my CNC instructor says the same thing, and I can't remember what G41/ 42 does without using a better definition.

Has the positive value of D always made the finished part bigger? Does this also work if the tool is in the hole ie inside the material? For the positive D the hole will be bigger and for the negative value D the hole will be smaller? i.e. T9 D9 - ( for G41 clockwise and G42 anticlockwise direction - outside material ) if D has positive value then dimension will be bigger about 2*D; if D has negative value for dimension will be smaller about 2*D. T9 D9 - ( for G41 anticlockwise and G42 clockwise direction - inside material ) if D has positive value then hole dimension will be bigger about 2*D; if D has negative value then hole dimension will be smaller about 2*D. Am I right ???

MrAnalyst2010 You are correct! A plus offset makes the machine think the tool is bigger so it compensates for that and leaves material on the part therefore making it bigger on the outside if the part and smaller on the inside of the part. A minus offset makes the machine think the tool is smaller and so the reverse happens. More material taken off on the outside and also the inside. Hope I didn’t confuse you. Thanks for watching!

hi, thanks for posting the vids. This one puzzles me, though. I would expect using G41 would allow to use x0y0, x2y0, x2y-2, x-2y-2 for the actual square and let Mach3 take care of the extra for the cutter diameter on the back ground. But you seem to "increase" all the coords by hand (x2,25y-2,25 and so on). what am I missing?

.YES ,WHY HE USE COMP. 0.25? IF HE USE THE G41 0R G42 IS NOT NECESSARY USE COMP. 0.25

Hey Tom. I understand how to use cutter comp. when approaching a cut from off the piece, but how do you activate cutter comp in the middle of the piece. Here is an example. For school I have a print that requires a .250 inch slot in the middle of a piece. When I cut the slot with no cutter comp. and a .125 inch end mill there is a thin slice of material left in the middle of the slot. I am guessing the use of cutter comp will fix this. My problem is since I can't approach this cut from the outside of the piece how can I make the perpendicular move to activate the cutter comp? I hope that's clear enough. Any help would be appreciated and I very much enjoy your vids.

Eric Hodosh Good question. Ideally you want to do a perpendicular move to activate cutter comp, which is easy to do on the outside of a part. But in tight spaces as long as the cutter comp engaging move is a linear (straight) move, it will work as well. Let me clarify. Start the tool in the middle of the slot and make a .050 straight move right down the middle of the slot before making a perpendicular move up against the wall of the slot. As long as your G41 move is on that line (going right down the middle of the slot) it will engage cutter comp. Do the same to cancel cutter comp. Just move away from the wall slightly and put the G40 on the Z move as you retract your tool. Let me know if that helped you. Thanks Tom

+Tom Stikkelman hey tom. sorry it took so long to respond but yes that worked fine but I won't be doing any milling in the foreseeable future. I got a job where I will be trained on the operation of Swiss style lathes at one of the few shops in the U.S. that specializes in that kind of machine. Very exciting stuff.

Hi tom, from your explanation at the end of the video, the wear value should be negative as the tool wears out. How come your tool data-sheet the wear values were positive? Tool expanding?
