I would include the simplification of the infamous autopunch in logic by using the marquee with the R key. So easy:)

Just today I was looking at something else where the marquee tool was used, and wrote down to myself, STUDY THE MARQUEE TOOL, because it's so powerful and it's hard to grasp everything it can do. Thanks! Yes sometimes that will happen if the recording time doesn't overlap regions. You can select both regions and hit 'J' on your keyboard to join them into one region.

How can you see what the length of the selection is in time?

You can just reference the bar lines against the light colored selection region. Also the LCD will display the position of the marquee tool as you are selecting. Hope that helps!
