The tile has set and we can begin grouting!
We'll use a black grout, along with black silicone, to match the fixtures in the bathroom.
Enjoy!

Thanks so much for making this video and figuring out that the mixing speed is the primary issue! I've seen so much misinformation floating around about this grout, and once you mix it at less than 300 rpm it's a piece of cake to work with! I've used it three times now since watching your video and all three times after applying it to the whole wall I've had to wait a good 10 to 20 minutes for it to set up before I can start wiping! It's not a stressful speedrun, it's downright relaxing! The aeration hypothesis makes so much sense. Really appreciate it, man. Keep it up

Hey thanks for watching and appreciating the video! I’m certainly always learning as well and am always trying to use the best method for the project at hand.. sometimes within restraints that are beyond my control, but that’s where creativity come in!

I just stumbled by. I love to tile but I'm just a DIY. This is the grout I used first and I got so terrified of stuff I found on KZfaq about it drying super fast. I actually called the technical number and they said just hand mix. It do not use machinery. Apparently that's the only trick. That said, I'm spoiled now. I used a different grout on the shower floor I did and it was a slower drying one and I hated it. 😂 Thanks for putting the stuff out there, you do good work and it must feel great to help other people achieve success. Success. Anyway, I should probably get back to work on my projects and stop stalling by leaving comments on your old KZfaq videos.

Thanks Zack!... still getting up the nerve to start with this product. Don't sweat it over the slivers....99 percent of people don't notice....your next job won't have slivers.....I swear if I didn't worry about slivers my bathroom would have been done 9 months ago... I still ended up with 1.....I appreciate your video.

Hey Damian! Thanks for the comment. Ya there’s a few other factors as to why there are the slivers. Regardless, it’s watertight. Glad you’ve been enjoying the videos! Hopefully a new batch will be coming soon

I used the tape caulk method. It works well. There were a few places where I had "thicker" edges on the caulking. I used blue tape. I think that you need to wipe the caulk thin onto the tape. The caulk edge will be the thickness of the tape. But at least you have straight lines and it looks neat.

Thanks for pointing that out! Ya, it is a method recommended by Mapei, it’s not as easy, as you mentioned. I think free handing it is the best method but also needs practice

Great video thank you. I’d been staring at my bags of grout and silicone … nervous because of some of the videos on here about it. After yours I went and did it and am happy how it turned out. Thank you again. For caulking, I’ve been watching CharlieDIY so will be trying to avoid using tape

Hey Frank, thanks for the feedback! Glad your project turned out, it can be intimidating for sure. I'm unfamiliar with CharlieDIY, but i could think of a few reasons why tape wouldn't be the best method. I think ideally you free hand it, no tooling, no soap/water tricks. Mapesil T does say you can use the tape method, but you can mess that up pretty quickly too. ... and the also say you can tool it with soapy water ;p but best thing to do is do the research and do with what you feel comfortable and confident in doing after that Thanks for checking out my videos!

@@dmorrone111 for what it’s worth, I’ve since done two tile jobs around the house with FA (one white, one colored) and both turned out quite satisfactory. I mixed both with a drill (lower speed) and had no issues.

From Mapei tech data sheet: 2023-11-14 Mix thoroughly with a low-speed mixer (at about 350 rpm) for about 4 to 5 minutes, or until obtaining a smooth, creamy, homogenous paste consistency and a uniform shading of the colored grout.

Nice work, thanks for the video. How long of a working time did you have with what you mixed in the bucket? Did you mix a new batch for each wall?
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted Жыл бұрын
Good question! The first batch I did just enough for side wall, then I did the other two walls with the same batch I think, can’t quite remember, but I think you have at least 30min working time, there are other grouts that have closer to an hour working time that I’d recommended if it’s your first time, as when this stuff starts to dry it turns messy real quick

did you grout the corners and silicone over them? or just leave them empty and use only the silicone?
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted Жыл бұрын
Good question! Typically I like leaving an 1/8” gap and siliconing it. You could add grout, it most likely would serve as backer for the silicone as grouting that corner will always develop a fracture crack

I will never use Mapei again!!! I’m in tiling business since 2006 , and my latest tiling job was 300 sq/ft. I was using Mapei Ultracolor plus FA one bag of 25lbs and one 10lbs bag for the job Color was 04 Bahama Beige on both bags, when the job was finished color was different from bag of 25 lbs was lighter than bag of 10lbs. Common reaction from Mapei is about how much water did I use And that is just big BS , there is no difference when you use little bit more or less water I made video about it and show it to Mapei people, I’m done with Mapei for good

Good catch ;) Yea, I’d agree that it isn’t ideal to have a small piece like that. Unfortunately I was a bit limited as it was an old rough opening, so to allow my tile to come out beyond the edge of the tub and down to the floor, I was left with that small piece on the inside corner. I’d rather do it that way for waters sake, then to have let my tile stop right at the edge and inevitably get water damage to my drywall and baseboard

First off. BEGINNERS DO NOT USE THE FAST SETTING GROUT!!!! You well regret it. Second using tape for caulking creates an edge. Dirt and gunk well accumulate in the future.If your not comfortable just using your finger than use this method and then go over it with a wet windex finger to smooth the edges.The tricky part when doing this is to do it before it begins to set up. This requires doing short sections as zack has shown. Nice vid.

dude.....those corner slivers
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted 2 жыл бұрын
ya, not the greatest, i admit. I wanted to stay true to the half over lap, and because of the plumbing wall being original, and wanting to go to the edge of the corner, I was left with a smaller piece in the corners. I put it there, rather then where the aluminum tile edging is, because i think it looks better, makes it appear that the tile wraps the corner unto the back wall

@@zackcrafted In that situation start in the center of the tub at 25% of your tile, you would have eliminated the sliver and had equal alternating cuts on both sides. You're one of the few guys I've seen mix that Ultra Color like it should be.

could the slivers of tiles at the corners been avoided with preplanning?
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Unfortunately this was a rough in tub, meaning we left the walls. I prefer having my tile run down the vertical sides of the tub to the floor, as that always sees moisture. With the half tile over lap this left me with the slivers in the inside corner. It was either that or having them on the front edge, which I didn’t like as much. I know it’s not cosmetically ideal, but it’s just the way it panned out
