after 3 days of hell with windows not wanting to mount my shared folder, i finally figured out how to fix that and im scraping my first console emulator. Pictures its downloading look amazing. Everything is automated, and the scraper adds a great value to our DIY consoles. I wish there was a faster method of scraping it. I have allot of games and it will take days to scrape all of them.

If you have a free account, you only get one scraper process. If you have a paid account, you get many scraper processes. Also what was the issue / fix to get windows to see your share drive?

I've been looking for a Scraper to fix the one inside retropie. If this works as easy as you make it seem you're AWESOME!!!!!

Ricky Overton thanks for the comment! Definitely easy but here is a tip that helps this work soooo much better. After you setup your account and login and all that, make a copy of the folders to your desktop. Especially if it’s for the Pi. This saves so much time and issues. For whatever reason I’ve noticed it runs really slow on the live system (like my Pi). So if I simply copy down the folders and run Scraper against that then it’s faster. Then just upload to the Pi / system. If it’s for PC then this is pointless but anyway, this is something that will help.

Hey man can you please show how to get recalbox or retropie to show up in network. I've turned on discovery and still nothing. I've googled it as well and found no help. I cant for the life of me get it to show up in my network. And I'm being told to use this scrapper but I cant get past the second step of clicking the rooms folder.

If you add another game and scrape again does it scrape every single game again or just scrape the info for one game? I would Imagine if it took 2 hours to scrape 700 games and the next day you wanted to add another game and it took another 2 hours that would be annoying.

bigboobiessogood yeah I ran into that too. Pretty much both scrapers that I’ve used rescan a directory and start over because they are meant to scan a “romset”. But if you’re adding games it can be a challenge. Couple ways to work around this. So you can scrape the game by itself then just upload the new media files. Then copy over the gamelist.xml info into the old gamelist.xml. The other way is to donate so you get a validated account and it will go faster. So an hour turns to 10 minutes.

Anyone has the same problem? The genre isn't scraped anymore. I reinstalled the most current verrion and had no luck. Examining the gamelist.xml the tage is missing entirely. A couple of weeks ago it still worked. Happens with all systems installed, use Emulationstation on windows. PS. Also it ignores text case (always uses "as is" insted of lower case or uppercase.

@@oleschoolgamers I used the Raspberry Pi 3b+. I got all the metadata to show for all my roms except MAME (not sure what the issue is but I'll dig into it.) Again, thanks for the help.

Scratch that it works. I just needed to remove the "s" from the "videos" file it made. It has to be video.

Can the process be paused and resumed at a later time? Or can you set it to skip over games that are already scraped? I'm asking because I was trying to figure it out and didn't see anything

Can not display 4 different files and not separate? For example in my Retropie there are Box 3d, Marquee and Video that are displayed separately and in the position I put. I wanted the game tape to appear, too. I'd have to do it. But I wanted him to show the tape as a single image so I could position it wherever I wanted to.

kerolayne Araujo never heard of tape, is that same thing as the marquee? If so they should all be separated into different media folders depending on what you asked for in the last section of Skraper where you select what kind of media, the size and resolution and all that. Let us know where you get stuck.

Is there a way to simply tell the program to "update" my current list? Like, I have 600 games in a folder, and I add 10. It seems like my options are "don't scrape" or "scrape the whole folder from scratch which takes a long time". If I'm satisfied with my current scraping from that system, how can I just tell the program to look for unscrapped games?

Not sure that’s an option as it builds a new gamelist.xml from scratch. The assumption they made when building this program was it would be run on a completed build, not each time after games are being added. That’s the way I understand it, but hit them up in the discord, maybe they added a new feature to do “updates” to a gamelist xml file instead of creating a new one, doubt it, but worth asking them.

Hey I have a question. I've used Skraper already for most of my games. But when I add a new game yo my library I can't figure out how to scrape videos for just that one game. I can only see how to rescrape for the entire system which takes forever. How do I just do it for one game at a time?

Skraper will scrape a folder that you point to. So what I do when I get a new game is put it in its own folder on my computers desktop have Skraper scrape that folder. Then I upload the rom and the snap, boxart, etc all at the same time to the folders on my Pi or whatever. The only problem with this solution is you ha e to manually edit the gamelist.xml and add the new game and paths to its files. It’s not hard just look at another game entry and you’ll see the syntax. If you’re not comfortable with that, then yeah you gotta scan the entire folder again.

The video files seem to be incompatible with my frontend I guess. I was using uxs but when I was done I had to use fat renamer to remove -video from the name of the videos to get them working. Thought this would work but no. 😞

Mine is the opposite ... If I run it normal it works fine , but if I run it as administrator I get errors .

