Please read. Based on the comments from this video. There are a few things I'd like to point out. 1. Several women have said that this method works but they use the bidet from the front to avoid transference of fecal matter. 2. Hand sanitizer does not kill c-diff or norovirus. I will be carrying some kind of soap in the future. 3. Use natural materials (rocks, sticks, leaves to get the big stuff first after an initial squirt so it's not as gross. This is a great community and I like that most everyone was civil in this thread and gave their own advice.

I have been curious a bit using one of these but ill still be using tp but it should reduce the use of tp. As a paramedic I am not touching my own poop with bare hands not the smartest idea 💡. Thanks for the great video and nice shirt too

I've been going nuts trying to find video guides on how to use these. Everything lacks actual instructions but you did a prefect job of showing your stance, where you hold the bidet and then gave a visual with the cup that provided the detail you couldn't film. Thank you so much for this. And thank you for including a summary in your comment section of extra tips or improvements. I'm a woman so seeing that we should use from the front was helpful after the initial demonstration.

backpacker bidet hack: don’t want to carry a dedicated water bottle or your drinking bottle for your bidet? use the little blue sawyer squeeze bladder that’s included and everyone throws away as your bidet bottle. it stores flat in your backpack, holds the right amount of water needed, comes out strong when you squeeze it and stands upright when it’s full of water.

Here's another LIFE changer for you. On my 3 week solo trip back in May deep into Idaho wilderness, I used my "Brondell". I got the bright idea to heat up some water by the campfire, added coldwater till I got it to that Luke warm temp. OMG. Using a bidet with warmed water deep in wilderness was LIFE CHANGING. Probably the highlight of my trip, lol

@@FrozensAdventures I remember walking back to my camp and sitting down just feeling so refreshed. The feeling was very weird when the water was perfect skin temperature. You almost couldn't feel anything. But good Lord, when you use filtered/ice cold creek or lake water in May up at Alpine Lakes in the Sawtooth Mountains, you will feel exactly where the bidet stream is hitting, lol. Dude, this is the crappiest conversation I have had all day long

Bidets work just fine for us ladies! It's arguably even more useful, as shaking it off after #1 isn't too effective for many of us. My SO prefers toilet paper, so I rinse with the bidet and use TP to clean up. The only real difference is that you wanna be careful to minimize splashback onto your lady bits when rinsing the backdoor... A UTI or BV on trail would suck 😬 Thanks for taking one for the team and giving an in-depth explanation. I'm sure this will help a lot of folks!

I started to experiment with bidets at the end of 2019. That worked out VERY well during the great TP shortage, and it also works for backpacking! I have had no issues, as a woman, using a bidet for almost 2 years. I just take care not to cross contaminate my "lady parts". It is also a nice way to wash up the personal stuff at the end of the day, and as you said, cut down on chaffing by washing off the salt from sweat.

Great video. I’ve just bought a similar product. Looks like it should be good for its purpose and also giving the meat and veg a good rinse at the end of a day’s hiking. Sweaty groin area can be quite uncomfortable when trying to sleep.

I have been using a bidet for a couple years and wouldn't want to backpack without it. As far as the back door is concerned, I still use a bit of paper to finish things off after a good squirt. The front gets a squirt then a shake. I have a dedicated small water bottle for the bidet. Since I carry baking soda to brush my teeth, I will occasionally put a pinch of that into the bottle to help neutralize odors down there that sweating and not bathing tends to cause. Been working great for me so far.

Good stuff. I made the switch to a bidet last year. I do use natural material (stick, pine cone, etc.) to get the big bits then rinse with bidet and a drop of Dr. Bonners soap to clean and polish the rear view mirror. I sanitize hands as final step.

I highly recommend using filtered water, have a backup system ready in case of failure (some TP) and for a treat, try warming the water (your bum will thank you). I also personally use a bottle that is dedicated for this purpose (not my drinking bottle) like the Brondell has.

