A Technician explains How to Use Wiring Diagrams for Car Electrical Diagnosis and Repair.
In this video we continue the electrical series by talking about wiring diagrams and how to effectively use them to diagnose cars. In the next part of the series we'll get a bit hands on when we explain how to use a multimeter to perform all the various testing that we've talked about in this series

As a Retired Auto Tech & Community College Instructor (57 years experience with ASE Master & L1) I love your descriptions & testing logic, exactly as I taught my students to do. It might be a good idea to compare diagrams for various manufacturers so people can see the minor differences. Keep up the great work! Many people do not know how to properly use electrical test equipment, especially for parasitic drain and loading circuits for voltage drop testing. It would be good to do a series based on these points. Again, keep up the great videos you provide. I have watched many of your videos and love what I see. Greg Warren

Why are components given ground in a car? In a house like a light switch it's given power so it's not constantly hot. So car components are constantly hot? Am I mistaken?
@gregwarren8583
@gregwarren8583 Жыл бұрын
@@abes7181 Abe, We use DC except internally in a Generator (usually called an alternator) tis device produced 3 phase AC which then goes through a rectifier to produce a pulsed DC output to the battery. Automotive circuits are usually Hot or Ground side switched. Ground is used as a return path for todays' Negative Ground systems. A switch may be constantly powered from the battery (ground side switcing), or switched power to a component (hot side switching). Let me know if you have any other questions.

@@abes7181Abe the use of the term "ground" in automotive electronics is a bit misleading. As you are likely aware that rubber tires are good insulators so nothing is actually going to the ground. As a circuit must be complete for current to flow, the metal frame of the car is the ground but most importantly is the metal frame is directly wired to the negative post on the battery completing the circuit. So when you hear "ground" just think negative to the battery.

I'm sure it will come later in the series but it would be great to actually see you use your tools to check these voltages at the various points in the starter diagram example. I'm sure you could rig up some test cases with bad wires or fuses or relays that you've collected over time and show the diagnostic thought process. Great so far!!!

Also, I am being greedy here but I think because of the success of your channel you could actually procure a "shop" car (maybe Corolla or Camry?)for these electronic lessons (and other repairs as well) and keep it in your facilities. You could demonstrate the diagnosis and repair process on the car and after some point in time you could sell it! You might be able to sell a high quality completed series of diagnostic assessment and repairs for certain Toyota cars or perhaps something more generic! Thanks again!

You're by far the best teacher for automotive electrical! I have struggled for years understanding wiring diagrams and firing the parts cannon at my cars. I replaced an entire ABS computer and pump when I tested the relay and though it was good. Come to find out, it wasn't; only because I tried every other part. It was one simple plug and play part that I somehow tested incorrectly, resulting in spending lots of time and money installing other parts. Thank you for all these videos and all you give back to us in the car community.

Also great is the logic of what to check first, second and so on to avoid chasing your tail. THANK YOU!!, "TCCN", FOR GOING THRU SOME OF THESE VERY HELPFUL INSIGHTS, AS TO HOW TO INTERPRET SOME OF THOSE "TINY" DETAILS, ON TYPICAL AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL DRAWINGS! I AM NOT/(WASN'T) WELL UP TO SPEED, ON MANY OF THOSE "SPECIAL" CODES, ABBREVIATIONS, STANDARD NOTATIONS", ETC. YOU HELPED, A LOT, IN BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND SOME OF THESE COMPLEX NOTATIONS, AND, I THINK THAT I'LL HAVE BETTER SUCCESS, WHEN I NEED TO FIND THE "TROUBLE", AND, POSSIBLE WAYS AROUND IT! IMHO: THE MOST DIFFICULT, AND AGGRAVATING STEP, WAS TO JUST FIND THE NEEDED SCHEMATICS/WIRING DIAGRAMS!!!! I HAD TO SPECIAL ORDER A BOOK, WITH OVER 300 PAGES OF INFO, ON THE PARTICULAR CAR MODEL,(2008 SCION XD)... IT WASN'T EASY TO LOCATE THAT!!! AND, THIS BOOK, COULD'VE BEEN MADE MUCH EASIER TO INTERPRET!... I ONLY HOPE THAT THE ENGINEERS WHO DESIGN THESE COMPLEX SYSTEMS, MAY ALL, SOMEDAY, HAVE TO GO THRU THIS PROCESS, THEMSELVES!!! ...MAY GOD BLESS EVERY ONE OF THEM!!! 💥

You got me in trouble today. I booked my UK spec 2022 RAV4 into a Toyota main dealer. I asked for genuine Toyota 0W-16 engine oil to be used. I was told we only use 0W-20. The service receptionist now thinks I'm either a nutcase or have OCD. Imagine me telling a UK Toyota main dealer to watch your channel. I struggle to see how Toyota UK can accept this issue. I'm only trying to follow the user manual recommendation. This is my first Toyota and from today's experience I might have to reconsider going back to Broke-My-Wallet. Sorry this is off-topic.
