In this video, "How to Use Trout Lures - BFS Trout Fishing - 22 Aldebaran BFS / Jackson Meteora 45", Hobie-Wan Kenobi shows you many different methods to use sinking trout lures for BFS fishing. Lure used in this video is the Jackson Meteora 45 trout minnow.
Sinking trout lures, such as the Jackson Meteroa 45 and the Kanade, are the most popular minnow style bait for BFS fishing. The heavy weight and slim profile allow for long casting. Being heavy and slim allows the lure to swim easily and true in fast current to make contact with the bottom of the stream.
Choosing a lure that falls in a horizontal position will increase the versatility of the angler. Also look for lures that have a thick lip if you fish around a lot of rocks and bounce the lure off the rocky bottom to trigger fish to bite.

Don't be afraid to BFS for bass. I have a lot of success for bass with finesse lures

@@HobieWanKenobi It's mostly because I'm just getting into swimbait fishing and dedicating my time and money to that for the time being. When I trout fish it's in small streams where I need better accuracy and I think I'm going to love BFS for that. I'll definitely also use it for bass.

Great video! Im a total beginner and just ordered a rod and a few Duo spearhead / Meteora. Given my limited experience and the fact the rivera near me move quick would you recommend a float with a fly or light jig would be a good place to start? Just dont wanna go out and lose a bunch of these nice minnow baits! I also ordered a few amall spoons from japan ranging from 1-3g.

(Video suggestion hobie wink wink 😉 zephyr plus walmart rod and lures for those of us that think bfs breaks the bank , that was actually how I learned to baitcast in my neighborhood bush and shrub overgrown park it's huge and filled with bass )

This lure (Jackson Meteora) is more compact. The Spearhead being 1gr heavier casts slightly better but, the twitching and action on the pause is better with the Meteora 45.

Hello from Norway. Have been watching some of your videos, great work. Looks so fun. I have been spin fishing for 30+ years, rivers here for trout. Just have to ask, why do you fish up stream? I am used to fish down stream with my spinners. Cheers

Fish tend to look upstream while wait for prey. Another reason is that while walking, sediment from your steps in the streambed would travel in the fishes face if walking upstream. Spinners are easier to fish in slow current or downstream like you do.

I have some Daiwa Vega and Lupin spoons. I tend to use spoons rarely but, i should use them more. I remember fishing an area stocked pond and the trout would not strike anything but a 0.8gr silver spoon.

Good note on looking for one with a thick lip. My 46s aim lip cracked quickly in the rocky water, which is a $15 lure. What minnows would you recommend with a thick lip?

The Jackson Kanade has a thick lip while still having good action. the Meteora 45 has been pretty durable. I mention in my next video (Glass Progressive field testing) I have broke a few Creep AIM 46s.

I use BFS gear for bass too. It is a very effective method to use finesse lures and have the power to pull bigger fish away from cover.

@@HobieWanKenobi do they carry enough for at least 80 foot of braid line ? maybe use a 8 to 10 pound braid line. must be fun reeling in a bass on a BFS..i salt water fish only and we have bone fish and if i catch one on a BFS its game over lol

BFS reels will typically hold around 55yds of 8lb mono. People use BFS for saltwater fishing quite often. The Daiwa Gekkabijin AIR TW I have is designed for finesse saltwater fishing. It is a really nice reel...and I only fish freshwater.

What bfs reel for the first time for me to use, you know bfs reel use a preaty slim line, the first time I use baitcaster I need to cut all my line because backlash, it's first cast you know I need to go back to by new line..

With BFS reels having shallow spools, the risk of a devastating backlash is low. If you are a beginner, you can use a 20m length of line on the reel to practice. Once to are able to cast easily without backlash, put the line you plan to use for fishing. Do not try to cast hard to get more distance.

Hi I love stream trout fishing too. I use mostly japanese lures. Meteora, kanade, trout tune, ryuki, ito craft, d contact. Can you recomend me how to fish deep pools ? About 3 to 5 ft deep

Those Meteora minnows have great action on the pause. Keep semi-slack line to have the lure shimmy into the depths. Trout Tune HW is another good choice

I havent noticed any difference at all. I use this VARIVAS Sight Edition or Bush Trail quite a bit for trout.

You are moreso limited by line capacity than weight. I have used a little of 7/16oz or so many times but, if you aren't going under 3/16oz very often, I'd go with the Aldebaran 30/31 or, a Daiwa SV reel.
