How to Use Google Photos - Beginner's Guide

Google photo is a photo sharing and storage platform from Google.
You can use it on the web at google.com/photos or you can use the iOS or Android apps for phones and tablets.
There are 4 big benefits of using Google Photo.
1. Frees up space on your Phone
2. Easily moves photos to be accessed on the computer and moves photos from your computer to your phone
3. make sharing photos a lot easier.
4. Organizes your photos automatically by people in the photo, phototype, location, and more.
When using Google Photo, make sure backup and sync are turned on. This will automatically back up photos from your device to google photos and will do the same with future photos and videos.
You can also change the quality of the uploads here. High quality (16 megapixels for photos and 1080 p for videos) is unlimited but the original quality will count against your Google storage limit, which is 15GB for free accounts.
Google photos automatically organize your photos and videos for you based on location, people, and type of photos.

I have probability watched around 1200 how to videos over the years . I'm being 100 percent honest with you about what I'm about to write . Without any question or DOUBT about it whatsoever , You Sir , are the most intelligent , informative, well spoken, easy to understand Person I've ever heard on KZfaq , or many other sights for information . I want to personally thank you for taking the time, ( which I'm sure was very long , not only the making the video, but hours of resherch ) . Your presentation and explanation is excellent . Thank you SO much for taking time to post this. I just got a new 2021 Motorola Gpower with Google photos, and have been reasonably unhappy so far. I really dislike that we cannot get rid of the Print Store in Libraries. But I can at least organize my photos a little better now thanks to you.

A.I is annoying, I don't want Google shuffling all my photos around and organizing it the way it feels is the best and identifying people and places and stuff. I just want to make my own folders and drag and drop stuff.

If that's a problem for you, you'd be better off getting a USB hard drive and copying your photos to that as a backup instead.

I totally agree. Call it, what you will, but It's all about info harvesting formats increasing control. And as of 1/2023, Google holds our photos for ransom .. We have to pay for the app, to have Google release THAT, WHICH IS OURS! Some of the suggested alternatives are worth considering

Agreed. I have three dogs that are the same breed, AI recognizes them as the same, so if I want to view a photo of my deceased dog, I can't sort her from the other photos.

Thank you very helpful, the only question remaining. I don't want to keep everything.. what workflow do you reccomend when filtering out videos/photos you want to trash? first back up and then enter a desktop to filter the trash out?

Well done. A couple questions: 1. if your goal is to primarily upload and share slide shows, can you set things up so only those photos are uploaded (ie: from your mac/pc) ? 2. if you wish to invite someone to access your slide show, do they have to have a Google account? 3. when someone is viewing your slide show, can they manage it in any way (ie: speed). question, if you have icloud photos on and it's 'optimise storage', does that mean google photos won't be able to access many of the photos locally on the phone due to them living on the cloud?

Thanks for all the info. I've been using Google photos for awhile now but I haven't utilized all of the features. Do you have a video that explains how to use the "Utilities" features? I've had this message on my Google Photos app saying "1461 items to delete from this device" but I've been scared to actually do it because it didn't seem to give me the ability to review the items before deleting.

Hello, Great intro ... I was wondering if there is any way to caption individual images in a Google photo album? Also if I want to delete photos from my phone will they disappear from my Google photo album? I currently use iCloud backup , Amazon Prime photo (as I am a prime member and storage is unlimited) as well as Google Photo. Which of these three do you prefer? Is it true that if you delete images from your iPhone they will also be deleted fro your iCloud backup? Thanks.

You explanation is great! I have the app since 2015, 2021 & 2022 I stopped backup on the app on my phone. When I restart the phone app will it give me all the old pictures again? If so how do you easily get rid of duplicates?

I have my Google photos synced, however, I'm trying to free up space on my phone/gallery. When I delete it from my gallery/camera it also deletes it from my Google photos app? Am I missing something here?

I could be wrong, but here's what may be happening to you because it happened to me. I was using the native Gallery app on my Android phone to organize/move my photos into certain albums (which are really just device folders). When I would then open the Google Photos app on my phone, I'd see those groups of folders with the same titles I had given them in the Gallery app. But those are not ALBUMS in the Google Photos app. I then needed to create Albums, but I didn't know this for a while, though. So when I would delete a folder (album) from the phone's Gallery app, I would notice that same-titled folder was now gone from the Photos app. I KNEW I had backed up all my photos but didn't understand where the folder went. Turns out, the photos were still in my Google Photos app, but just in chronological order. When I deleted the device folder "album" from my phone, it also deleted the folder from the Google Photos app but not the photos inside. They were still there, just in chronological order. So, what I should've been doing all along, was using the Google Photos app to create albums and organize my photos. The part that had confused me all along is that my phone's Gallery app calls the folders with the photos "albums" but they are really device folders. Creating an album in the Gallery app does not create an Album in Photos.

