Confused about how helical inserts work? In this video, Bob talks about how EZ Lok's Helicoil helical inserts work and demonstrates the step-by-step process of how to install them into a block of stainless steel to make or repair your own threading!
Helical inserts are used to reinforce and repair tapped holes in soft metals. If you want to increase the integrity of your application, repair a stripped thread, or are working with soft metals, make sure you’re using helical inserts.

He didn't set the tool stop (which is loosened using an Allen wrench) so that the tang was positioned halfway between the tool slot as the directions say. and he didn't screw the bolt all the way down in because he couldn't because the Helicoil likely jumped some threads and so he has to re-do it.

You simply take a small screwdriver flat blade fit it on the tang and smack it with a hammer, mallet or dead blow hammer it will snap off easily, use air to blow it out of the hole, or a small magnet...

I have a question at 3:33-3:43 please. What size tap do you use for a 1/4-20 helicoil?
@davidsmith7647
@davidsmith7647 5 ай бұрын
Some kits come the tap that matches the helicoil you’re purchasing. And the helicoil itself should be whatever diameter and pitch of the bolt you’re using. I realize this comment is year old now, and I’m sure you’ve found the answer by now. For example, I bought a “fix-a-thread kit for a M6-1.00 bolt. The helicoil is 1/4 52-20 and came with a matching tap. But the helicoil is for a M6-1.00 (6mm diameter - 1.00 thread pitch).

So if you screw up the threads in something you have to tap and die to a bigger size? Then put a helicoil in and go back with the original bolt? If I have a size ten metric bolt what size kit would I need to be able to rethread the same size bolt, as the bolt is special and is designed to hold onto a different nut above it. For lawnmower magneto.

I have a bit of a difficult issue. I have some stripped threads in a door closer and the holes are less than .375". I have to drill them out, then place the coil but the coil is going to be too long already, and that little tab is going to be a problem. Can't insert without it, but it will be in the way once inserted. I need 100% of those threads and can't afford to lose the thickness of that tab. I can't drill the hole deeper because there's a risk of hitting the internal chamber causing a massive oil leak from the closer, and these are very heavy 11' tall doors.

You installed the coil in a fresh thread. How does it work in a striped thread and how do you size that?
@AlbanyCountyFasteners
@AlbanyCountyFasteners 4 жыл бұрын
It's the exact same process, and the new threading should be the same as the old threading (if the old threading was 1/4"-20, the repair kit should be the same). You drill through the messed up tapping by creating a slightly larger hole and then use the included tap in the repair kit to tap your slightly larger hole. The helicoil fills the space that was tapped, slightly shrinking the hole back down to what is was prior to the repair, but with new threading.

@AlbanyCountyFasteners
@AlbanyCountyFasteners 15 күн бұрын
If you've stripped a 1/4-20 thread, you can still use a 1/4-20 Helicoil to repair it. No need to go smaller. Here's the process: Use a 17/64" drill bit to clean out the damaged threads Tap with a 1/4-20 STI TAP (MAKE SURE IT IS AN STI BOTTOMING TAP) Install the 1/4-20 Helicoil This brings you back to a 1/4-20 thread. Always double-check your kit instructions for exact sizes. Got more questions? Fire away.

He’s just demonstrating how a helicoil works. Typically the hole is already there and the bolt has stripped out the threads like a spark plug hole for instance. The helicoil allows you to use the same diameter bolt.
@ObscureGarage.
@ObscureGarage. 4 жыл бұрын
In my situation the bolt runs through a center of a pully which then runs through a spacer that holds a tension bracket on my block. The fitment in the inside of that spacer is exactly the diameter of the bolt. If I go up a size it won’t work. So I’m drilling, tapping, and inserting a m8x1.25 helicoil.

its not a standard tap where a normal bolt could thread into it. Its labeled on the tap as an STI tap (special thread insert) made specifically work with the coil. This is used for when you don't have room to tap to the next bigger bolt size but instead need to use the same bolt.

When you turn the little tool down to insert it the thing falls off! And the little too isn't long enough to reach it and turn it let alone snapped off a tang using a hammer? Why not just use a hammer on the whole engine?

What is the solid, smooth metal tool for that comes with it, is it the punch that's meant to be used to break off the tang after it's inserted? Did you use a tool improperly? Also, a personal commentary about production quality, sorry if it offends, but the slurping and drooling sounds that you make are just gross and very off putting.