Ahm I scraped but it did not gave me a gamelist.xml but yes on the media :( any solution on this?

I had that happen one time so I ran the scraper against my rom files in the folder on my computer instead of against the folder on my Pi. Then just upload the gamelist.xml and media files to the Pi after. If that doesn’t work, hit them up on their discord channel, they have the link to it on the bottom of the page. Lotta folks in there willing to help.

Can you please make a tutorial on how I can make my retropie connect to Samba Shares on my PC, I am so lost on how to do this?

Retro Nation it’s not hard but does take some work. By default most Retropie versions come with samba installed and configured. There’s several tutorials out there, but let us know where you get stuck. Also, you can run Skraper against a folder on your desktop locally and then upload the scraped files to the Pi through ftp or scp methods.

Dude, I've been trying to use this skraper to get thumbnails (boxart) for retroarch. It works, the thing is the way it names the thumbnails (matching it with the ZIP files names instead of the database name) retroarch can't use them. I was wondering if you knew how to make it use the database name instead of the file itself (if its even possible). Thanks.

Good question. It’s been a while since I had to get the boxart, but I remember there was a naming issue regarding the extension. I talked to the Skraper folks on the discord channel and they helped me, I’d hit them up. I also remember using a tool called “Fuzzy Rename” when I set mine up as well. Either route should work out for you, let us know!

Use a real front end like everyone else. RetroArch just isn't built for most things a front end does, or does it worse. Also if you're using proper known sets the zip name will be the correct one anyway.

@@MrBorderdown Im using no intro romsets and I cant use a "different frontend" since Im trying to load up my Wii U. And AFAIK, vanilla retroarch is the only one available for that platform... Thanks for the input but doesnt answer my question.

Did you find fuzzy rename (I think that’s what it was called) or a solution to your skraping issue? I went on the discord and they helped me cause I had same issue and I think I needed that extra software but can’t recall honestly if I needed it.

signed up for an account validated site lets me in but the application says invalid and says it will take 6hrs to scrap by that time my GPI case would have caught on fire where my pi zero w is stored got any suggestions? Edit since it will not let me validate in the application running in admin mode like stated in the video say invaild and as I said the site runs fine with my account info I have moved the dir to my desktop says will only take 1hr there so i guess this will keep my pi from catching on fire its to bad it would not accept my subscription in the application anyways thanks for the vid.

damarlboromans thanks for the update, just saw this. I have noticed that it runs a lot faster when going straight to the PC vice the device (like a Pi). I think the SBC NICs just don’t have the same throughput as a regular PC, or its most likely the power of the device that’s a bottleneck. Glad you got it working though, thanks for the comment!

Hi, thanks for the video- I was hoping you may be able to help me. I've scraped all of my systems and everything has worked great except that all of the genre sections say unknown. Do you know if there's a way to get them scraped or if it's possible to just fill in the missing genre information only using another scraper? Thanks!

Great question... and sorry you're having that issue, I never had that problem. I would assume if ALL roms on a system are not getting genre info its a bad romset (naming wise). Couple things to prove that. I'd test scraping the roms on your desktop, just try one and verify the results. You can also try getting another romset just to see if anything changes. Update us with the results so others know if they have the same issue in the future, interesting problem!

Thanks for the reply- its on all systems, and the roms are from numerous different sources. Its very odd. Whilst googling about the issue I found a post from a guy having the same problem but there were no responses yet. Ill try scraping some roms on my desktop as you suggested and ill let you know the results. Huge thanks again!

rossb3000 awesome! I give the desktop scrape a 99% chance of working, I had a few issues and the desktop method seemed to always work. My theory is that scraping a Pi or other system while it’s running and referencing the roms and media files in memory probably causes some of the issues. Best to scrape on a clean / quiet system. I’ve also scraped my Pi with Emulation Station turned off, I had success doing that as well.

Is there a way to use this with Coinops? I noticed that unlike Batocera or Reteopie, the media in Coinops is stored INSIDE each console. EX: Collections/Console Name/medium_artwork

It’s gonna download whatever you tell it too! It should also download it to where you specify. If you’re having issues I’d suggest asking them for help on their discord though.

how come when i scrape media then turn on emulation station. There is no picture I can see the square and hear the video playing but there's no image thanks

ortega917 it can be several things, and I had that same issue. The best people for these kinds of issues are on the discord channel, but I’m guessing it’s a problem with your video player. Quick way to tell is does ANY video play for ANY emulator? Or is it only one or two videos? Try to narrow it down. I remember I had to change some setting to fix that. The folks on discord helped me though, and I can’t remember the details off hand, try them and hopefully they can help.

