The first ride - the first 10 seconds, where you fade right and hesitate on the pop up - reminds me of an old Dale Davis movie with Butch Linden on several waves at Radar Tower in Oxnard (he was also a goofy foot). Butch always did that too, followed by the sweeping turn from the tail with the wide stance. Of course he had a D-skeg and had to turn from the tail.

Wow, wow - great video! Your really nailed it. A ton of information - summarized perfectly. Had to go back and watch it 2 or 3 times. The degree of angle you recommend on fast closing waves at the peak is extremely important. I have been playing with this and I have not taken it to level you indicate but will try. I see it gives you better vision on the wave so you can time your entry. And as you say, keeping that inside rail edge down into the wave is key. If you are not pressing in on a steep wave it will role you , ha ha been there. Bottom line -if your Longboard is aiming straight at the beach and you are going for a steep wave, you are probably going to nose it; because you need the angle to reach escape velocity and launch you along the side wave before it closes on you! I can go on and on about the info you provided but I will end with saying - I think I am going to experiment with the fade turn when I am caught too far out on the shoulder of the wave. It seems to me heading toward the power section of the wave and then cutting back to get in line with the break direction is a possible option for catching a wave on the shoulder where it has less power. Cheer from down under - keep those great videos coming :-).
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 жыл бұрын
Well said Jack! Yes, going straight on a steep, late wave will send you for a nose dive. Even if you don't nose dive, you won't make it ahead of the section anyway. This is one of those takeoffs that's quite eye opening when someone finally executes it properly. It gives you freedom to know you can make waves that you never thought you could make! Yes you gotta try the faded takeoff. It's very weird at first and takes a little practice to learn to do them with speed. Also, just like anything in surfing, it feels way different than it looks. Watch ben considine do them for a better example. He gets some much speed on his. His feet are so close together and he really holds off the pop up till he feels he's positioned perfectly

Love this. I learned the angled take off from a pro longboarder who was also giving one to one tuition. It's really worked and I also learned not to grip the rail's but keep palms flat under your shoulders. My pop up has never been swift and I always wait a second or 2 when in trim to pop up fully then remain low till engaged with the wave face down the line. Patients is key, not rushing. This video has taught me some new ideas tho and I need to practice getting into the pocket and staying there as I want to get proficient on the nose. Great video,s, well explained and very helpful.

I'm not a beginner - but one of my recent discoveries is that a "lazer focus" on the NOSE of the board IS a great help in making late takeoffs on less predictable beach breaks.

Thanks for the vid, I noticed that when you are practicing the pop up, it looks like your back foot is pointed more forward and you are landing on your toes, I assume that is to keep you more agile than landing more flat footed? is this something I should practice also? 🙏🙏🤙
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Жыл бұрын
This is a tough one to answer. I suppose ideally you would pop up with your back foot perpendicular to the rails. BUT on a longboard you have more leeway. Sometimes my back foot will be on the toes, sometimes it won't. The later takeoffs I tend to be more on my toes

Wonderful content! In Florida we have jam packed lineups sometimes as many as 20 people on one peak. Longboards can catch waves further out but then you have to contend with the short boards. Any advice?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 жыл бұрын
thanks !! well, not only can longboards catch the waves farther out, but we can also catch the smaller waves on the inside. Everytime im in a crowded lineup im always going for the smaller waves. I did this in Santa Cruz with 40 people in the lineup and still caught as many waves as I do when I’m surfing NJ

Can you talk about foamy long boards and what the difference are to keep in mind when surfing as opposed to surfing traditional long boards, and good technique s for catching waves on the outside with a foamy vs traditional long boards?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 жыл бұрын
Well I don't own one so I'm not too sure of the subtle differences. One thing I know is foamy's don't glide as well while paddling or surfing which makes things different. Turning is also a bit different because they're normally tri fins. Basically a foam board acts "clunky" compared to a fiber glass board... but it hurts less to get hit by it haha!