All you need to do is , in Google photo app, click on your profile icon, it will start backing up the photos and it will tell you when it's done loading them. Set all Google photo settings to your liking too

How do you share photos or albums to Instagram and KZfaq? When you touched the share icon at around 11:42, your phone shows the Instagram icon. Mine doesn't. It only allows me to share with Facebook and Twitter 😕 Thanks

I just don't understand why you can create albums but also folders and if I move something into a folder or messes up the gallery also it said that a lot of my photos are double saved. Maybe I need to say that I have a Google pixel and this was the only gallery app I have in the first place. Also what does archive mean? I would appreciate someone to explain this to me a lot. Thanks, Im using Android and google photos is my main app. In the application, I can see all my photos as they're synced with google cloud but when I wanna upload some like in Instagram for example, I cannot find the photos I want to share although they exist in photos app.

Hi, I’ve two gmail account on my iPhone and just updated the google photos storage to 200GB. Is this mean the two gmail account can use same storage or I’ve to update the storage for both account separate? Another thing is most are my kids photos and videos. As of June 2021 Google no longer offers total free storage to lower grade photos. All photos now uploaded to Google photos are counted in your 15Gbyte free limit regardless of their resolution or size and will be counted. You can manage photos and have them reduced in quality but they will still be counted in your storage and when you reach 15 Gbyte will need to upgrade and pay for it..

I'm generally pretty tech savvy and been using Google (Android) based devices since 2010. One thing I can't get so far though is the whole syncing and displaying on the Photos Website. I am syncing my current phone (Samsung S20 Ultra) in preparation for my new S22 Ultra since I no longer have use of a memory card. My main thing is that when I pull up the Photos app on my phone, I can see my entire library, including all my custom folders I have in my Samsung Gallery (France Album, London Album, San Francisco, Food, etc.). When I pull up the website though I have Zero Albums and the website prompts me to create my own album. I selected the option to backup all my folders on my gallery (not just my camera), but am yet to see anything on the website. Really hoping since I literally JUST did this today, and my Google Account on my phone says I still have around 17k items to backup, that there is a delay? I also notice that not all my albums on my Photos App on my phone are 100% backed up yet either, so hoping that may be the case and I need to wait longer. Going to be a bit disappointed if I don't have the albums pre-made and sorted on the website version of Photos when logged in to my Gmail account. Wasn't sure if you could advise at all?

I have an important question. I want to have only my photos captured by my smartphone camera displayed in the home feed of google photos or at least in an album. In my One Plus 7 Pro (idk wich android it runs on currentyl but i will edit the commen later) its exactly like that. Screenshots are in the screenshots folder, whatsapp photos etc are in their on folder as well. Now I have a Xiaomi 13T and I don't see an option for this. Is this because of the phone manufacturer or the new Android version or why is it like that ?

I’m pretty sure it’s deleting my photos so basically I gone into the app then went on my profile and say it (saying) (backing up 2 items left) I was confused. Now I have no idea what to do so I don’t wanna lose any photos which I’m scared I will which my photos are a lot to me, if they aren’t deleting I don’t know how to see any of the photos.

Help, my albums in my android phone gallery do not show in google photo app, the pictures only appear in "CAMERA" but not by albums. How can I create an album in my s21 internal memory that will show in google photo app so that it syncs automatically? Help, thanks! I didn't have the issue with my s20 but I used the SD card and google photo app recognized and synched all my albums automatically.

Can you help please? When I delete photo from Google photo on my desktop I get a notification on my phone and then I also delete them on my phone. I thought this would work vice versa but when I deleted a bunch of photos from my photo they didn't not delete from my Google photo on my desktop. I would really rather not have to go through all my photos again and delete unwanted photos. How can I sync them together in both directions sorta say.

Sometimes I take photos of sensitive information, scan documents via the camera, screenshots, etc. that I don't want to back up. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to exclude an album from google photos for auto-backup. So I'm stuck clicking each photo to back up, then when I go to delete them "from this device" it says they aren't backed up, although indeed they are. Is there a way that this can back up photos from messages, notes, etc.? Or a way to exclude an album? I'm thinking I'll delete those photos from my phone, then turn on backup and sync. Then turn it off again and re-save the excluded photos. Anyway, any insight is greatly appreciated!

Get an app to scan documents and in Google photos don't select that folder for backup

If you have Google photos installed you forfeit any and all privacy your phone once had. Download all backed up photos from Google and then uninstal the app. Then take your private photos and never install the app again. Cause as soon as you do, it will access and upload your private photos.
