A huge tip I can add is to emulsify the neem in a smaller container with just the soap and a little water. It makes a huge difference in the mixing and applying it with a sprayer. Does a great job of keeping the neem from sticking to the side of the sprayer.

You might wonder but we people from India have been using Neem since ages. Soaps, face wash, shampoo, toothpaste, you name it. Neem is antibacterial, antimalarial and antifungal. Another plant that every Hindu household has is "Basil". Basil is anti microbial too. Basil is also used in almost all body products. We have a saying "If you keep eating neem it will turn sweeter". Which means if you concentrate on a same task everyday it will bring fruitful results. Also, people use small neem branches as toothbrush

All the doctors in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada, are going to Chinese doctors, I would like a doctor from the east to be honest. You know the medical system has broken down when all the doctors in the capital of New Brunswick are going to a Chinese doctor. There's something seriously wrong with our medical profession and imagine Canada pays for it all, but is not technically doctor recommended!

I think the best way to use neem is not just as a foiler spray but as a root drench. Neem is readily absorbed through the roots of plants and can go systemic.

Very informative thank you! Just as an FYI so you don't kill any beneficial insects like bees, butterflies, ladybugs etc - spray the neem oil solution at sunrise or sunset, when those bugs are less active. Otherwise you might hurt the good bugs that are not hurting your plants at all.

During high school, we have a lot of Neem Tree planted at the back lot of our school. During experimental research subjects we always use neem leaves as subject. We were able to extract oils, create neem candles, and incense usually as insecticide or pesticide. The tree also looks great on the landscape. We take our lunch under these trees.

If you can't afford Neem oil (which is expensive), try using 3x tsp of baking soda (bicarb of soda), 1 tsp of vegetable oil, 2x tsp very mild handwash (baby soap for e.g.) 500mil of warm water (1tr for weaker solution). This is a powerful fungicide ( powdery milde and insecticide ). I have been using this mix for well over 50 years and if applied correctly works well. Just make sure to spray under leaf too. 👌

Thanks for the information. I used neem oil this summer - on cucumber and squash/pumpkin plants (got information from various KZfaq videos - that was not as concise and rational as what you brought forward) - and it didn't do what I wanted and seemed to harm the plants as much as help. I now realize my formula was too strong and I was using it too often. I look forward to better results next summer. I appreciate your measured and flexible outlook on gardening.

I think if people do have concerns about neem affecting larval forms of beneficials or important pollinators, if they have the space they could designate like a small plot that's fully planted for pollinators and beneficials and designate that for zero spray. And manually move any larva on their spray plants over to their no-spray area.

Super informative as usual. For some reason though, I was also under the impression that you could use a neem oil / soap / water solution (in more or less the same quantities you’ve listed) as a soil drench if you had certain nasties such as fungus gnat larvae. I wouldn’t use it this way in the garden though because of its widespread effect, but just on indoor houseplants that are in pots.

I occasionally do a soil drench on my orchids for fungus gnats, it works very well on keeping them under control.

If I may offer a suggestion: If someone doesn't have ounce measuring devices, the quantities can be converted to spoon measurements. I.E., 6.5 oz of neem is 12.5 tbsp

Some bottles of pesticide are like add one microunit to every third astral gallon only when the temperature is at 75 celcius at sea level. Lol With me standing there with my measuring spoon set....

As much as I’m a garden pacifist generally, harlequin bugs and flea beetles make me want to break out the big guns, but, as you said, the beneficials make me less resolute.

I had the same concerns in the garden this season when I brought Flea Beatles and Thrips in from a local greenhouses eggplants. Spraying Neem 2 evenings in a row knocked them out and didn’t seem to affect the Ladybugs or Green-lacewings. Anecdotal of course

My first year gardening, I had a ton of cabbage worms and read that you can use neem oil. I hadn’t tested the strength of my ratio oil to water on a leaf first and I accidentally killed all of my kohlrabi… my first lesson in pest control.

Lost my whole planting of cantaloupe because of mildew. Didn't know what to do. As I'm new with the gardening aspect. Will definitely get neem oil for my next planting
