I put this on my garage and 15 years later it still looks like the day i did the job. I drove on it, my renters parked on it. When I sold the home all I had to do was wash it out with some detergent an water. It looked great!! I put the chips on top of the wet paint. I let it dry a few days then applied the rust-oleum clear epoxy. The floor was bullet proof. I am getting ready to do my garage in my new home. Cannot wait to see the great results. I highly recommend their product.

This is a really nice kit, it gets a bad rap and I'm sure it is because people don't prepare the floor properly. We applied 1 2.5 garage kit this past spring (2019) and absolutely loved the results. The most important thing is NOT skipping or half assing any of the steps. We really pressure washed our floor, cleaned it heavily, filled the cracks etc. and the results speak for themselves. We made a few mistakes but the kit is pretty forgiving. We also added the clear coat afterwards. IMO the clear coat is an absolute MUST, the finish it gives and the results with the clear are just so much better than just a raw finish. However the clear coat only makes up 1 gallon and that barely covered our 2 car garage. The kit in the video was much more than enough to do the garage floor with plenty left over.

@tomhusar4882

Good video guys. Many manufacturers recommend using a primer before applying the epoxy so I wonder if you agree? Also, many DIY videos on this topic strongly recommend a second coat. If I do that how long should I wait before applying? Sorry, one more: Does the clear coating also serve to help seal the flakes to the surface. Thanks!
@RustOleumCDN
@RustOleumCDN 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, great questions! Our Epoxyshield Garage Floor Kit is meant for bare concrete only and priming is not recommended. Priming is only necessary if there is existing paint on the surface. In that case, we recommend our Rust-Oleum Garage & Interior Floor Primer. In regards to recoating, as long as you don't spread the coating too thin, a second coat isn't necessary. You can use the coverage rate for each kit as a guide for how much is required. It's always best to buy an extra kit in case your floor is extremely porous. If a second coat is required, you can reapply before 72 hours without any prep. After 3 days, you will need to scuff sand with 80-100 grit, clean off the dust and recoat. The clear coat is designed for extra protection and provides a high gloss finish which the chips/flakes can disguise. It's not necessary to apply the sealer to seal the flakes as the flakes stick well to the garage floor coating kit application.

since this is Rust-Oleum CANADA, I have a Canadian question. How does this product hold up to the Canadian Salt that is used during the winter months? I drive my vehicle on public roads and snow builds up in my wheel wells and under the car. That snow is contaminated with road salt. I park my vehicles in my garage, and the snow melts, along with the road salt. On an untreated concrete surface, the salt eats away at the slab. Will the salt also eat away at the EPOXYSHIELD?

Hi, I recommend waiting 3 days to start a quick power wash, yes quick because your concrete is brand new so there wont be that much dust/dirt on it. Then follow the video. Wait a day before applying the 2nd coat, wait another day to apply a 3rd coat. A 3rd coat is not necessary at all!

@RustOleumCDN
@RustOleumCDN 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly! Prior to recoating we recommend to use a wire brush to remove any loose or peeling paint and sweep or rinse away the dust. Then, follow up with a Cleaner & Degreaser to wash the whole surface, using the wire brush on any exposed concrete. Once the surface is dry, scuff sand the entire surface with 80-100 grit sand paper, or use our Zinsser Garage & Interior Floor Primer. If you do use the primer, recoat with the Epoxyshield within 6 hours, but no more than 48 hours, to ensure proper adhesion of the topcoat.

Hi! This can be done, but we usually discourage it because the material, once mixed, has a potlife of just a few hours. All activated material would need to be used within that time frame. If you are working quickly, or with a partner, all components can be activated at once. Otherwise, we recommend activating one gallon at a time.

You should recommend to your customers to diamond grind the floor instead of acid etch. You get a much better bond with diamond grinding and you don’t have acid running down in the joints that will reactivate later and cause problems. You should also recommend purchasing the same lot number material so all the colors match.

@RustOleumCDN
@RustOleumCDN 3 жыл бұрын
We'd recommend first checking with the manufacturer of the self-leveling concrete to make sure it can be top-coated. If it can be top-coated, to prep the surface we recommend cleaning, etching, doing any patch and repairs, sanding the edges on repaired areas to smooth it out, and then scuff sanding the repaired areas with 220-grit to promote adhesion. And finally, remove the sanding dust and coat the whole floor.

Hello, I am plainng to DIY (epoxy) my garage concrete floor. After testing the floor with puring some water on it, I saw water stays and no soaking happened, does it mean it has a sealer on it? If so, I know etch can remove the existing sealer. My question is that if the package comes with 2 bags of etch, do I still need to use the primer? (because the etch is able to remove the existing sealer) I am a little confused, if I do need to use the primer, then the 2 bags of etch will not be needed? (Because the primer will be applied first.) Thanks!

@RustOleumCDN
@RustOleumCDN 4 жыл бұрын
If there is existing paint, we recommend priming with our Zinsser Garage & Interior Floor Primer. To prep the surface, use a wire brush to remove any loose or peeling paint. Then rinse or sweep away any dust and other particles, and clean the entire floor with a cleaner & degreaser. Next sand (60-80 grit) or spot etch any exposed concrete surfaces, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before priming. The primer must dry for a minimum of 6 hours, but no more than 48 hours to ensure proper adhesion of the topcoat.

One thing NOT mentioned is... the fact that the color chips do not all adhere completely to the epoxy, many having edges that stick up a little. Would have been nice to address this with the solution they recommend. For me, I'm gonna use a stiff bristle push broom and go over it, then clean thoroughly and put down a clear coat with anti skid. Also, would have been nice to mention how thick of a coat to apply...I think I went a bit too thin in some areas, but if you apply the color chips as you go (which they recommend), then you really can't do a second coat.
@RustOleumCDN
@RustOleumCDN 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, we appreciate your feedback! Since the chips are tossed onto the wet film, it's natural for the chips to land on top of each other and not completely stick to the coating. A quick sweep will remove any loose chips. As for thickness, the Technical Data Sheet recommends to apply 6 mils coat thickness. We've passed along your feedback so our team can consider including these details in the instruction sheet so there's no confusion in the future.
