If your pillows have yellowed since you bought them, it's probably time to give them a good washing! It is actually recommended that you wash your pillows at least twice a year. This process will restore your pillows to their former glory, plus it's good for your personal hygiene!

That's the lazy approach... what I do is put it on the shower floor, soak it with water really well, drop lots of machine wash detergent on it and then merengue dance on it for about 15 minutes. Flip it on it's other side, and repeat merengue dance on it. To rinse, just meringue dance on it while water falls on it.

Jillee, Thank you so much for doing your due diligence and sharing it with us. I was unsure but now I’m a believer!! Had to improvise with the dish detergent because I didn’t have any. I used: 1 cup borax 1 cup bleach 1cup powder detergent (homemade) 1/2 cup baking soda 1 dishwasher pod (finish brand) They came out beautiful!! Lastly, I used 2 wool dryer balls and used several drops of my favorite essential oils on each ball and dried pillows on low heat.

I didn't actually believe this could work, but thought it worth a try. First soaked pillows in boiling water - that alone got a lot of the brown out. Then put in front loader, added half the given amounts of laundry soap, borax and dishwasher detergent (dissolved in water), without any bleach. I figured I could bleach them afterwards if necessary. Put the machine on hottest cotton cycle, with extra rinse. Poured the concoction in the dispenser. Voila - beautifully white pillows. But without a tumble dryer, can't get them nicely fluffed up.

I have an old pair of tennis shoes (they've been washed) I put into tube socks and use to fluff my pillows. I am concerned though about using bleach. Pillow manufacturers say not to because it breaks down the filling and is deadly for down. I use an Oxygen cleaner & Borax along with a half cube of dishwasher soap when I wash mine. I wash them twice and rinse twice the second time around. Works beautifully! Also, do NOT use fabric softener or dryer sheets on your pillows. It leaves a residue which when your body sweats on your pillows is almost impossible to get out.

You shouldn't use bleach because it will damage foam and down, 1/2 cup Oxi Clean powder or Borax works great because it's safe and low sudsing. You can bleach pillow protectors though. Use an extra rinse and a high speed spin to remove soap and water, if you don't have those options on your washer then wrap the pillow in a clean towel and squeeze any remaining water out before throwing them in the dryer.

Bleach will rot fibers so it might get things "white" (the stain is still there, just the colour of it has been bleached out) but in time holes will appear in the fabric, so Miltons sterilising fluid does the same thing with rotting the fibers.
@LinKatHen
@LinKatHen 5 жыл бұрын
Milton sterilising fluid is Sodium Hypochlorite 1% + Sodium Chloride (salt) 16.5%; Bleach is Sodium Hypochlorite 3.5% - in other words just a stronger solution.

This is why people used to use pillow covers under pillow cases. Then expensive pillows didn't have to be replaced! Nowadays you can wash pillows as most are not down. But it still makes sense to use pillow covers easier to wash and cheaper than pillows. JR

What do you do for the newer washers that say to add your "ingredients" in the ingredient drawer? My newer machine, has you load you laundry, shut the door, and it fills and adds the soap on its own. The door also locks. So how would I "fill a 1/3 of water, load my ingredients and let it agitate"? Ideas on how to apply this method with my kind of machine?

Dissolve the powder in a pot hot water, then once the washer has filled and starts its cycle, hit the "pause"/add garment button so it unlocks, and add the pot of detergents. Close it back up and hit "play"/start button. Just wait until the washer has already added the water it's going to, if I add water at the very beginning, my washer will sense it and drain it out 🙄.

I have a better way after years of trying to wash and dry pillows, especially if you have a front loader: 1. Take a knife or scissors and remove the pillow fabric shell, throw it away. 2. Keep the padding and buy a nice pillow protector with a zipper. 3. Put padding into pillow protector. 4. Take the padding out and wash the pillow protectors as needed.

I use this recipe for all my synthetic pillows and it works great, its just my down pillows float and wont stay in the water, so makes it kinda hard
@jessicah3450
@jessicah3450 3 жыл бұрын
I mentioned on your other post, because it happened to a down pillow of mine, pause the cycle and push it down in the water so it has time to soak up the water instead of floating. It may take a few minutes. Only use the delicate or gentle cycle. The high thread count to keep the feathers in also makes the pillow not as absorbent. They also take longer to dry (and you want them really dry or they'll smell like a wet dirty duck), so do invest in some zipping pillow covers so that you don't have to wash the down pillows as often. You can just freshen them in between washes by putting them in the dryer on high heat for 10 minutes with a couple of tennis balls and a dryer sheet. That makes them smell nice, and the heat will kill dust mites if allergies are a problem for you.

