Starting to learn how to walk a boat? This is the easiest way to get an idea of how things work. This is the easiest way to perform this manuever but not always possible depending on the wind

Sir, I thought your video was going to show the audience how to "side-walk" constantly the boat by using -1. Full starboard rudder for a starboard docked twin screw vessel. 2.- then using starboard engine ahead, and port engine astern , you can get the boat moving parallel to the dock in one simple MANOUVRE , but only if the vessels pivot point is well aft of the midships of the vessel.

That’s low tech but very effective presentation. And you’re right. Better to use the cut out to go through your thinking on it rather than try and demonstrate it.

Thank you I have a very in depth video of how to walk a boat sideways against dominant forces as well but that method doesn’t work with everyone’s boat

Keep rpm's the same (about 600 idle), starboard forward, port reverse, rudder to starboard, and the whole damn boat will move sideways. Easy peasy. Not that complicated guys. The whole back and forth stuff is why everyone's grinning on the dock...

Dirty Blond need a little more astern to Keep the forward creep Down though
@dirtyblond2332

@@BrandonActionJackson - Depending on your yacht, absolutely possible. My 44' power cat wont move an inch forward or backward with matching rpm's. (Screws almost 17' apart) Wind/current may necessitate more or less rudder to keep the bow from drifting off, but to be expected. If creeping forward or backward, increase the opposite rpm very slightly (maybe 50). The point is, whether coming on a dock, or off a dock, we only need to move the yacht 1.5-2 boat widths sideways. Even if there is a little creep, you're clear of the other boats in 5 seconds or so and can engage both forward or reverse to halt at that time. With twin screws, and a little practice, you should be able to write your signature in the water.

DB, I agree with your comment, This isn't the example of walking that I know and used in my boat handling skills. I kinda chuckled when I caught on to the plan. So many bath tub sailors out there. I was a captain for 34 years but learned the correct method of walking a boat 47 years ago. Just to add to your method the prop in reverse will not have the same thrust as the prop in forward so a little more rpm is needed for the reversed prop. Then as the walk is progressing you will have to ease the helm to control the bow swing.

CaptRon53 this is about as close as you’ll generally get to walking a boat with outboard turning wheels for the recreational sailor. I’m a captain as well and true lateral walks are generally impossible without using some other resource on a twin screw with outboard turning props. Most larger displacement or semi displacement vessels have onboard turning wheels in order to make true lateral walks possible. My other video explains that a lot better ... or for the river boat captains it can be achieved with the help of flanking rudders. But any other walk of a twin screw outboard turning prop setup is generally not truly lateral

@@BrandonActionJackson Well for me it was not informative as I watched 40% of your video and you really said nothing yet. So maybe it got better later but 40% was all that I was willing to invest. I think maybe you could have picked the pace up just a tad. I'm not trying to be difficult my friend I just telling you how I felt. Take care and be safe.

tackless you as well however understanding the purpose of side force and wheel walk is the whole concept to grasp when walking a boat... not just learning where to maneuver your throttles and that’s why many people can’t actually pull off the maneuver

@@n40tom You had enough time to criticise a video you only watched 40% of but not enough time to watch the other 60%? I live on a launch with twin shafts and despite increasing hands-on experience and watching many videos, I learned from this. I'm sorry whatever you were hoping to learn wasn't in the first three minutes and twenty nine seconds but that's no reason to rubbish a video that gives us exactly what the title promised.

@@GeoffInfield I guess if I was a novice it might have been okay. So I think my problem was I already know how to handle twin screws. I think the problem I had with your video was it did not explain very plainly to someone without experience. Okay there

You lost me the beginning of the video when you were backing on your Stbd and coming ahead on your port… you illustrated with your boat cut out you would maneuver your stern out. But in reality you would be walking in towards the dock. easiest way, I was trained when running tugboats…Back in the direction you want your vessel to go! Like a flat tire, dragging you out or in.

You can see my video how to walk a boat sideways without a bow thruster which is a more advanced video for continuous movement. It’s not based on pivot point in most cases . It’s usually based on whether or not the vessel has inboard turning wheels

@@BrandonActionJackson cheers for the reply Brandon, but I heard one can still do what I had described in my post with OUTBOARD TURNING WHEELS (propellers)- due to the way the rudders are positioned AND also in conjunction with the way the props are engaged in either ahead or astern.
