A great, clear KZfaq video. Should be a model for KZfaqrs. No silly chatter, no sound effects, no overly loud "background" music, no frantic, distracting, self-conscious gestures. Just good clear straightforward explanations with reasons. TYSM!

I'm here having seen an old kodak instamatic camera for sale locally quite cheap, having watched the process and having to finish putting the film into the slide in a dark room, it seems a bit of a faff when I could just go and buy an instax mini camera for a little more....😁🤔😳 I suppose if you have the kodak camera already, it's a good workable solution to get it working again. But to go out and buy one just for all the faff of loading it, I'll pass on that! 😁👍 Great video though!

Thank you for this video! I just got the same model you have and wanted to try the video of photochemicals, but found your video after I ordered some film so I'm using yours. Also I think the reason photochemicals worked without the support strips is because he used a cheaper manual eject, which probably helps with the amount of pressure on the film compared to the automatic you have.

You should still be able to use Polaroids film in the Kodak camera, if you can make it work. Polaroids film being exposed from the other side doesn’t matter, and they both work by having a chemical pod which is broken and spread across the emulsion.
@raze3297
@raze3297 Жыл бұрын
Polaroids exposing from the other side DOES matter though. The images will be reversed. Of course you can just un-reverse them after scanning if the original photos aren't a high priority. Also, Polaroids are too long to fit into the Kodak cartridges and the excess film will bump into the rollers. You *might* be able to finagle one in but you risk prematurely rupturing the chemical pods or damaging the emulsion in the process. Not to mention the larger image area of Polaroids so about a centimeter is going to be cut off vertically on every exposure.

Excellent tutorial, this is great news for all those Kodak fans. I always regret these cool looking cameras was not usable any more. The big question is, to you need to load the film in a darkroom?
@stopmo6845
@stopmo6845 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, you do need to load the film in pitch black, which I just do in my bathroom with the lights off. I intentionally made the Kodak-Instax slides have distinct features that allowed me to feel which side to put the film in as well as what orientation the slide is in. Regretfully I didn't really go into detail on how to load the film, but I do quickly show how at 4:50 in the video.

Very interesting and so complicated. Probably I was inattentive, but about the difference between ISO Kodak Instant film and Fuji Instax?
@stopmo6845
@stopmo6845 2 жыл бұрын
I think the original Kodak film was 100 ISO, so the exposure time that Kodak instant cameras have is sometimes too long for the 800 ISO Instax film. However, most Kodak cameras have a brighten and darken setting. I generally shoot everything with the camera set to fully darken the image, which usually works for getting proper exposure. If it's still overexposed, I shoot with the flash activated but covered by my hand to force the camera to shoot at a high shutter speed. It requires a bit of experimenting, but proper exposure is possible

This is really fascinating! A few years ago I tried this with my polaroid 1000 camera using a method similar to photochemicals's. I kept getting results like one of your earlier attempts: with uneven chemical spread in a stripe pattern, the chemical pouch sometimes burst also. You mentioned that polaroid has a different method for developing the photos: would this mean that Instax film wouldn't work in a polaroid camera even with these adaptions? or do you think the side strips could help? Thanks!
@stopmo6845
@stopmo6845 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine the side strips would help, but I would be cautious since old Polaroid film was made thinner than modern Instax film. The added thickness of the strips puts extra strain on the gears since they were designed for a thinner film, meaning they might be damaged with the strips added to the slide. That said I have had a chance to compare Polaroid cameras to Kodak instant cameras since making the video and I see no fundamental difference in how they spread the chemicals, with both using nothing but rollers. Because of this, I don't see why my design wouldn't work. I'd recommend doing some of your own tests to see what strip thickness works best for the Polaroid 1000 camera, starting with just one layer of cardstock and working up from there. Give it a shot if you think it's worth the risk!

I’ve run instax film through my Polaroid camera many times, it breaks the pod and spreads the chemicals pretty much perfectly most the time, sometimes doesn’t make it spread all the way every now and then.

Maybe you did mention it and I missed it, but how have you figured out how many of these sheets with Instax film you can put in a single cartridge at once? I imagine it might not take all ten shots like the packs originally do. If you did figure out what it takes at max, is there any difference for the Square sheets?
@stopmo6845
@stopmo6845 2 жыл бұрын
Because of the increased thickness of each slide compared to the original Kodak film, 10 slides will not fit in the cartridge. I think the most I got in at once was 8. However, I also learned from experimentation that the more slides there are in a cartridge the higher the chance is that multiple slides will be ejected at the same time, which would likely ruin multiple shots. Because of this, I don't recommend using multiple slides of this design in a cartridge just because of how unreliable it is. I think my film slide design would need to be completely revamped in order to make loading more than one into a cartridge viable. As far as I can tell, there should be no difference between the Instax mini slide and the Instax square slide in terms of how many you can fit in a cartridge.

I really appreciate this video. I am afraid when I put the film in the holder invthe dark, that i would push on the chemical packet and break it or push on the photo part and damage it before exposure, has this happened to you or is it not necessary to worry to much? Also if you remove the dark slide from the cartridge in the dark room and you take out 1 or 2 of the films out and you put back the dark slide, do you think the cartridge if safe from exposure?
@stopmo6845
@stopmo6845 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience, pressing on the exposure area will not damage the film. As for the chemical packets, they are robust enough to *gently* press on (which is something you have to do in the dark to make sure you are putting the frame into the holder properly) without the chemicals getting ejected from the packet. As long as you're fairly gentle with handling the frames, there's nothing to worry about. The Instax cartridges have a thin piece of black plastic over the slot where the film exits to prevent light leaks. Unfortunately it also acts as a one way gate for the film. The only way I've been able to reinsert the film or the dark slide was by removing this plastic piece, which puts the film at risk of being exposed even with the dark slide present. I personally store my open Instax cartridges face down inside a lunchbox.

Sometimes when I take a picture I see the outlines of something trying to come thorough but I can never make anything out. Any Ideas as to what's going wrong?
@stopmo6845
@stopmo6845 2 жыл бұрын
It's most likely a fault in the camera. Since these cameras were designed for a much lower iso film, your particular camera may be dramatically overexposing the image. If the camera has an exposure compensation setting, I'd turn that down all the way to the darkest setting possible. It's also possible that your camera's shutter or some other component is somehow broken. The best advice I can give is to re-inspect the camera to see if there's any damage and make sure it's in perfect working order. I'd also recommend taking a shot in complete darkness, which in theory would result in a black image. If it still comes out white, that would mean at some point between loading the camera and taking the picture light had the opportunity to expose the film.

@stopmo6845
@stopmo6845 2 жыл бұрын
The individual Instax frames are light sensitive at all times until a photo is taken with them. Only after the chemicals spread across the face of the frame is it safe to expose it to light. If you expose the frame to light before taking a photo with them, then when you do take a photo and give it time to develop it will come out completely white.