How do you get it so the xml file for EmulationStation knows the folder location for the png files? When I edited the xml file, I had to insert the path manually and the png file name. But I can’t do that for every game.

Rockovissi it will generate a new xml in the folder you scrape. The folder path is whatever you pointed to in the first tab. It will create a “media” folder in there with your scraped media. Also, the reason I think this is the best scraper is they have a dedicated discord channel with people that will help. Try that as well.

@@oleschoolgamers Thanks! I tried that before once I realized you could generate the file in a specific path. But the bizarre thing is that it now never finishes scraping and gives an error message that a rom couldn't be scraped, then scrapes it, but it never finishes. I have to cancel it. I have it pointing to where EmulationStation defaults to for the xml files and the folder for image files. My roms on are a different hard drive. It worked once for some reason for GBA games. Should I try the discord channel with this? I'm just trying to scrape games as the EmulationStation scraper hasn't worked in years. Thanks!

Rockovissi i have heard a few others mention that, and they had a similar multiple hard drive setup. Maybe that’s the cause. A buddy of mine that had that issue copied his rom folder (Neo geo I think) to the same drive where skraper was installed. Ran the scraper on that copies folder, worked perfectly, then he copied it back up to his other hardrive. Now he also has the latest and greatest drives so copying up a 200Gb folder didn’t take long, it if that’s not an option due to speed or space, I’d say try the discord. Tommy responses to my questions, he’s pretty cool, the rest seem pretty cool as well. Hope that helps!

@@oleschoolgamers Awesome. I think I'll try that method first. It does scrape everything if I keep the default root settings that it creates the folder in my roms folder. So maybe that's the case. I wish EmulationStation was a bit more configurable since it automatically creates the settings folder in the users folder on my main hard drive. But I thought that may be the problem so I'll check it out! Thanks again!

Working brilliantly skraping Raspb erry Pi Retropie Rom folders ...BUT For some reason it does not automatically find the AtariJaguar folder and ROMs when I run the wizard and I have to add it manually. However, although it then reads all the ROMS it errors on every single one trying to save images etc the /roms/atarijaguar/media folder. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Great question, haven’t seen that behavior before. It’s usually something easy like either the wrong path or file name or permissions etc. If nothing sticks out as a possible issue, I’d go to their discord channel, they are very friendly and helpful there.

I'm using Ubuntu Linux on a pc. Can't find config folder like in windows. So I'm stuck at that part in the wizard. Any suggestions?

When it's "downloading the resouces" after i logged in with my screenscraper account (1 thread assigned), it took me already ~3h for the first centimeter of this loading bar.. this isn't supposed to be normal i hope? Anyone else faced this issue?

Great tutorial. I could actually scrape every PSX game with this method, although I couldn't get any video, just images. 4 images mix works for me, but not the Video setting after scrapping. Is it normal?

Asancu hmm, definitely not normal and sorry you’re getting that issue. I’d be curious if it does that for all systems or just the PSX. I’d also try scraping against the desktop folder instead of the system to see if that works better. Let us know, I’m very curious what the answer is!

How do you get your folders to show up on your network? I cant seem to map any network drives. can you give me step by step instructions on it?

I had this issue because I installed the lastest version of Raspbian and manually installed RetroPie, so I also had to manually install samba to get file shares. After that, I had to set up the config script for samba to share the folders. I was then able to navigate to the folders from Windows, but Skraper's file browser still won't find the RetroPie unless you map a drive to a shared folder. It may be easier to just install a full RetroPie build/image to keep it simple if you're in the same boat I was.

Ok, I can't seem to figure out Samba for Recalbox. If I scrape these on a rom folder on my desktop, do I need to unzip all of the files to keep the media before transferring it to the pi?

When you scrape a folder of roms on the desktop it will create a new gamelist.xml in the rom folder and a media folder in there as well. The media folder will have all the snaps and boxart etc. You need to transfer the new media folder and the new gamelist file.

So I have all my roms on an external hdd along with the retropie folders. Really all the micro sd card does is boot the system.. However, I CANNOT for the life of me access my pi over network as my pi simply does NOT show up. Yes I enabled SSH already. I can access my pi Via putty and winscp but not over network so I can skrape them.... any ideas? Also is there a way to use my screenscraper membership with the 50000 daily limit on the pi itself without having to go through this tech? Also Also, How do I know if these roms get scraped into where I want them to go? I tried using this tool on my atari 2600 folder, but the skraper UI never generated any gamelist nor do i think it actually saved any of the scrapes to wherever it put them, not that I could find them. Any viable help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a LOT of issues. Two paths. One, just do the scraping on your rom folders on your computer, not on the pi, then scp them to the pi. Two, go to their discord channel, lotta folks there willing to help. Look for Tommy. Wish ya the best buddy.

