In this video I walk you through how to wrap the roof of a 2017 Subaru Outback without removing the rails or sharkfin antenna. The vinyl used in this project was ‪@VViViDVINYLS‬ Ultra Gloss Khaki Green.

Hey man! Great videos. Been wanting to do this for a while on my truck… Couple questions if you don’t mind. Overall how is the quality of the wrap when it comes to durability and protection against scratches/weather/etc? Do you prefer the VVIVID or INOZETEK? Company that wrapped our range rover used Inozetek which looked great but another shop that quoted me said to avoid both because they’re “poor quality” He recommended 3m/avery/kpmf but don’t like the colors they offer. He said he can get same color in KPMF but i never seen them offer it . Bottom line I want it to look glossy and hold up for 3~ years or so. Little things here and there aren’t a bother but worried about it losing color/ overall strength to handle each day

Thanks and thanks for watching! So for your first question concerning wrap in terms of durability and protection... If installed correctly, it's pretty durable in a general sense. Regular automotive vinyl (not PPF) won't stop anything that would dent, ding, deep scratch or gouge paint, but it generally provides a nominal layer of protection against mild scratches, rubs, weather and the like. However, it is just a thin vinyl skin, so keep that in mind to manage expectations concerning protection. As far as my vinyl preferences, between Vvivid an Inozetek, I personally would go with Vvivid as I am very familiar with their products and have used their products for quite a while and have had no issues. I've not had a chance to use Inozetek in person, but I have seen it in person (we have a roll in the shop). It looks really nice, but I can't speak to how it installs or it's longevity after install. However, with Inozetek, I'm always suspect about a company that will only sell you a full roll of film (no partials, unless they've recently changed their policy) and offers one of the shortest warranties (if not the shortest) in the industry. For the other shop's opinion on brand, I generally agree. 3M and Avery are always a safe bet as (at least in the US) they are basically the industry standard. I've worked with KPMF on several occasions now and I've been very impressed with it so far...easy to install with beautiful finishes. As far as KPMF color availability...it can be hit or miss. But, the same can be said for all vinyl, even 3M and Avery, as the whole pandemic-logistics-supply chain issue hit the vinyl wrap industry pretty hard as well. So, many colors except for the most common can be difficult to get. For your bottom line, 3M and Avery are definitely a good, generally safe way to go, and based on my experience, so is KPMF. However, like everything, the answer to how long a vinyl will last looking good is, "It depends." You may or may not get 3~ years with any brand of vinyl depending on where you are. For example, if you live in a place like Arizona, expect your vinyl (especially on horizontal surfaces) to get destroyed by sun within the year (if it's an outside all day vehicle)-- no matter what brand you choose. Other more temperate areas will allow your vinyl to look good longer. Be sure to scope out the manufacturer's warranty conditions (on their websites) to see what they will or will not back up with regards to their product. Sorry for the very long answer; I wanted to ensure I answered all your questions thoroughly and subjectively. Cheers, and thanks again for watching!

@@ColorChangeCustoms Thank you so much for this response! This really helps out a lot! I think I’m going to tackle this myself and really take my time on it and it will definitely be a learning experience. watching your videos really gave me the confidence to give it a shot and be able to trial and error the install. From what I’m seeing about Vvivid and inozetek is that it just takes a little more patience to install vs it actually being “bad” film. I think these industries now they just want to be efficient which definitely makes sense because being efficient saves time and money. But I don’t mind spending a little bit longer on something that is ultimately going to achieve the resort I’m looking for. Thank you very much again and look forward to watching more of your videos!

Thanks again and I'm glad my videos have been helpful. Yes, some vinyls like VVivid do require a bit more patience to work with. If you have enough spare vinyl, I might recommend a couple of practice runs first so you can see what will happen with the vinyl you're working with in particular (each brand has their own "quirks"), and to help develop a plan of how to wrap whatever it is you're tackling when you go for it. I do this all the time at work when we have a new vehicle we've not tackled yet, and/or if we get a vinyl that we've not encountered. Best of luck, and thank you again for watching!!

How did you split the backing without hurting the vinyl?
@ColorChangeCustoms

I used a tool called a Bodyguard or Backslitter knife, which allows you to cut between the vinyl and it's backing without cutting the vinyl. Here's an affiliate link to one like I use: amzn.to/3PRsr38

What if you want to wrap the shark fin? 1. Do you do both with one big wrap and cut the fin and tuck it in? 2. Do yoi tuck in the fin first or the hood first?
@ColorChangeCustoms
@ColorChangeCustoms 10 ай бұрын
You would wrap the shark fin separately. I usually wrap the antenna after finishing the roof

Great video! Actualy the only video on YT regarding wrapping between roofrails. I have a big problem with it and i have already wasted 5 meters on vynil. I just cant get the fingers away when i aproach the roof rail coming from the middle of the roof. Would you have a tip for me? I watched your video 10 ties but i still dont get it. Every time i try to get the fingers away i will create a thousand other small fingers😢. Its frustraiting to the point i would like to remove the roof racks but for my car i need to make it from inside, basicly i must remove half of my car interior for this. Please share a bit of wisdom with me 😅. Thanks ahead

Thanks and thanks for watching. Without seeing how the rails are setup on your roof, here are some tips that may help: - Cut the vinyl somewhat to shape, meaning, cut away excess vinyl that would possibly get caught on the rails when you are trying to install. If you notice in my video, where the roof rails are, the vinyl is cut out a bit - Put painters or masking tape on the surface of the rails, so that it lowers the surface energy of the railing surface and the vinyl doesn't stick to it so much. - Try to glass out the vinyl as best you can. Wrinkles are often a presentation of excess material in the area you are trying to apply. By glassing out the vinyl first, it helps pull out the slack (i.e. excess material) in the vinyl to make application easier. - Depending on your situation, heat may be helpful. Heating the vinyl will shrink the vinyl, which in essence reduces excess material/slack in the vinyl. This is a slow process though, where you heat the vinyl (big, broad areas) and let it fully cool back to ambient temperature. You then heat it again to further shrink the vinyl, and again let it cool fully. You can only do this a couple of times as the vinyl will only shrink so much. I'm not sure if these will help, but maybe they will to some degree. You can do it...Keep trying and don't give up!!

@ColorChangeCustoms Thank you very much for your fast reply. Yes I think that my biggest problem here is that I can't really glass it out. The rails are really tall and I can only pull back so much. If I could pull the vinyl in an smaller angle would be way better . I saw in the video, when you get Clos to the rails, you keep the vinyl edge lifted and you squeegee toward you. How com do you get no wrinkles? :). I can't get past this thing. I would have a tone of them. Maybe I need to work on my heat gun game. I use Avery satin metallic. I would also send you a photo of my roof but I can't here. May I contact you on insta? Thanks again for your reply and your time

I wanna see the small pieces in the rail stands wrapped. Like a Subaru sport

That would look cool! I tried on my rails, but the rail supports are all textured matte metal or plastic, and the vinyl doesn't stick to it. :-(

How much does it cost to do something like that?
@ColorChangeCustoms
@ColorChangeCustoms 7 ай бұрын
If you're doing this yourself, basically the cost of the vinyl, which could vary depending on the brand, color, type of vinyl (carbon fiber vinyl, colorshift, vinyl and chrome vinyls are more expensive) and how much vinyl you need (a roof on a small car is smaller than an SUV). If you go to a shop, probably $300-$800 would be my guess.