@@FrozensAdventures You will love the pressure on the Brondell in comparison (much more precise due to the "nozzle" being harder than the one in your video). The one you showed is more flexible and "get off course" at times, lol. But the best feature is the one way check valve on the bottom of the bottle. That makes each squeeze MUCH better than the one in your video (each squeeze can get tons of air right into the bottom of the bottle. At first I didn't like the idea of having to use the provided bottle, but the more I tested several bidets, I preferred having a dedicated bottle for this task. I will say, you have some negatives with Brondell. It takes up more volume, weighs a little more (total of ~3oz for bottle, nozzle, sack), and costs a little more (on sale right now for $9.98 though on Amazon). The plastic they use seems more rugged and pliable, so it can be compressed down if needed and it won't hurt the bottle or fatigue over time (well, I've used it constantly for over a year now, at least). I was going to ditch the little stuff sack that comes with it, but since I ended up keeping it's bottle, I like it as my complete "poop kit". Surprisingly, they actually provide you with a round bottom stuff sack, so it contours the bottle perfectly You can get you deuce of spades, 1oz hand sanitizer, and some spare TP in a zip lock (as backup). All nice and contained.

I’ve been using this bidet at home and backpacking for 1+ years. At home, I just pat my bum with a washcloth. In the woods, I just let my tech underwear handle it. It dries fast, no issues.

I carry some body soap, some paper towels, and water. Spray first, then use soap, spray again, then use paper towels to dry up! Love feeling clean after a nature poop!

I've had two different bidets. The first one had a slit that allowed a lot of water through in only one stream which didn't offer a lot of pressure. The second one I bought has multiple holes which gives more of a sprinkler effect and also more pressure. I prefer the second one as it conserves water plus does a better job of cleaning. Both were found on Amazon.

The angle causes the water to drop straight down. Don't spray on your knee keep your pants up a bit. It's a lot easier in shorts.

I was trained by NOLS in 1998 to use natural tp. Rocks, sticks, snow and nothing live, ever. But I’ve been using this bidet at home and in the woods for 1+ years and it’s a game changer. So much cleaner than tp. I don’t scrub like the video shows but it’s something to consider. I haven’t had any issues just squirting the water and trying to get the stream a little deeper in the hole, if possible. Just relax, you can do it. Also, at the risk of TMI, the better your diet the easier the clean up. Increase your fiber and it seems like nothing sticks!

I would not necessarily have thought of using fingers as you describe, and your use of euphemisms was, shall we say, your "ace in the hole." Pika Outdoors powder soap is a great add to the bathroom kit. Transfer into a small empty sanitizer bottle and a little bit is perfect for scrubbing the hands after bidet'ing. Haven't used TP in the backcountry all year and I recommend these travel attachments to everyone! Thanks for making this video!

Would highly suggest you use soap after instead of hand sanitizer (or in addition). Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not very effective against norovirus.

Agreed. Soap is actually better for this purpose - it generally does a better job of breaking down the “bugs”, especially when used correctly. I highly recommend Dr. Bronner’s!

Thank you so much for bringing info about bidet use! Indeed the front squirt towards the rearview is much cleaner and safer option for females. I use tiny bit of bronner's soap, they Havel travel sizes which can be use for all cleaning of the bits on the trail.

Someone has probably mentioned this... Disinfectant doesn't "sterilize ". I would probably try the bottle then wipe with biodegradable wipes and bury them in the hole. The rock, stick, or leaf idea is a defenite no. I'd either injury myself or wipe with a leaf that is poisonous. 🥴

Yup, this is what I've been doing exactly for the last 3 years. Super refreshing. I do wash my hands afterwards with my mini bottle of Dr. Bonners then sanitize at the end. Otherwise same exact method for me.

I'm a bidet user at home and I got one of these for camping, even car camping at state parks with the family. The toilet paper there is so bad and one of the worst parts of the trip was always that. So now I use my portable bidet and life is way better. Hell I might even bring it on trips to use in hotels since I can't go back to not having a bidet in my life.