After setting the path, it gave microsoft.net error, indexoutofrangeexception. after that it would not let you start, it ways you can only do it after running the wizard.

I can't select the folders on retropie from my PC what is all this samba shares stuff. I can connect with a file browser from windows to retropie but when I click the folder button in skraper I cannot see the retropie folders!!! I hate this shit!

If skraper can’t see the retropie folders it could be several things, but usually samba isnt setup right on the Pi. I’d recommend going to the discord channel for scraper and asking for assistance. They’ll walk you through the issue step by step. They’ve helped me on several issues. The link to their discord is on the bottom of the website linked in the video.

I tried several times to register on their website and never got the email with the confirmation code, also, it looks like you have to donate money before you get additional scraping work engines.

Strange that you didn't get the confirmation code, sorry you're having that problem. As far as the donation, that's only to make it work faster, you get a single engine by default. The donation is good I think because these guys are like you and me, just gamers trying to make gaming more fun. But even with a single engine, you can get several thousand games scraped in a few hours, I did one of my MAME sets which had around 1100 roms and it finished in couple hours with just one engine. But just to be clear, whether you have one engine or many, you still get full access to their database for your images, snaps, marquees, etc. Hope that helps

I was able to register and put in my info to log in but the identity yourself button does not work. I an able to log in on my iPad with no problem, Any other way to log in...

G Johnson the more I thought about it the more I don’t think it’s a browser issue since scraper is a application. Did you setup your scraper account successfully before trying the validation ?

I can't make it work... I log in, complete the wizard and check the file extensions correctly but then I start scrapping and receive "No rom/game found in (rom_folder)" warning. How could I solve this problem?

Haven’t come across that one before. To be sure that everything was setup correctly, create a folder on your desktop and put just a rom or two in there. Run Scraper against that folder and see what happens. If it works then you know an issue with the setup wizard, if it doesn’t work then I’d talk to their group in discord, they are a pretty active group.

@@oleschoolgamers your solution worked to me! I moved my roms folder to the root of my drive, made an account on scraper website and restart the wizard, and the problem was solved, thank you!

Im using emulationstation on windows. Can you direct me on how to get this to work with it? Everything I am finding is referring to retropie

Dan Z For your setup just choose Generic Emulation under the “Game and Front End” tab. Actually you can leave it on Retropie, what really matters is that you set the roms directory correctly (Front End Path) in that tab. It just needs to know where your roms are.

@@oleschoolgamers Thanks for the quick response! I used the generic emulation option and selected my SNES rom folder. The program scraped everything needed and placed it into a media folder in my SNES rom folder. However, Emulationstation still wasnt showing the images or data. Still digging everywhere for answers but finding no real answer yet

Dan Z I’m not sure how yours is setup but ES usually has to be configured to point to media folders for each emulator. So you’d have to configure the emulator to point to the media folders for each type (e.g. snap, box art, marquee). They are most likely still pointing to the default locations. Not sure how to do that cause I don’t have ES on PC.

@@oleschoolgamers I scraped the PSP games. It was perfect, but then rescraped the system after adding 2 more GE's. The other four games all became a game called Point Blank for ps1. They were listed as the game in my PSP list but the two new games I scraped got media perfectly. I tried deleting the ROMs and media but the Games still appear as point blank. Sorry that its a bit difficult to explain if you haven't witnessed it. The same thing happened after trying to rescan my Dreamcast games. A number of DC games were rescanned as point blank. I think if I scan them individually it might fix the issue.

Deleting the cache from inside of skraper seems to be a solution.

@@oleschoolgamers I deleted the cache folder inside of the skraper program inside of the windows desktop, not inside of the RP. I then refreshed my media inside of command prompt outside of emulation station on the RP and I restarted the scraper redownloading the resources at startup. I'm sorry about the garbage typing but with the expanded desktop on my OS I can't see what I actually type. The shame.

Justin T pretty much. You get one scraper for free and if you donate you get more and it runs A LOT faster. I actually run this against my folders on my backup drive. That way when I upload my games I can upload all The video, images, marquee etc. at once.

@@oleschoolgamers i had it working a few weeks ago then tried it again and got net frame error. I tried a new install i selected config and rom folder then the error poped up it did the same on 2 pc's if you click continue it dont show any systems.

This explained how to use the program but not how to get it to work on a retro pie. There is no info on how to get them to find the folders for the .xml file. This video is trash in my opinion unless you need help knowing how to click buttons
