I think it's nice to clean the washer, but likely of little value. That's because when you clean in there you only get to clean what you can see. That drum with the holes has a backside to it which is exposed to the dirty water too and so likely just as scummy, bet you can't reach it. Then there is the larger solid walled drum the holey drum is inside. That's gotta be filthy too and you can't get at it either. So he gets less than a third of the scummy surfaces in there which his wash water is exposed to. Granted he gets what can directly touch things in a fresh load, but his water is still contaminated by the rest of the scummy surfaces unseen.

Do you know what I enjoy most about your videos? You don't relentlessly press people to buy a product. I previously sold new vehicles and I still find myself feeling uncomfortably pressured to buy products with other detailing KZfaqrs. You may mention your product, but it never takes precedence over actually teaching people something. I won't name names, but I just watched another "clean your towels" video from another company and cannot believe how much BS they feed their viewers and how their sales pitch overtakes their information. Thanks for keeping it real and informative.

Larry, great videos and information. I have been doing construction longer than you have been detailing, take my advice, change out your dryer vent pipe from plastic to a minimum flexible foil duct. Better yet make as much of it as you can hard pipe and then foil flexible. It is a gas dryer and you are looking for a fire to happen. The plastic duct work is probably hard and brittle the heat does the same to that flimsy plastic duct work as a microfiber towel.

You put little bootees on their feet. You can apply compound or polish to the bootees as appropriate to save a bit of manual effort and the bootees protect the paint from the scratches.

I'm a chemist who used to work on powder detergents, Tide specifically. You have a pair of problems no single detergent can tackle alone, dirt and oily or waxy residues. Your application requires 2 washes per load. If you are seeing powder detergent left over on fabrics, you're using too much powder. It takes much less powder than most people use, 1/3 to 1/2 scoop for a full sized load. Use less for smaller loads. Use even less if you have very soft water. Powder detergent has an advantage no liquid can match, sodium aluminum silicate or similar compound. After extensive testing, I recommend Tide. It really does clean better. One of its functions is to keep soil removed from fabrics in the water and not redeposited on the fabrics. This is important for loads like yours. What dirt you get out needs to stay out. Since your towels also have a high waxy oily content, two wash/rinse cycles would be better. Wash and rinse once in powder detergent, then a second time with liquid detergent. Oils will stay in the towels during the powder wash. The liquid wash will remove those organics. The second wash should also wash the washer so you don't have to run an empty load as often to clean it. It may not matter which order you wash in, but you need both on these towels. Use at least a warm wash and warm rinse. Hot wash and warm rinse would be ideal. Cold rinse will cause waxes and oils to deposit inside the washer and back on the towels leaving them with residue, and you'll have to clean the washer more often. This regimen may allow you to get more life out of your C towels before they turn into D towels. The D towel you showed could be cleaned well with this combination of wash cycles. If you try it, please leave a comment as to how it worked for you.

i detail at a used car dealership in ontario and we wash all our towels in the same washer and they all go in dryer together lol i love watching the ammo videos because it teaches me how to do it properly so if i have a nice car some day i can clean it properly! Just wanted to take a few minutes and thank you for this video. I have OCD about detailing my car and using the best cleaning supplies but one thing I never did was clean the micro fibers I would always buy new which can get pricey. This shines some light into sorting what towels are and if they need to be thrown out. I am so thankful someone else out there thought of this.

I have made many errors with smearing windows with towels that had some residue on them, this is a bit OCD like me, over the top but I love your meticulous style and tips. I accidentally burned an end or two of micro towels and the heat melted them into a hard crust ... so it didn't occur to me that a hot dryer is capable of doing the same thing, even at a microscopic level, will make scratches in the finish. Thanx for all the info on the weights, makes a LOT of sense and very useful info, as usual.