I don't think all that powder will dissolve in a low water washer, maybe dissolve it in a pot of hot water, then add it to the washer once the cycle has started. I have a top loading one, but it is also HE, and that's how I trick it. It doesn't dissolve powdered detergents well at all.
@monkeyorchid4081

this would be a really good process but most European washing machines are front loaders and you cant really stop and start between turning it on and washing? So i am wondering if you could mix the whole kit into a bowl of hot water and then add it to the front loader and then stick those horrible pillows in..wonder if that would work?

I have an HE washer, and I dissolve the powders in hot water, then pour it into the detergent cup as the washer's filling. It normally only wants liquid detergent, but I can trick it. I don't know if it works on all washers, but the computer on mine can't tell, and I can get to the detergent cup while it's filling, I know some don't like that. I guess you could also pour the dissolved detergent water onto the pillows before you start the cycle? But also some of those will sense water in there and drain before it starts the cycle. Not always a fan of the robotic washers deciding what I can and can't do with my laundry 😂😂

@jessicah3450
@jessicah3450 3 жыл бұрын
You have to pause the washer and press them down into the water, so that gives them time to soak up the water, then they won't float to the top. Also only use the gentle or delicate cycle, so the covers don't tear. They also take about 2 hours to dry, but you want them really dry or they'll smell like dirty ducks. So I got nice pillow covers for mine in addition to my pillowcases and keep those really clean, so I only have to wash the pillows every 6 months or so. You can freshen and fluff down pillows in between washing by putting them in the dryer on high for 10 minutes with a dryer sheet and a couple of tennis balls. The heat kills dust mites, and the tennis balls really fluff them and make them feel like new!

You can use Restoration for Delicates and Vintage Linens along with good bleach, like the lemon-scented Clorox bleach. You can use the Nellie washing detergent, too. You know, the water over there, I've found out, is not properly treated. That's the kind of strategy being used over there to destroy people. You need the atmospheric water generator (air to water maker) that can generate liquid water from the humidity in the air. Hiding this for so long is the other strategy. This will get your laundry cleaner. You also need the Dyson humidifiers and air multipliers, UV disinfection robots, and medical grade air purifiers to have good air, and not go outside so much. Bad air is the other strategy.

@jessicah3450
@jessicah3450 3 жыл бұрын
Borax is the brand name for sodium borate, it's a laundry booster, it's also in dishwasher powder. You can also try washing soda, in the US, Arm and Hammer makes it, but it's also called sodium carbonate or soda ash. Most powdered detergents already have these ingredients in them, but you can add extra to boost the whitening and soften the water, so your detergent works better. The dishwasher powder she puts in there usually has washing soda in it too, most commercial ones do. Actually a cheap homemade dishwasher powder is mixing borax with washing soda. They both work by making detergents and soaps able to do their job of breaking up dirt and grease and suspending it in water to be washed away better.

Ruined one of my pillows (not sure why only one because I washed 2) - did NOT get the stains out and there is no way it wasn't bad for the machines - the pillows were extremely heavy when wet. Don't waste your time, pillows or washing machine health..

Laundromats have big washers if yours isn't. Worth a few quarters to have clean pillows, they only need to be washed every 4-6 months if you keep your pillowcases clean.

My husband has been around washers. ..esp HE Washers..if you use anything but HE Detergent. You Will eventually run into problems. Homemade detergents that use Fels Naptha, Zote ect..isnt good to use in HE washers, in a Traditional washer its ok. Traditional and HE washers drain Different. Some of these people need to start doing researching. Ask your Manufacturer or the Appliances Specialist before doing these things. I DON'T always go by what these people say on youtube. Tbe only thing I make of my own, is homemade Liquid Dish Detergent. I. Going to Stick to using HE Detergents regardless how much I got to pay.

why bother with all the hot water and special detergents , washing pillows is real easy in an ordinary bucket with warm water and plain soap , add ordinary bleach as directed on bottle to whiten them if required , and air dry in the sun on a hot day , not in winter , very very easy , you could use your laundry tub , but can not understand why you need a washing machine or all the special detergents
@ashleygates9987

Most people own washing machines and it requires less work and people may have other house chores to get done. I live in the US so that's just how most people do things here. I bet there are very few people living here that use a tub to do laundry (my grandma is one of them).
