Could you say more about your experience of using Remarkable as a E-Reader? I own Ipad pro as well, and looking for a device for reading and annotating some documents, so I don't need a device for taking notes, just reading and making some minor annotation

@@Ghostme4L You can edit any client documents, take notes in meetings, hand-edit certain copy, and generally use it for all admin & productivity stuff. It's very useful!

This is my reason for buying one. The multifunctionality of a standard tablet is actually not helpful. This device cuts the distraction and organises my work. That is exactly what I need.

I did feel a bit ick when he mentioned his friend talking about discipline. Some of us are neurodivergent and just want accommodations that suit our brains rather than having to further change ourselves to deal with the already exhausting challenges of life 😅

I checked there website. It’s cheaper than a laptop but less convenient i suppose so that factors into it.

Absolutely. But also nowadays all ipads have the personalised regimes for work/scool, etc. And they are good, you can even have the apps "deleted" in a sense so you don't even see them on the home screen :)

I'm with you. I actually have adult ADD though and am easily distracted. I have two needs for my Remarkable 2. I need to get back to my writing, without distractions, and I carry several notebooks around for several different classes. The Remarkable 2 is slim, clean, and distraction free. It may not be for everyone, but it definitely has its client base.

Why go at battle with all the engineers that design modern devices with the intent of keeping you on them when you can just avoid it

Was just gonna comment something like this. I feel like the point about using the device to do the discipline FOR you is not exactly exclusive to devices like the reMarkable. In fact, I feel it is quite similar to having a "work space" in your home that is free from distractions. In a way, that space does do the "discipline" for you like the reMarkable does. In any case, I don't think it's right to say it does the discipline for you anyway because the very fact that you opt to use it over your laptop or iPad already shows a sort of discipline in itself.

I thought the perspective presented in the video about said issue was quite interesting. I see it more as, I have this issue, so I'm going to buy a device that will serve me in the way I want it to

Can you tell me about your experince with Kindle Scribe? I'm so tempted to get one but I'm leaning towards an iPad now

Try looking into a Supernote (A5X, with the Heart of Metal 2 pen). They do have a A5X 2 queued for 2023Q3 and an A4 queued for 2023Q4. Amazing for distraction free note taking (with titles and keyword file management) and annotation.

This was my reason for purchasing mine as well. I just received mine, and am looking for a good alternative folio to the expensive ones they sell.

Finally a maths person!! I’m getting mine next week and am sooo excited! Interesting point on screen size. On A4 do you have quite spaced out work? Cuz I write quite densely and find A4 quite big, but A5 is too small. How d’you think I’ll find it?

@@fredgoodyer4907 156mm x 208mm is what I measured just now, maybe not what they state on their site, but that's very similar to A5 dimensions of 148.5mm x 210mm.

I thought the "developing discipline" argument was weird. The same argument could be made against using paper notebooks.

Another thing I forgot to mention… their subscription plan is honestly ridiculous.

It got cheaper (2,99€/m). The 3 years of extended warranty is worth it.

@@RCWaldun They changed it back to normal. Everything that was previously paywalled is now free, and they're allegedly going to be putting out new connect features in the fall for a lower subscription price.

I saw the Scribe announcement today as well. I was just about to order a Remarkable 2 for my cousin who is a secretary and now I'm conflicted

@@willaliburd9834 I think to me the scribe will win out purely because it's also a kindle. One of the reason these devices appeal to me is that I'd be able to write notes directly onto digital copies of books/papers. If the scribe allows me to do that onto kindle ebooks directly, then it's hands down the better choice for me and, most likely, many people.

Current version of scribe looks promising. Great if you have a large kindle library. Think of it more as e reader with basic writing tool than a full writing tool. For kindle books you will not be able to write directly on the page. Instead a pop up window will show and you can write/type in it. Basic tools like moving part of your writing with a loop is missing and navigation through you notes will be difficult since you cant jump directly to a particular page. No handwriting recognition so searching for particular note will be difficult. Plus side it has higher pixel density and it is larger screen which means less page turning though I wish it had physical button to turn the page.