Unless you are detailing Lamborghini's or Bentley's, just wash your dang microfiber towels together in a separate load and be done with it. If you have some nasty ones, pre soak them, or repurpose them as shop towels. Air dry the towels separately and use your dryer's lower heating settings and don't use fabric softener sheets (as with any dryer cycle, clean the lint trap first). Store your towels separately in a bag or box to keep them free from dirt and dust.

For me anyways, rinsing in warm avoids that coagulating of gunk on the machine and gets more dirt and detergent out of the towels. (I've watched the washing and the rinsing process by holding down the "safety" switch to see how the water looks) "Cold" can be very cold in northern places (as ya know). In winter and spring the "warm" setting will be kinda too cool cuz of the freezing cold water added to the mix. In that case, I'll start the wash with the hot setting, then switch it (while it's filling) to warm wash when the tub is 1/3 full. Love your vids. Cheers from Ottawa, ON:)

Great video! Me and my wife own a cleaning business and essentially employ the same strategies for our towels. Love your videos, learned a lot about cleaning glass from you. The razor trick works great on hard water deposits in showers also on tile. It saves us countless hours on real estate jobs that want it done great and asap.

Totally feel you on that 😂 Especially if you don't want to argue with your family about who gets to use the washer and dryer first, or you don't want to worry about them washing and drying your precious microfibers with the wrong settings!

Very informative video. Thanks for posting it. In the area of safety please do yourself a very important favor, on your basement dryer get rid of the white plastic vent tubing as it is a fire hazard. If there is any lint that flares or flames an internal fire becomes an external fire in an instant as the tube melts in a flash. You are supposed to only use rigid solid ducting or flexible aluminum and not even the silver foil tubing as it's not much better than the white vinyl that you have. I'm a contractor and know of people who lost homes due to this issue.

A little off topic here - I noticed the plastic vent hose coming from your dryer. Those plastic hoses have been known to catch fire. They are banned here in Canada due to the large number of house fires they caused. I see the plastic vent goes up near the gas line and gas meter. That's scary. I hope you will consider switch to a metallic exhaust pipe from the dryer. I don't want to see you hurt or your home lost.

Hi Larry; this is a fascinating video. Thank you for doing such a find job of explaining M-F towels. Best tip was not to turn the dryer to "hot as hell" when you're drying them because of the damage it does - and yes, I have some that have a slightly crunchy feel to them - so now I know that they've been burned. I'm not that dedicated to my car washing so I basically go with 3 sets: washing / drying / waxing - and they go into the machine by their "set" when I have enough used ones.

Adding soap (liquid or powder) first is something I started doing a long time ago. I add it to wherever side the water pours into the drum and let it get washed down into the outer drum. Never ever have residue or discoloration problems doing it that way.

Me too! I add the soap to the empty washer, let it fill 1/3, THEN add the laundry. Soaps are so overly concentrated now, that I just don't feel confident they will dissolve well enough without extra help.

I hand wash my microfiber towels in the garage sink, using liquid laundry soap and warm to hot water. Rinsing them each time in cold water. Sometimes it takes up to three (3) good wash/rinse cycles to get "all" the crud out of them or until the water rinses clean. Then, air-dried in the shower stall. They usually come out looking like new again. I don't think machine washing does that thorough of a job, Ammo?

+Roy Robinson I've never had a problem with machine washing and I've been doing it for 20 years. I have soooo many towels if I hand washed them, it would take me 2 days. :)

+AMMO NYC, I certainly don't have the volume of M/F towels you most likely have. I use 6-8 towels per vehicle and with 3 vehicles, maybe, at most 20-24 towels a month? However, hand washing remains my preferred method, because I know when they rinse perfectly clean they are clean. Today is not my first day either, Sir. I also store them in Zip-Lock freezer bags. I did learn about the different varieties of M/F towels. Thanks for the response and another great video. ;-)

+Joseph Elmajian , I don't have 400 towels a week either, so it works for me Joseph :-) Some of the dirtiest one's get hand-washed/rinsed twice, or until the rinse-water is clear. I know mine are clean! Who knows what they come out like from a machine?

