How to use Etsy journals and planners with a Remarkable 2

I have been asked a lot over the last 18 months about using Journals and/or planners with the Remarkable 2. Specifically, ones purchased from Etsy, I always knew that they should have worked fine, and I had made journals I had used myself on the Remarkable 2, but I thought I would find out how well Journals and Planners from Esty worked with the Remarkable 2.
I did some research and found this highly rated journal by SmartTemplatesStudio, who I reached out to and they kindly provided me with this bundle:

And seriously, it is a bundle with so many options, including left-handed options and weeks that start on a Sunday (who starts their week on a Sunday)!
Anyway, whenever you start your week, I am impressed with how well this worked on Remarkable 2. There are loads of other journals and items out there. So if you are looking for a document to meet your needs, in my experience Etsy is a great place to look.

@@kennethjoseph9309 it's a good question 🤔, and maybe if the channel grows in the future. But I hardly use Windows day to day so it would actually be more of a learning curve than what I normally put on the channel. Nice thought though to keep in mind. 👍

Alex - good review. Brand new Remarkable 2 user; id gone to using Moleskine diary and quad notebook but they’re heavy and paper. So a newbie question if I may; what format did you take this download in and how did you get it onto the Remarkable; I read the authors comment and the ‘at your own risk’ part bothered me. I want the best document I can with the best capability I.e. ability to use more pages in the PNG version. Appreciate your thoughts. DJ

Hi DJ, great question and I had the same concerns before doing this myself. So you need a PDF which this and most of these types of planners come in and the RM2 accepts and can use hyperlinks (you can touch parts of the planner to navigate around). To get it on a simply uploaded the file on the app in my Mac but a PC smartphone or tablet app would do the same, I actually think the Remarkable app is very good. I hope that helps and answers your question. I am sure the at your own risk is just a liability thing that is the world we now live in.

Hi @Alex Samuels ! Thank you for this review ! It's very interesting ! Some questions: Is this a vector graphics pdf? If you pinch-to-zoom to enlarge a portion of a page, does the graphics remain clean? If so, can you write comfortably by enlarging the writing area a bit? Thanks in advance for your answers !

Hi, yes if you zoom in it works fine and remains high quality. Regarding writing comfortably, I think it's a personal thing but yes in my experience it all works well in terms of comfort if you haven't seen it this might give you a good idea of what it's like kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hthhdap6vOCoqac.html. Hi Alex, thanks for the nice video. I'm new to the remarkable and I#m just checking out how to use it. For me, syncing with my PC and looking at my notices on the pc is quite important, even to do a backup. Have you had a look at this aspects? THX in advance, Detlef

So I don't connect the Remarkable with the PC directly, one of the best aspects of Remarkable for me is there cloud sync, so personally I access backup and download everything from there. I hope that helps, it works well as a system for me.

Hi, thank you for the video. This was precisely what I needed. This should have been in-built tbh.. I want to buy this but since 2022 is almost over, should I wait for a newer version with 2023 + 2024?

Maybe and it's a good point 👍. However, if you are going to start to use it straight away and it's going to speed up your planning and organising process I would start straight away. Surely, the value that's going to add is more than the cost of buying a new one for 24/25. But, that's just my view I can see the point in saving the money too. @@msalmanazmi So you basically get a choice of PDFs, and you choose the one that best suits you. You then transfer the PDF on to the device, I normally use the Mac app as it's drag and drop but the iPhone or Android apps work fine too. If you can transfer any PDF you can transfer this. The device comes with numerous different templates for example lots of different spacing between lines. However, nothing as elaborate as a full planner which you would need to download separately. I hope that helps 🙏

I am pretty sorry, if I come a bit late into this long conversation. I have been exactly longing for such a device like this. Simply digital note-taker, pdf reader and that's it. Now, since I am just getting to know about this device, would you still recommend it in 2024? Do we expect a better, newer edition of either this or any other e-ink simple to-the-point device? Thanks a lot!

A career in poetry awaits 😂. Yes, 🤔, the pen was a tiny bit laggy, which was odd because it's not normally. Maybe it's because they are like 1,000 pdfs and it's processing 🤷. Well spotted 👍

For writing the RM2 every day of the week, I would say for reading with occasional writing the Kobo Elipsa, but if that is your use case the Kindle Scribe may be a better option. Although it does not get launched for nearly a month. I hope that helps.

the bad thing using PDF templates is, you don‘t can use handwriting conversion - therefore I created my own templates based on notebooks.

Although you have to pay for them there are loads on Etsy. You download them as PDFs then upload them to your remarkable. I hope that helps 👍

@@AlexSamuels Thanks for this, Alex. Another quick question. I've read in some places that when Remarkable updates the OS, you have to re-load this kind of stuff. Is that true or if I purchase and upload it, it remains regardless? Thanks.

@Steve Reynolds great question Steve, not sure what you have read but I have never had to reload anything with any Remarkable update. One of the reasons I like Remarkable so much is I like the reliability of things like the OS including not having to reload documents. 👍

@@ReynoldsGroupRadio In this instance, you're using standalone files that are all self-contained content. They are stored in the user's standard storage area on the device. In the cases you're referring to, people would use non-traditional methods to store custom notebook templates on the "system" storage area. In _those_ cases, yes, a system update would risk overwriting the modifications.

No, sometimes the RM2 is a tiny but slower with very large files. But not really it is very usable 👍😊.

The product does what it says it does... Only a small amount of people would put the value of remarkable 2 at $650 though.

I initially loved the idea of a calendar/todo like that but ultimately it just doesn’t work in the real world. No reminders, no attendees, no ability to easily add timeblocks and toggle them on/off, no easy way of tracking incomplete todos, no deadlines, etc. I’ve moved away from the idea. I find the remarkable is better for journaling, thinking, specific templates (e.g. holiday checklist), stuff like that. Maybe it’s just me.

I think you are right, I need a proper electronic diary; however, I have found that writing out my day in the morning or evening before made me more efficient. It would often stop me from doing things in my electronic plan, but writing it out made me critically question my day. It has also made me think about priorities that weren't in my diary. But that could just be down to my bad planning 😂

@@AlexSamuels Yes, very good point. I created my own little template for that loosely based on The Productivity Planner from the 5 minute journal people and added a bit of a "time log" to track how I'm spending each hour - that is working quite well :)

why don‘t use a #tag to mark pages with open todos? using #tags on those planners is an ultimate tool! Don‘t forget: we‘re talking about replacing traditional planners based on paper, we aren‘t talking about a todo app or calender app etc.
