So is this setting, using the noise gate, better than using the "Noise Reduction" setting? I was just playing with the Adaptive Noise Reduction setting today and it seemed to help reduce the background noise in my audio, but I was still getting some distortion of my voice.
@MikeRussell

100%. This will not touch the quality of your audio. DeNoise will and Adaptive Noise Reduction can sometimes take a second to kick in.

Another item to note and it's why I came here to see how to do a noise gate in Audition. Say you record a podcast and there are 4 voices talking into directional dynamic cardioid microphones, but because of proximity the mics pick up not just background noise but the other people talking. It records these at lower volumes. You don't want those voices while you are personally silent and the same goes for the other's mics being recorded. Noise Reduction uses pattern recognition to identify identical sounds and remove them. Say you are doing an interview and a bell starts ringing in the background while talking and continues while nobody is talking. You can sample the point where nobody is talking and use it to remove the sound when people are talking. But These background voices I mentioned are not removable using that feature. The best thing to do is mute any mic not in use while recording, but that's not always practical while you are hosting and playing engineer on your portable equipment. So a noise gate will do just that for you in post. I was using a Zoom Podtrak P4 which is marvelous if you are using it in a regular room with a fan or an AC running in the distance, and can distance yourself or do phone in's as it has it's own noise gate to cut out typical background noise. But this situation I described will need a noise gate hardware solution or one in post.

Mike, love the NG in AA. In a previous noise gate video, you advised to set the gate to the peak amplitude of the selection of the silence. In this one, you advise average RMS of a wider clip with silence and non-silence. Is one of these methods better than the other. I believe the numbers will usually come out close to each other.

OMG thank you! I really was looking for a solution for this problem for a long time now. Because sometimes, when we record a podcast via videocall and the headphones are too loud, I could hear the voice of the other one on my track. That was really annoyoing and took me hours of filling in silence manually. Thanks again!

That's a fantastic piece of advice and I didn't realise the birds just outside my recording space were quite so loud! I don't have the de-noise option in Audition 2018, so will be using this from now on. Thank you Mike.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean, I'd recommend updating to the latest version. If the birds are that loud the noise gate will be easily detectable with the bird noises reappearing when the voice is on which could produce some very unnatural sounding audio. On the flip side de noise, or any noise reduction technique does lower the overall sound quality so the best option is to find a recording space that's acoustically sweet and away from the birds.

With an inexpensive mic and a little digital wizardry, an otherwise unusable recording can become something ready to put on radio. I'd still suggest using a proper vocal strip, though, something like the dbx 286s; that was the first vocal processor I ever bought and it took nearly all the post-processing out of my workflow.

Hi Mike, love your videos! I find that I prefer the software noise gates over the dbx. Even with my best settings on the channel strip, I found myself still tweaking in post, and eventually, the 286s became a dust collector. There is just a level of precision that I can't seem to match with the hardware and a raw file gives me so many more options for compare/contrast. That said, I think the dbx is brilliant for live application. Thanks again for doing these.

Hi Mike- I'm so happy I found your channel its been a lifesaver for my audiobooks! I have a question for optimizing my workflow even more: Would you recommend applying the noise gate before or after normalizing and compressing the audio? My instinct was to do it first, so that unwanted noises arent amplified at all, but thats just a beginners guess! Any feedback would be awesome!
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 жыл бұрын
For recording audio books my honest answer would be to avoid using a noisegate and get your recording environment as quiet as possible. If you must use a noise gate then I'd recommend using it as early on as possible and "repairing" your audio before processing it. Just be careful that the noise gate doesn't leave the audio obvious sounding that a gate has been used.
@madimicucci
@madimicucci 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikeRussell ooooh ok thanks for that insight. And I can see why you recommend that because it is hard to get an accurate level for long recordings...
@MikeRussell

The issue with the noise gate is that is either all audio on or all audio off. If there is background audio it will be made more noticeable by the noise gate as you’ll hear it cutting back in when you are speaking.

Quick question Mike! In this example, you took an audio sample to apply the noise gate. Can this also work with selecting the entire audio session? For example, if I record a podcast that is an hour long, I can select all and do the analysis to find the average RMS? The same principle but just applied to the entire session. This looks like such an amazing tool.

Thanks for that. I do have a 286s, but found when I used it, there would be a fuzziness to my voice, that I can only describe as a vocal halo. Bypassing the 286, the sound is dirtier, but I don't have that halo any longer once I apply the AutoGate.

What you describe is exactly what the expander gate is designed to do. It cuts all sounds below the threshold but once audio goes above the threshold all audio is allowed through. Specially for my voiceovers, which one takes it out better without affecting the quality

Hi IsaBella, the best way to eliminate this is at source? Do you know where it's coming from? Is it possible to eliminate? Also how loud is the background noise? If it isn't overpowered the voice over you may be able to use a noise gate to eliminate the noise but if it's clearly audible in the voice recording a noise gate will not work for you.

Thank you very much for this video. I'm a great fan. Perhaps u know how to increase the attack above 10ms, say to 200 or 300ms?

Thank you for your support! To adjust the attack time above 10ms in Adobe Audition's Noise Gate, try increasing the Hold parameter for a longer attack time.

Could this be set as default if using same mic/studio? or should it be adjusted each individual session? Thanks you videos are the most informative out there.

It could be set as default as long as nothing changes but you should always be prepared to make subtle adjustments

Thanks for the noise gate idea from your reply on dialog checkerboarding. I’ll give this a whirl! Do you recommend the gate on the raw audio first. Or after some EQ and Compression? Thanks!!

I would usually recommend using a noise gate first

Hi Mike - great tutorial as always. Was thinking about noise gating a room before recording into audition. I usually do my noise reduction/gating/de-noise etc AFTER recording, but can you set up the gates to kill all the ambient noise of a room prior to recording proper? How would you go about that? My theory was to set a gate on a multitrack channel, record room ambience with the usb mic, then once pristine-scrap that test track audio and “re-record” the podcast/VO on that multitrack with same fx noise gate settings on the track. Does that make sense or I am off base? Better way? You’re the best, thanks!

I would suggest processing the audio in post would be your best option. If you want to process in real time then get a dbx286s and set that up but that will only work with a XLR mic

@@MikeRussell thanks, Mike. I’ll keep that in mind. I thought maybe it would work to develop a preset of sorts. If I’m always recording in the same room I could kill the noise beforehand, but I defer to your expertise! Much appreciated.

Hey mike how are you? I have a question in regards to learning how to get the same sound for two voices at the same level. One voice is much louder than the other. Is it possible to actually get them at a same level? Thank you so much for your time.