I haven't used one but wouldn't mind. I like the thought of essentially washing up down and back there each time I go. I might bring dried out wet wipes anyway though just for a good cleaning once and for all at the end of each day. Just pack them out, no biggie.

Does hand sanitizer get rid of norovirus, or do you need soap? Seems to me I recall a nurse telling me when pooping, you should use soap for that very reason. I could be wrong.

No only bleach and hydrogen peroxide. You can get noro from TP though too so take your pick. That was a worry of mine before hiking the AT

I appreciate you putting this video out. You talking about how much a of a game changer it was on one of your trips was the straw that got me to give it a try, and I'm glad I did!! Showing how you "polish off" the rest was the one area I wasn't sure. I still struggle with the bare hand cleaning aspect, but the continual spray from the bidet makes it seem not as bad. How does planning for water change with this? Do you find yourself having to crap near a water source, or carry an extra liter for pooping?

I usually fill to capacity before camp or at least can find water in the morning. If it's dry area I'll take TP. I'm pretty regular so I can plan this out pretty good. I know everyone is different though.

Great video again! Thanks so much! I do actually the same, but I use a medical glove for my left (cleaning) hand. After finishing my "business", I slip the glove inside out and put it into my poop-bag. When I need it next time, I just blow from a short distance in the glove to turn it outside out, and ready to clean. One quality glove usually last me about 7-10 days on a hike. So I never have to touch my ass with bare hands.

This avoids the actual objection you’ll face which you 100% need to answer every time you tell ppl this or you just simply won’t convince them: how clean are your hands AFTER? This is more to do with how you sanitize but you should demonstrate even if it’s clumsy and not terrifically scientific some way to test the germs on the hand. Bc you’re making content, this is an effective way to prove your case. I’ve seen ppl do this with glow germ kit. I mention bc in these tests it’s actually not the most effective way without extensive sanitizing which ppl are not likely they do. They tend to clean hands but not as much as they should rendering the method not as convenient as wet wipes which are a happy middle ground implementing them into your method. When combined, sanitizing with a strong enough cleaner even with human error ( not enough time thoroughly washing) this tends to yield good results. The main problem of course which this is two years old I’m sure you’ve learned hand sanitizer isn’t what you want. You need a proper soap. Different virus killer. But hey atleast you didn’t shy away. Honestly lean into it. This is something ppl gotta do. No point in bashful! Thanks for going there

Frozen, I love that you did this video. I've been so curious about how these work, however, I now have new questions: * How do you keep your pants from getting wet or worst splashing your big stuff into them? * How much extra water do you find you are now carrying in order to have enough for your business? * Do you only use filtered water to do this? Is it dangerous to squirt questionable water onto your rearview mirror? * I hope you wash your hands *for real* before you eat your hamburger at the end of your trip!?!?!?

Hey Nick, to answer your questions : 1 shorts make it easier, never had a problem 2 not much extra water is needed. 3 I use filtered water. I would keep it filtered

I've thought about trying this but haven't yet. Things that worry me personally: 1) my balance is not the best, 2) getting my pants wet, 3) not enough water in the bottle, 4) getting the smell off my hand, 5) being secretly photographed, 6) getting a new unfortunate trail name... For sure I would need to practice this in advance of doing it for real.

Seems good but also seems you need to get it dry. Moisture can cause chafing. That's my take on it.

I carry baby powder with me most trips to cut the chaffing. I am pretty dry after I shake off.

I may switch to one of these but i think it would work better from the front for me and also not using your hand but a wet wipe to get the final pass. Using hand seems pretty unsanitary even with soap/sanitizer. Im just not sure about this method when it is 30degrees out. That water would be freezing cold.

I'll let you know in a few months when it gets cold out. I know brushing my teeth is terrible in the winter if it's in the low 20's.

