All right, so hi everybody. Welcome to my channel Off the Beat. My name's Fabian and I hope you stick around because today we're going to be talking about OTT compression.
What does OTT do? How to use OTT in your own tracks? We're going to cover it a little bit in-depth but I am going to make it easy for you beginners as so you can wrap your head around compression, Multiband, and just OTT in general.
In this OTT tutorial, I show you how to use OTT, specifically Ableton OTT but the same rules also apply to Xfer OTT if that's what you have.

In this chapter I talk about exactly how compression works, the threshold, and ratio settings. This is crucial to understand how to use OTT.

this is not how compressors work. compressors work like a robot that turns the volume knob automatically for you, this means that the whole signal gets turned down, and not what just above the threshold. once the signal goes above the threshold that is when the robot looks at what is the amount of ratio you wanted, delays itself for the duration of the attack time, then it reduces the volume of the signal for the duration of the release time. that is why sometimes you can have too much compression.

Hey Rusin Brusin thanks for the comment. I could be wrong but I'm 99.99999999% sure that a compressor will only turn down the signal that is above the threshold. A compressor is designed to reduce the dynamic range of a signal. Either make the quieter parts louder, or the loud parts quieter. This allows a clip that has loud transients to have those loud transients lowered in volume while not effecting the volume of the quieter parts, giving a more consistent signal. It's a crucial step to keep the track consistent in volume and allow the master track limiter to not be pushed too hard or distort.

How do you install the OTT into Ableton? I downloaded OTT xfer and cannot find out how to open/add the program to Ableton.

OTT is kinda funny, it is technically a cheat to make most music sound “good” but I still wouldn’t recommend people who are just starting to make music to use it since I think what makes it so powerful should be learned so you can tweak it even better. Not all sounds go with OTT and for that I think people should whip out a clean slate multiband compressor (preferably with more than 3 points) And experiment with it

Thanks Andre! I probably wouldn't use it on the master itself as it can destroy certain frequencies. Instead you could put in on a return track and send it to whatever tracks or groups you like 😊

Great video. Why do the bands on the first multiband compressor you showed overlap? Also, if OTT is compressing all three bands, why does it sound different from a standard compressor? And why is it called "over the top"? Also, why does OTT bring out so many harmonics?

You can change where the band's start and end if you don't want any overlap. You can also change to a steeper cut to help with less overlap. The reason a multi and compressor sounds different is because of the upwards compression. Abletons normal compressor uses downwards compression where the multi and uses upwards. This turns everything up that's below the threshold. I like using this to help emphasize the quiet harmonics in a sound without losing any dynamics that come from normal compression.
