Thank you for clarifying how to read a ruler. I am a new sewer/quilter. Every bit helps a lot. Especially when you are the only one in the entire family who has a sewing machine. Thank you again, please keep up the good work. I look forward to more great tutorials.

I think for the newbies, it should be clarified that the "Diagonal Line" on the Square rule IS in fact a 45° line just like that on the rectangular rule. The term Diagonal is not limited to the 45° angle as the 30°,60° or any degree of inclination between 0 and 90°s is a Diagonal Line, so you newbies be sure to use diaganol to mean any line on the bias but be sure to specify the numbered degree of the angle. These same degree lines may be found on cutting mats too, but be sure your rules match the lines on the mat EXACTLY or you will wind up with problems like a piece may measure 3 1/4" on the rule you cut with but may measure 3 1/8" or 3/16" on your mats scale. It's best to make ALL your LAYOUT MARKS using only one rule so all your parts are correct to each other. I'm a machinist and every measuring device we use has to match a shops master scale or it can't be used in the shop. We call this "calibration". It's an extra step or two, but your work will benefit immensely!

The question I have is: when I’m cutting, do I show the line or line up the line on the edge of the fabric. Hope this makes sense!

Great Tutorials for both new and old quilters. Any chance you'll ever do a tutorial on the O'Lipfa Olipfa Olfa 45 Degree Clear Mini Ruler?? I was given one and haven't been able to find anything on this particular ruler.

Thank you so much! I am new to quilting, and sewing as well and I have such a hard time getting cuts correctly. I actually just finished my first quilt. Well, I still have to hand sew my border onto the back. Triangles are especially hard as one side always ends up larger than the other. If you should read this could you help me with this issue? Thanks again for this tutorial!

Hi, Yes, triangles can be one of the most difficult shapes to cut when piecing a quilt. Using a ruler that has a non-slip backing can help a lot. This will make sure that once you get your ruler lined up where it needs to be, it is much less likely to move at all when you are cutting. If you are cutting two triangles from a square, ensure that you are lining up that ruler directly from corner to corner- even draw a line first if that makes it easier to see. If you are cutting out a series of triangles, it can be easier to do this starting with a strip and rotating your ruler back and forth to get the triangles. Here is a great article that demonstrates that technique and also gives more tips for working with triangles: weallsew.com/quilting-equilateral-triangles-part-1-cutting/ Cheers, Ashley