That's a cool idea but I see some problem. - I would pair thos method with the "leaf" one. I have been cleaning my butt using large leaves (the one that snails like) and it worked nice. - The problem I see here is the hand sanitizer that, as it's already been said, doesn't remove the nastiest stuff. - I think that this is a good idea if we manage to remove 60/70% of the TP we used to carry

Do you have a dedicated bidet bottle, or do you use your drinking bottle?

With the angle of the bidet and the distance the bidet shoots the water. I find myself just using the dirty water bottle.

i'm sure there's things you could get from dirty water possibly. I'd go with the clean drinking water bottle. Practice a bit before a trip so you can get things down.

I guess a person needs to plan ahead where they are going to go in case they get "the runs" and for that scenario I don't know how they are going to handle that or for the ones that aren't so flexible to crouch down, position themselves and reach back.

So, you spray the behind, all wet. Then you just hoist your shorts? With a wet backside? It seems you need TP to dry the area before hoisting the shorts. What am I missing?

I’ve never had a problem figuring out how the bidet gets the cleaning done. I just don’t get how you avoid getting your pants wet. Seems like if they’re around your ankles, that’s also where the water is landing.

@@FrozensAdventures makes sense. I suppose I just need to give it a try. I have the same bidet you used in the video, but haven’t tested it yet. I saw one bit of advice to practice by doing your normal routine at home, (go, use tp or whatever’s you do to clean up) then get in the shower and try it out with no mess to worry about. Get comfortable aiming where you have a change of clothes ready to go.

Great information presented in a concise and straight forward manner! I found that practicing at home prior to a trip helps to understand the basics so you'll feel more confident doing the process in the woods. I prefer to use a dedicated bottle just for my bidet and I carry a small container of Dr. Bronner's soap to wash my hands with. Love your videos...keep them coming!!

If you adopt this method then you need to also go back to the root method of handling food and only touch food with the non wiping hand. We have tableware now, but we still touch a lot of food, bite our nails, pick our noses, etc. Be very mindful of that or you will likely regret it.

Crap, I forgot another crappy piece of advice, lmao... USE EXTREME CAUTION with the bidet product he has shown and linked to. This is the one I used before switching to Brondell and I had the bidet pop off right at THE worst possible time. Total crap fest and nasty as heck to clean up . I almost stopped using bidets

@@FrozensAdventures yeah, I think it was the red one. When I tried the white and blue one that came in the 3 pack they didn't pop out. So possibly just a faulty injection molding or something. Any way, you know how it is. Once you get crap on your hands you change your tools and/or process so you don't get crap on your hands. I still gag, thinking about what I had to go through to get out of that situation. I wasn't prepared for a malfunction and with your pants down, you don't just go the 100 yards back to camp easily of you know what I'm saying Maybe some advice here would be to have a good backup like some TP with you just in case of malfunction. With my Brondell I keep my backup in the pouch it gives you. OH... ALSO.... Back to my crappy situation, my dang Smart Water bottle also got all "dirty", which was also my drinking bottle. So that is another whole plus with Brondell. It is a separate water container (light), and is only used from cleaning your bum.

@@JeremiahBlasi yeah, I did. I think that red one was defective, because I couldn't repeat the same error on the other 2 that came in the 3 pack. My warning was that others may also get a defective one (or not follow all of the tricks to get it on there solid). When it fails, boy does it fail, and then you've got a big mess on your hands (Literally, lol). But I also like the Brondell bidets bottle, which has a one way check valve on the bottom (which properly lets the bottle breath after each squeeze). Not to mention, you don't use one of your Smart Water bottles which are used for drinking. Like I say at the end of all my videos, "Remember to hang your hang, and as always, Happy Hang'en". Hang your hang, hike your hike, etc. I'm only sharing my experience and tips/tricks, not saying my way is the best. Each person has their own requirements and should evaluate their processes and gear on how well they meet their own needs. Have a great day :-)
