The pop-up is a critical moment in surfing, one that will often determine if you’ll be making the drop, ‎or not.‎
A reasonable pop-up will probably do the job in forgiving conditions, that is - in small A-frame waves, ‎but the real test of your pop-up is in heavy waves or tricky drops.‎
So you’re probably already familiar with the common tips, but there’s this one element that is rarely ‎mentioned, and based on our experience - it actually solves a great deal of pop-up issues.

Oh my gosh, I can’t overexaggerate with a difference just a slight twisting of the hips, putting out the right knee as made on my pop-up speed. I was always off-balance. My first popped up and now totally balanced as the wave starts. Excellent excellent advice on this video.

My girlfriend, then wife, a maniac surfer-girl taught, me to surf and was the first to tell me the pop-up was key, yet she never explained this method which, I recognize is done with such ease and quickness, its an innate and unconscious process in those that pick it up "from 'birth" as she did!! I was late to the scene and never got the chance to develop this skill, even though a windsurfer, sailor, scuba diver!! Now you make me want to get out there again and have another go at it!! Few recognize how demanding a sport it is!! Thanks 4 the gr8 analysis!!

I don't think I have seen an instruction video mention the positioning of the hips before. This was useful and opens the mind to adopting a different approach to getting up on a surfboard. Personally I think they should delete the term "Pop-Up" because it is a distracting phrase that encourages a rapid, often uncontrolled rise up to a standing position on a board. This is particularly for newbies trying to develop the correct muscle memory.

It's not all "about your core and timing and keeping your eyes looking in the direction you want to go." Learning proper pop-up techniques is a highly important factor. Having super core strength and excellent timing won't likely guarantee you'll get to your feet if your pop-up technique isn't correct.

Unless I missed it, what isn't pointed out is that the right foot initiates the pop-up (goofy would be the left foot) by pushing off the surfboard thus opening space for the left leg to pass forward toward the nose of the board which results from rotating the hips.

Thank you - I'm 61 and have been surfing since I was 13. Ten years ago I crushed my right (back) leg ski racing and with limited range of motion I have struggled ever since to bring that leg forward under me the way I learned. The leg hack at 2:39 has helped enormously. So grateful!

It is interesting that even in the video you can see that the knee drags in the water when you do that. And I’d bet that her hips are much more flexible than mine (and yours?). That means that for us that knee would be dragging in the water even more. I know I can’t lie on my stomach and bring my knee forward while having it straight out to the side rather than downward (in the water). Hip mobility seems key for this method.

Finally a clear explanation of the mechanics. So obvious now. Struggled getting that front foot forward without doing a handstand to get my hips out of the way. This doesn't make it "easy", but at least it makes sense unlike other videos.

THANK YOU! This video is a major breakthrough for my pop up problems! Like others I've watched too many other videos that ignored this, and went so far as discouraging landing rear foot first followed by front foot. Landing rear foot first is the gateway to opening the hips for a proper side stance. Now I can do rear foot front foot quickly enough so the front foot only lands a fraction longer than the rear foot, and it has allowed me to easily pop up on larger waves.

Wow, amazing video, thanks! I've always struggled with popping up, I recently discovered it's mainly because I've always tried to pop straight up vs the more Auzzie pop up from the back foot, as I just don't have the hip flexibility to get my front foot where it needs to be without planting the back foot first (as I discovered when I started doing some yoga to try to improve flexibility) but watching this video I can see what I'm doing wrong now, I'm not rotating my hips at all, I land with my feet pointing forward, and always have a very sketchy start. I'm sure this will help! Thanks.

Yeah, I have to remind myself to do this every once in a while, especially if I haven't been out on the water. Problem is I'm old and a little heavy for the board I'm on, so it's struggle enough just to catch the wave, and I have bad knees and a bad back, so twisting like this gives me pause. But when it works, it's great, so it's good you focused in on this specific aspect of the popup.

I had an Aloha swallow tail board that I was too heavy for it. I used to oscillate my front foot on a 9-3 clockwise motion in order to properly pop up. I never saw anyone popping up like me but the drop knee body boarders. it worked well on that board. I started shaping boards for my body type. I noticed I have a pop up similar to this but my head is a bit lower. It works well for me. I also grab the rails in smaller boards and not grab the rails on bigger longer boards. I hardly miss a pop unless I'm beat down.
