How to Use the Easel Inlay App

All inlays do not have to be cutting boards made out of expensive wood. Easel is getting better all the time thanks to an incredible team at Inventables. The inlay app is a great example. I'm showing two projects in detail and a third one that shows an example of a puzzle application that can be done with the inlay app or without. Leave me a comment on other types of inlay projects that you would like to see.

You need to keep it coming. I need a more in depth video of where when i want my engranving done with the v bit but instead it will try and cut my bowl out with a v bit also.

I have numerous videos showing the changing of the bits. Two stage carving and even more bit changes are possible with each workpiece added as necessary. Thanks for watching. If you have specific questions I’ll try and answer them

Great tutorial Paw Paw. I didn't realize the project saved all the different cuts into one file. Now that makes it real easy. I was making separate files! Thank you for such a clear explanation.

Great video! One note after watching the first 7 min. Before 7 min you move pieces out, delete everything under and move it back and type in coordinates. If you would have copied the black pieces ( Ctrl-C), delete them and the gray pieces, then Ctrl+V, the black pieces would have been copied back to the same locations. Same way you can copy pieces between workpieces.

Great tutorial. The only thing that would make it easier for adding in-lays. Instead of deleting the old picture, put the pocket where you want it, send it to the back and then delete the picture when its on top.

Great tutorial Phillip, good variety of inlay methods. Looking forward to seeing Easel doing a V-Carve inlay soon, shame there isn't an automated tool for achieving this!

Great video. This answered a bunch of questions. I have seen some videos where a hole for a pin is drilled to mark the different positions for tiling. Does Easel have that function?

Yes, just add the holes into your design at the appropriate location and diameter.

Great video! Just wondering what the bit size was used for the inlays? I'm assuming the same 16th bit

It all depends on the detail you are trying to achieve. This was done with an 1/8” straight. Make sure whatever you choose, you the same bit throughout. If painting leave more clearance. Mine are actually a little tight

Do you find you need to increase the tolerance because you're painted the inlay? If it fit nicely with that bare wood, does it get to tight after spraying? Thank you

Hi, I love watching your videos because you explain everything very well. But when I try the inlay app my cutout has yet to fit. I’m using an 1/8 straight cut bit and I made sure the inlay is cutting on the line. I even tried to change the tolerance to .01 and it still doesn’t fit. What am I doing wrong.

If the inlay already doesn’t fit wouldn’t cutting outside the line just make it worse. when I said doesn’t fit I mean it won’t go in at all. @@PawPawsWorkShop

Hi Paw Paw. I'm a new subscriber. I'm in the market for a CNC and I was interested in the fox alien. In your opinion do you think it would be sufficient to cut guitar bodies?? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

It’s very capable of doing the carving. I do not know the size of the guitar bodies so make sure that it will fit on the wasteboard of the machine. If not you will need a larger cnc

Great video. I do have a question tho. Am i mistaken that you used some easel features that are only available as paid pro features? Specifically, the font and V bit

There is a selection of fonts for the basic easel. The Pro version of Easel has many more forts available. VCarve is a Pro feature

actually most of this video can be done with easel basic. The pro features are the VCarve and the additional fonts. There are a few other features that really don’t apply to this video

Question at 8 min: why didn't you use the inlay app separately for the 2 pieces? Seems you have to deal with them being coupled later.

Thanks for replying. I was using the inlay software. I tried a different design and it seemed to work fine. Must have been something I the file I was using.
