I received similar training during military service in order to be able to focus when the shit hit the fan. Ever since, I have preferred to drive without music on.

I thought the point of meditation was to get away from the automatic internal bullshit. If I just sit and think about whatever, my mind has the uncanny ability to manoeuver into a ruminative hellscape. I use intentional somatic focus to distract myself from my internal world. That way my mind doesn't have a chance to drift into a shit storm. I can sit and think for ages, but I get more than enough of my internal world, I'm sick of it. It is NOT a friend to me