@@Belgarathe Yeah I must admit, I'm a little disappointed in the Kindle offering. I was a little excited at first, but having seen some reviews it feels like a very lacklustre attempt by Amazon to enter this kind of market. As you said, it's got so many missing features that I feel are a necessity for it to be a 'writing tool'. And the fact that the handwritten notes within books are essentially post-it notes rather than written on the page is a bit disappointing. I can understand why it needed to be done that way, but at the same time it makes it less smooth to use for many people :/

How has your experience been so far with the iPad? I was looking into e-ink devices that you can write on (I love my Kindle cause it has saved my eyes and doesn't make me nauseus). But I do want to start getting into digital art and degitizing handmade art. I was thinking of purchasing the iPad mini 6 so that I can carry it around easily (I spend 3-4 hours daily on commute and I need it to work when travelling). I've read/watched tons of reviews because I was also condidering the iPad air 5 and honestly I think I'm gonna love the size of the mini. Lots of people have complained that it's far too small to use for something else other than media consumption but I noticed that this is usually men with bigger hands. I feel like it will fit me just fine, what do you think? I don't want to buy something so expensive only for it to turn out useless!

@@katerinap.5662 So, for clarity, I have an ipad air, the latest model because I didn't want a case in which multiple apps became obsolete after just a few years if I got an older one. It was an investment but I was fortunate. I use procreate - a fantastic app which takes a lot of learning, but the more you learn, the more your art and style becomes limitless. There’s a reason it’s highly recommended. I'll answer your question strictly from an art pov, but let me know if you'd like to know my experience from a writing and work pov. So, for digital art- fantastic, pen pressure is awesome. Personally I think there is merit in drawing on a bigger screen- it’s easier to navigate, easier on the eyes, less cramped, and for adjusting the proportions of your paper, you’ll have more useful options on a larger screen than smaller. You’ve made a good point regarding why you’d prefer the mini. I would say go to the store and have a personal feel for both devices with procreate (they usually have it downloaded in store, but you’ll have to purchase it for your device) and decide which you prefer. You can also purchase and try the product for a longer time- ask the store clerk for how long, and if you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund so long as it’s in good condition. Your experience will be the best judge in this case. In short, I don’t regret buying the tablet. It has been extremely useful for other things. R2 has one thing over this tablet, but I’m sure there’s an app out there to fix it. It’s just not that deep of a problem for me.

@@s.o.k2271 Thank you for your thoughtful reply! I was initially considering buying the iPad air 5 as well but it's even more expensive and it's not as portable. But as you said, it might just be better to visit the store and see what it feels like. What about writing and typing on your iPad? I'm thinking that if I get the mini I'm not gonna expect it to replace a laptop, I'd just need it for when I'm out and about + digital art. I'll be using it daily since I come home in the evening and I spend a lot of time on transport so I don't want something heavy. But it would also not be worth it to spend 900 euros on an iPad and stylus that would be too small to use afterall. And that would be for the 64 GB with wifi only. Was thinking of simply adding the iCloud instead of spending extra 200 euros for the extra space.

@@katerinap.5662 If your intention is purely digital art, which seems to be your angle, then why not invest in a device that might be cheaper and provides the same use? I have other uses for my device, but had it solely been digital art, I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives than spending, gosh, £700+ or so not forgetting the pen. My brother is a digital artist but I don't think even he spent so much on his device, but I might be wrong given the price range of devices like his- it's an on screen drawing tablet - not portable at all. But I think this boils down to 2 things: the programme and device. He uses Krita, which is free, but with digital art programmes even like procreate (not free, but still great) there's always going to be a learning curve.

@@katerinap.5662 Before I continue, I would like to say, don't buy something you know you may resent. The high of buying brand items will always come to an end. But at the same time you don't want to make a decision that will leave you covetous, which is why I think you should try it, and you might start to feel less disillusioned by how great it is(or not) when you incorporate it into your day, to see how your digital art aspirations actually look like in reality, when you have to use the device whilst busy. Asking me how my writing and typing experiences are seems to be your way of perhaps justifying the purchase of a device which you truthfully want for just one thing. I think it's fine to make an investment into just one thing, but I also think it's fine to consider other uses albeit don't use those other reasons to supplement your reason why you want this device, because you're not being honest with yourself, at least not to your bank account, but again whose to say you wouldn't need it for other things in future. The reason I say this I don't want you to have purchased this device, not really like it, but then say, "ah well, I could write stories with it or read," when that wasn't really the aim of spending so much. If you have a student discount, use it, then try it at home. See what it's like in reality. Procreate is an eternal purchase, so if you want to use it later, it'll be on your ID, although you can probably return it for your money if you don't like it. Is that okay?