Just picked up a 9 4 log, coming from an 8ft foam i was riding pretty neat. Now on the log I either pearl super easy or feel too be sat too far back and the wave rides right under me. I'm 6ft 3 but felt the 9 4 should be plenty be enough. Feels the like the margin of being too far forward or back is smaller than the 8ft foam.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Жыл бұрын
It is a smaller margin for sure. Also, the length makes nosediving easy if you are angling to straight towards the beach. 9'4" could be big enough, but I would have recomended a 9'8" or larger given your height. Just keep at it trying to find the sweet spot. Make sure you're angling your takeoff and also catching the wave far before it breaks. Since you can get a good glide going on a longboard, establish yourself early before the wave breaks and get up. Hope that helps!

@@LongboardSessions thanks for getting back to me. I've been trying to study your position from all your videos, which is helping. I will work on the takeoff angle tomorrow when I go back out. Sick video! You definitely should hit me up when you’re down in San Diego or Orange County! I got an INSANE board for you to try out. 7’0 square nose w/bat tail. Paddles like a log and can even get to the nose. Would love for you to try it out man!

Hey I have a question. You mention a "front side wave" and "back side wave" can you tell me what you mean? The take off is critical as its sets you up for the wave so another great vid you deserve a pay rise!!!!!!😊👍
@ianferrari7
@ianferrari7 2 жыл бұрын
Front side waves are when you're facing the wave, backsides are when your back is to the wave. If you ride regular rights are your frontside, backs are lefts. Opposite if you're goofy like he is.

Oh gosh I have no idea lol. I'll have to check that out. All I know is that my board is a tiny bit too big for me... but I planned that on purpose. I'm kinda treating it like a board to learn on and in the future will get a board a couple inches shorter and slightly less volume. But I love this thing

@@LongboardSessions Hi Brian, sorry i never meant to be disrespectful, as i said i loved your video , really did enjoy and intend to watch more. you said it in a way that was so easy to understand. i was only going to say that i always found it easier to nose ride the backhand and i used to find the best and longest nose rides came from drawing out the turn a bit longer and starting the walk from the time the board started climbing. You are almost at the top of the wave by the time you get to the tip and are going much faster, enabling you to make more critical sections. once again i meant nothing bad and wish you all the best , cheers ps i don't have Instagram

Oh no no , I was saying that your situation was brutal.. not your comment haha! Yes same here, the backside waves for me are so much easier for some reason! Your right on the money as well when you say to "draw out" the turn a little longer. That's actually a common problem of mine, setting up way too fast.

Well theres two ways to approach it. The "just go surf" way and the "having a goal each session" way. I did the just go surf method most of my life, but really started to improve when I started focusing on specific things. I think both ways are good, but some poeple are wired differently

Dude, first i want to say i love your videos. But honestly? I don't think theres really much usefulness in talking about all these details. These seem to be the kind of stuff that only make sense to be theorized you when you already know how to do it. Most of surfing happens so fast that you can''t really think about most things you do while on the wave(all automatic, just like you said on a former video), so i think the majority of it has to be learned on practice. My final point is that i think that any 'tutorial' or 'advice' that goes beyong vague advice will not be useful even if it is right. Good advice is a right advice that can be applied to the situation ;) Greetings from a 1 year longboarder ;)
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 жыл бұрын
Ah quite a bit to unpack. Well, I thought the same as you awhile back. However, I started to really improve when I did focus on individual things while out in the water. For example, I didn't know how to cross step so I focused on a specific technique and started to learn faster. If you don't know how to do something and you just go out and try to do it over and over, you will eventually get it, but you'll get it faster if you use the "focused" practice. This is all my opinion though, other people do disagree with this. It's worked for me thus far tho! A second note, If I didn't dive deep into these ideas, I'd have nothing to make a video about lol. Let me know if this clears up my approach.
