Quick question: how does the commentary you have in the video match up with the overall commentary set? Thanks!

I believe what I show in the video is the part of the larger commentary sets. It's just one book that I show. They have repurposed those commentaries in several ways. I hope that helps.

I realize this is an old post, but I just came across it. How long do you recommend a Bible study be including the fellowship time? Is it ok to pick and choose which books to study or do you reccomend going straight through from Genesis to Revelation.

Those are great questions. I recommend starting with the following books and going in this order: Galatians, Ephesians, James, Ruth or Esther, John, Nehemiah, and Romans. In my experience those are great books to get a small group going on. Regarding how long a group should meet, I recommend 45min-1hr of Bible study time, 15min for prayer, and about 15min for fellowship. That works for most of our groups. Hope that helps! Please don't hesitate to ask more question if you have them. Blessings, Christopher S.

Exodus 21.21. God is okay with beating to death one's servant since the servant is his property? How do you interpret this?
@ChristopherLScott

Good question. Having slaves at that time was part of the culture. It seems so odd to us now, but back when it was common with everyone. (It is important to remember that Jesus didn't have any slaves.) In the New Testament (1400 years after Exodus was written) it is said that 60 million slaves lived in the Roman Empire. Since slaves were considered property of people, it was okay to punish the slave physically. But, the master could not kill the slave. If he killed the slave there would be severe punishment for the master. Be sure to read Exodus 20:20. It says that the master is punished if he beats his slave to death. There was punishment for a master for being overly cruel and killing his slave.

Considering the Bible deeply, but I'm still confused about how if it is God's Word, why are there so many major discrepancies? And why God seems to be so mean and prejudiced. Do you really think God of all would be in favor of some and hate others? Bless some, kill others? And condone slavery and woman being used as men please? Is this really God?

Rick, thanks for commenting. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. You have several questions in your comment, so I'll just address the first one for now. I have written a couple of blog posts about the Bible and why it is authoritative and accurate. These posts are written from the Christian perspective, but I hope they can be helpful for you. Here are the links, christopherscottblog.com/bibliology-inspiration-inerrancy/ and christopherscottblog.com/bibliology-bible-ultimate-authority/ I hope that these might help you understand the Christian perspective on the Bible and the "discrepancies" that some people believe it has. Thanks again and I look forward to talking with you more.

@@ChristopherLScott Thanks for the link. How do people use the Bible for moral instructions when there is so much horror in it that God seems to condone? Murder, rape, conquest, stealing land, etc.

@@ChristopherLScott It seems like a circular argument to say the Bible is authoritative because it was breathed by God. That's like saying it's true because it's true. "It’s message is coherent and consistent" and "thus says the Lord". How do we know? Some guy says "thus says the lord" and we take that at face value? And I still don't understand how one can say it is "consistent" when there are endless discrepancies, saying one thing once and the opposite later, etc. So far all I hear are circular arguments. Sorry, I probably sound like a heretic but I'm just trying to understand.

I guess my questions are too difficult. Too close to the bone. I think the thing most religious people are doing is blind faith for the purpose of consolation as opposed to truly being opened to the TRUTH, which is why the planet is in such bad shape.

Sorry for my slow reply, Rick. I have been preparing to preach this weekend and working hard on that message. I mentioned in my comment how my blog posts were from the "Christian perspective" so I think there are some elements of a "circular argument" to them. There is a good book I recommend for you called "Truth in a Culture of Doubt" by Darrel Bock and another author. It would be a good read. Perhaps you'd like to read it and share some thoughts? Regarding your question on "discrepancies," what specific discrepancies have you found in the Bible?

God chose Israel and helped them conquer the Canaanites and make them servants? Very convenient for the Israelite's. Let me guess who wrote that! I bet it wasn't the Canaanites. This is the kind of justification I find intolerable in the Bible.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. And I have another question: I've read in a couple of places that says the promise of a redeemer (Christ) is indicated in Gen 3-15. I don't get it. It sounds like it's about the snake vs. women. Where does a redeemer come into that? Thanks!

Regarding your question on Genesis 3:15. Not all Bible scholars see this is as a prediction of Jesus Christ. But most do. The seed of Satan are those people that he empowers to do evil and cause harm. The seed of the woman is the family of Abraham, which becomes the nation of Israel, which becomes the tribe of Judah, which is the line of David. See Matthew 1:2-16. Also, read Galatians 3:7-9, 14, 16. I hope that helps!

@@ChristopherLScott I thought God was forgiving though. Just because the Canaanites may have been bad in some ways, it's okay to destroy them and take their land? And they can't ALL be bad. See Gen 18.16-33 about Sodom. If there are any righteous people, He would not destroy them. I can't help but wondering if whoever wrote this part of the Bible did so as justification for taking the Canaanites land, etc.
