great tutorial. Thank you for making the video. For those who, like me, use a Phottix flash, you can put it in Slave mode by pressing the M/S button( for at least 3 seconds) to activate the Slave mode. It was a little bit tricky to me.

awesome video and explanation. I just ordered 2 pocket wizards and somehow the order got messed up. So I cancelled the order and got my money back. In the mean time.....I stumbled on to this and now found I don't need pocket wizards. I have a T3i and I thought it didn't have the transmitter built in. So thanks for saving me money I didn't need to spend. I'm thinking another speedlite since I only have one. Thanks for taking the time to do the video for us.

It has to do with the vertical running focal plane shutter. If the shutter speed is too fast the bottom or closing curtain obscures the image before the flash exposure is complete.

as far as your comment on building a shield for the built in flash, I am under the impression the built in flash fires which triggers the off camera flash to go along with the shutter a split second later... so you arent geting any light from the built in flash (unless you choose the off camera + built in setting).

the YN460 II uses an optical trigger. So any flash will set it off as long as the flash is in slave mode. It won't be controlled through the camera. The wireless settings on the camera's menu would be under "built-in flash" and wireless. Keep in mind those settings only apply to canon or after market flashes that support E-TTL.
@dlmartin81
@dlmartin81 11 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it's already been covered in the comments but you need to set the external flash to "high-speed sync" in order to shoot at shutter speeds greater than 1/200.

It's nice that you've gone through the trouble of making and uploading a tutorial. But if you're trying to explain multiple flash setups, you really need to show the lighting ratios' effect on something (like a basketball or whatever), with and without the on-camera flash contributing to the exposure. You can't just fire them at nothing in the same general direction, it's missing the whole point of a multiple flash setup. You only have two groups available, so two external flashes are optimal for the demo (add a third one for the full 3 group E-TTLII setup with a 580EX or equivalent). You need to explain why you choose different power settings for your groups in order to accomplish a desired lighting ratio. When using the flashes in E-TTL metering mode, you should explain why you prefer Average over Evaluative (Evaluative being the more "intelligent" of the two metering modes). You should also explain the difference between flash ratios, group exposure compensation and group manual power settings. The "dog" metaphor is not useful for remembering things, the icons actually represent the two kinds of flashes as viewed from the side - a Cobra-head Speedlight, external, and the pop-up, internal. For the pop-up flash's light to not show at all in your photo (even as a reflection, when the controller is not having an otherwise significant output), you could use a "Nikon SG-3IR" panel, which you'll have to modify a bit (chip the left plastic rail where the hot shoe rail sensor is, so the camera doesn't detect it in the hot shoe and mistake it for a flash). Or you could stick an IR bandpass filter on the pop-up flash itself - google for ways of making one). I'd do another tutorial myself instead of critiquing this one, but I have a terrible accent and you'd probably find it distracting. And I don't have the patience either :p

Best Buy staff was correct. He or she was referring that the Canon 430EX II can't do Master in wireless IR ETTL II flash. MediaUnlocked showed us the Canon 430EX (& 430EX II) which is no longer being made or sell at Best Buy. The 430EX II is the current model. If you have a 1D series or 5D Series then the 430EX & 430EX II are useless when needing wireless IR flash. You then need to buy ATG Gold Wireless ETTL Systems. And it will be much better because it's now wireless radio ETTL flash.

Thank you for the explanation. Now for a left field question. Two really. First, Why does the on-camera flash need to work? Does it truely "transmit" or do the slaves sense the flash and respond? Second question, can any other ETTL wireless flash be set up the same way? I have a DF-483-CAN Vivitar and cannot seem to get it to work with my new T3i. Thanks again!

Sometimes taping a dryer sheet to the built in flash, or they sell diffussers that slip on to the pop up flash, can find them on line , or cut out plastic covered with women's stocking or wax paper, layers diffuse even more .... , kinda generic but it does diffuse the light . Tid bit

The camera shutter can only go up to 200 or 250 with some cameras if your shutter goes above this then you will start getting black lines the higher you push your shutter the less of the picture you will have. How far can the camera transmit to the flashes...are we talking like 10ft or 50ft? Can you boost the signal to get further distance? Also...So if you wanted to shoot as fast as the t3i could go (3.7fps) at night with 3 wireless flashes...could these flashes handle the short recycling time without missing a shot or would the camera wait to take the picture if the flash was to slow? Thanks and great video. Thumbs up!:)

Media Unlocked Great tutorial! I feel like I am reading another language when it comes to using external flashes. I asked around and tried to figure out what kind of flash to buy so I didn't have to use the on cam flash. Could'nt find anything so I just bought a basic beginner flash. I still can't figurebit out. I use it but the infrared beam flashes first,to figure out the distance,strength I assume and this annoys the people I'm shooting.Luckily they are friends helping me. I'm new but learning quickly. I bought a Bower digital autofocus drdicated flash for Canon E-TTL1/2. IT's for my T3i. Is this ok gor now,until I learn more about what I'm doing? And,is it supposed to flash the infrared in someones face or is there a setting I'm not using? Please help! Sorry for the long question and Thanks.....I am desperate for help on this.

You say you can't go over 1/200, but I thought the 430ex was capable of high speed sync. All you do is press a button on the flash and you can go as high as 1/4000 on the t3i. I don't own a canon but all this should work exactly as I described. Also, it's kind of strange that you have to enable the camera flash in order to trigger external flashes. Are all canons like that?!?

I'm assuming that this applies to the strobe flash studio lights as well? I just bought a set of two strobe monolight umbrella flashes to go with my T3i, and I was wondering if I needed to buy anything else in other to make them work? I'd like to be able to use these lights for weddings with my external flash. Is that possible? I can't seem to get that to work. I don't get it. I thought this was a radio transmitter based system. If the wireless flash control in 600D still requires the popup flash to go off, then what is it good for? Slave flashes can be set up to read and go off on any flash. So what's particular about this wireless control compared to something like Hähnel combi which would also control your flash?

Thanks, I have no idea my t3i with the 430 ex ii did this. I was under the impression that the 430 ex ii could not be used off camera, or what is called a slave based on what I have learned. (Hope I am using the slave terminology right). Thanks for introducing me to this.

If I don't want to use my on board flash as a transmitter I would have to buy a transmitter and receiver like a pocket wizard correct?

I was going to use this to photograph cats indoors with flash. I have read that just indoor lighting at night without flash doesnt work. I am in between the Nikon D5100 and the T3i, I want the T3i but the 5100 supposedly does better no flash low light shots. If external flash is the solution, then i need the built in flash to abstain in the shot. Thanks!

Will it work well with a 270ex ii? What the difference between this 200$ flash and the ones you have and the 40$ flashes?
