Here's what I could gather about compressors in the shortest format possible. Absolutely essential for mixing in most situations, it is also incredibly useful for sound design.
It can reveal the grit and texture hidden in any sound as well as tame the harsher frequencies.
This video is my attempt at making a comprehensible overview of this multi-faceted effect.
TIMESTAMPS:

0:44 How a compressor works
5:40 Parallel compression

7:41 Multiband compression
8:10 OTT
10:46 Sidechain compression
13:16 De-esser
14:11 Limiter

And suddenly it all makes sense. Not only is this the best explanation I've ever encountered but you also tell us exactly how to use this. Only someone who 1. has a vast amount of knowledge and experience and 2. can put himself in the position of a beginner is capable of delivering all that is to be known in a nutshell like this. Hats off!

The visuals in this video really help with understanding how the compressor works. Like most of the comments I've watched a ton of compression videos and didn't really grasp the full detail at the end. This finally makes it so much more clear. Thank you! 🏆

Its really cool you bring up the amount knob. One of my uni courses was avonguard music and I used that trick to phase one of my tracks but also showed it didnt actually work with any other plugin. After doing a lot of digging and experimenting I came to the answer that amount doesnt have a bypass trigger coded in like dry and wet does if at 0 (to save on cpu usage). It acts more like say a good analog vst or copies. Even if the plugin isnt doing anything it will still send the sound through its wiring which still edits the sound. (ott doesnt actually edit the sound though so I believe because its a popular effect they brought it over from older versions that didnt have the dry/wet modern programming. And either they couldnt get the new code to work or forgot there was even a difference.). All I can say is this is a very unknown property. None of my uni prof knew about it including the 'bold guy' who does Ableton tutorials sometimes and an ex abby road enginner. So probs on you for also discovering it. Never thought I'd see it in a youtube tutorial. shows you've really messed around with everything and know your stuff

i wanted to add a note to the last thing you said about OTT, you said "even when the amount is on 0, it will have an effect. i think it has to do with how the bands are separated" thats actually correct, OTT's bands are not in phase with each other, this causes the crossovers to phase with eachother creating artifacts

Great video. However lots of ppl get it wrong. The RELEASE is not related to the signal dropping below d treshold, but related to the gain reduction... so most of the time the release is taking plce above the threshold...

Stacking several OTT's in series will cause frequency dispersion due to the crossover points. This goes for every multiband plugin really. You can achieve the same effect with EQ3 as well

@1:35 Does ableton change the wave form in real time when you adjust the attack/release? I'm a very visual learner so having this visual reference would solidify a lot of compression questions for me. Thanks.
@Woochia
@Woochia Жыл бұрын
No, the waveform is an animation I made for the video. But the compressor has 3 types of display. There's one where you see better how and when it compresses the sound
@ByronEllerbeck

Amazing video, thank you! I'm just curious about one thing - why set release time to one 1/4 note specifically? How did you know this would sync it to your tempo?
@Woochia
@Woochia 11 ай бұрын
The length of a 1/4 note is 1 beat. That's why that's the first one I calculate, so I have a note on ever beat (this is naturally bound to the tempo, that's why the tempo is in the equation). From there is can divide or multiply the value I find by 2 if I need a shorter or a longer time, that will still be synced to the tempo.

How to avoid that click made by sidechain? In older versions (8 i think)of ableton there was an option to eliminate that click
@Woochia
@Woochia 10 ай бұрын
You can make the attack longer to reduce the click, but I usually don't bother a lot with as there would be a kick or a snare playing at the same time, so it would be drown in another transient

Sibilance is the Serpent of high end frequency It isn't arbitrary that we call them symbols then call them cymbals. The serpent represents high end frequency because it hisses like the white noise from old TV sets which is the sound of the leftover radiation after the Big Bang.

Using the 'mix' knob on a compressor like Ableton's will achieve the same effect as parallel compression, right?
@Woochia
@Woochia Жыл бұрын
From what I understand, yes. The advantage to put the compressor in a parallel chain would be if we put other effects in that chain.
