How to use USB Flash Drive as RAM Windows 10.
Windows Readyboost Feature.
Windows ReadyBoost is a function that can speed up Windows 10 by storing files & data as cache on a USB Flash drive. Using this cache is useful on an older Laptop or PC that has a slow hard drive or general slow performance.
ReadyBoost works with USB drives & SD cards.

Reminder: Readyboost is only available in HDD. SSD is faster than HDD and SSD don't need optimization.

Good point. Although I really don't like these modern Laptops with no HDD drives anymore. Some only have 128GB SSD drives, that will fill up so quickly with a few installs and photos and videos.

If pc says pendrive can't be used the best way to do it is formatting pendrive in pc. If you have files in pendrive it will be deleted and try it again. Make sure you uncheck quick format. You're welcome 🙂

Probably yes. If you have a Computer with 8GB of RAM you will only ever have about 6GB of free memory with Windows 10 running. Same with iPhones, even a 64GB iPhone only really has about 50GB free after you've set it up.

Does this work with an external hard drive as well? I've plugged mine in, but it doesn't have the readyboost option. Also, is there a way to connect 2 computers together to share computing power? I don't expect there to be one, but you never know :3

It only works on USB sticks, you can of course use your hard drive for virtual memory but nothing is as fast as real RAM chips. Dunno about connecting two computers, probably can but that's outside of my intelligence!

Is there any way I can increase the amount of GB used for storage on my USB flash drive? I just bought a 32GB flash drive for this very purpose as my 11 year old HP computer is running slow. The limit of GB storage seems to be 4GB with the message 'may be less than actual free space due to file system limits'

I think that will be controlled by your Windows operating system not the USB stick, it will show whatever is assigned in your Windows to the files.

Yes if it recognises it. Obviously a USB stick RAM won't be as fast as the PC RAM but it can help

I have a laptop with 4gb of ram as stock which is fine I guess but I want to use this method so I can play games like elite dangerous a bit smoother I haven't tried this yet but I'm worried that it will tell me I can't use it is there a work around in case?

I doubt it would improve gaming, really that needs a decent graphics card and solid state memory. You could try it but I doubt it will improve it. Good luck.

I think you have to set it up each time you reboot. It's ok to 'shutdown' the computer, don't just turn it off at the switch or button.

Obviously, for people who believe in it, it doesn't work, the USB doesn't have the necessary capacity to serve as RAM, we barely manage to use ultra-fast SSDs for this purpose today, so a usb key, even in 3.1... And what about ejecting the usb key, it's simply impossible to remove RAM when using an operating system, otherwise it would simply crash the PC.

8GB is fairly decent. Maybe Windows isn't allowing anymore. Prob best to try virtual RAM using hard drive, in the Settings

It does give you extra RAM but doesn't really improve performance.

Yes I think it does. It won't significantly improve performance though as it's slow RAM but it may help.

No but it’s not worth using unless it’s empty really. It doesn’t really speed up your PC\Laptop that much

You don't, it's automatic within Windows if the option is available. If your PC is fast it may not activate Readyboost

HELP! I tried to save some important files to my flash drive while it was in ReadyBoost mode, I cut and paste them as usual and it took a few seconds which made me think nothing was any different, then when I went to go open them elsewhere but it was just the shortcut file icon only, empty, same as my soul when I realized :( :( :( PLEASE HELP, HOW CAN I RECOVER???

Not sure, did windows really allow the cut and paste if the paste didn’t work? Are the files definitely not on the USB stick? Check recycle bin with the usb stock plugged in. If not then looks like you’ve lost it. You. An get recovery software but that’s normally to recover files that have been deleted.

@@LurgsHowToGuides correct, windows acted as usual when went to cut/paste, but files are not on the stick, only the shortcut folder icons but there are empty. I always empty my recycling before shutting down, which I did on the laptop from which the files originated, but when tried to open stick on a different laptop, treachery was afoot! I went back to the first laptop and tried to put the stick in and fiddle with Recycling, but nothing was found there either...why would the folder icon and names be there but have zero contents? :(

Real Talker 101 I'm afraid it looks like you've lost the files then. How annoying, Windows really should not have moved them unless the move was successful. If you plug back in USB stick but untick readyboost they might be there, but I doubt it. Sorry to hear that.