Thanks for the detailed video. Setting the washer on a double-rinse cycle also works good to remove soap residue, even with Tide granules.

Great video, very informative. I have only one comment. I see that you are using a plastic dryer duct to vent your dryer. These ducts are a fire hazard, they are flammable. (And they are not permitted by code. They are only allowed to vent a bath vent.) You can use metal flex up to 8' . After that you must use rigid metal duct to the exterior. Also remember to clean the lint build up (highly flammable) from your dryer duct every year. (There are many good videos on KZfaq showing how to do this.) Plastic dryer duct is the cause of many home fires every year!

FYI : Noticed the plastic/vinyl dryer vent hose. these are not a smart option because they do catch fire. aluminum vent hose recommended.

Fabric softener will prevent material from absorbing over time, so shouldn't be used in towels in general. I don't know how well white vinegar works with MF towels, but it can be good for removing the build up from fabric softener, and also limescale in hard water areas. It may also help remove other stuff from the towels. You use it like you would a fabric softener. And no, it actually doesn't leave a smell after.

mrman17 Always vinegar! It's one of these lifehacks our grand-grandmas used to do. Vinegar will wash out all the greasy soap paste left that can't be just flushed out with water, and honestly it can be used on normal clothes as well, instead of fabric softener pour some spirit vinegar. The best thing is, the vinegar will almost instantly evaporate after You take the clothes out of the washing machine, and there will be absolutely zero smell on them. Also if You're allergic to detergents, vinegar is Your friend.

I hope you read this, I'm about to post some good info for people to see. but I'll also email you it so you see it too, in case you don't read this. It's actually better if you use a "No heat dry", also known as "air dry" for the towels. The reason for this is that the water will naturally evaporate, and should you god forbid have any left over detergent, it wont bake in. because even low heat will cause that stuff to "bake in" like a ball of lint, then you ruin the towel because it pulls the weave out. I also liek to give my towels a quick shake before putting them in the tub, because there may be no lint balls, but lint can still be an issue, so you'll get any excess lint off that you normally cant see. And with your bag thing, It's decent, but I prefer to use a plastic bulk tub I keep clean and free of lint, certain bags (even if it's a plastic like material (I don't know their names off hand) the weave will catch the weave of the towel and make little micro pulls in the weave, kind of like pulling a random string from your shirt. Plus bags can keep lint inside them, yes you can wash the bag inside out, but I rather be safe then sorry. Couple other things, a detergent that is oxygen based (like oxyclean, liquid stuff ONLY) is less harsh on the fibers of the towels. They are also free of dyes and stuff like that. I use name brand oxyclean with my towels and they feel brand new no matter what i do to them it seems. I hope someone learns something here and I've helped someone. Have a good day!

I got to the point where I no longer use MF towels on my wheels. Originally any towel that I used for wheels would ONLY be used for wheels from the point forward. Simply because I never trusted all brake dust would be removed during cleaning and I didn't want that getting dragged all over my paint on the body. Those towels for the most part were used one time and thrown in the garbage. It became a waste of money. That's a different subject, but I just wanted to mention if you use a towel on your wheels you should try to avoid using that same towel on your paint later on.

Yes, designating certain towels for certain parts of the car is wise. I use shop towels or rags on my wheels after I've washed n scrubbed them with brushes. Works for me, but then again, I'm not detailing a Lamborghini (i probably would go with a brand new towel if I were detailing a Lamborghini).

A great way to clean a clothes washer is to just add 1 cup of powdered citric acid directly into the tub (Milliard typically has the best pricing) and run the washer on the hottest cycle. It cleans out the drum and water deposits. I do this monthly or whenever I wash heavily soiled items. (I stopped using white vinegar and now use citric acid to clean water kettles, coffee makers, dishwashers; it is the main ingredient for many commercial hard water cleaners.) Great video. I love all the details and the why of how you do things. Thanks!
